Boston, MA at the Roxy- Review
In a word....amazing...in another word...incredible....in 1 more word...WOW! These were the words from my wife during and after the show in Boston, MA this past Saturday night. Now she's always liked Jamiroquai's music but that was as far as it went....until she saw them live...she is now a convert. .
The sound was excellent, the place was sold out and it was about 350 people there. Jay was sporting a Black (with a white stripe)Adidas sweat suit with the Famous head gear....except this one was black as well with sparkled flakes on it. Rob Harris was incredible on lead guitar! I can't remember the exact playlist they performed but here's what I remember:
Little L
Use the Force
Love Foolosophy
Black Capricorn Day
High Times
Dynamite
Seven Days in Sunny June
Time Won't Wait
Light Years
There was three more that I can't remember
But the biggest surprise of the night was when they played Deeper Underground.
We were in the back of the club and while Rob Harris was ripping it up on the guitar...a marsh pit broke out. I couldn't believe it!! For those of you who don't know what a marsh pit is it's when a group of people start jumping up and down and slam into eachother...on purpose. Needless to say it wasn't a violent marsh pit....but it was one nonetheless.
Overall I was extremely happy with performance. I actually think he sounded better last Saturday night then he did 8 years prior (the last time he came to Boston) the room was completely filled with positive vibe and everyone whether they could dance or not was moving their body to the infectious groove.
Jay did bring up an article(from 8 years prior) that was published in the Boston Herald about how the critic said that Jay stole his way to the top by taking bits from other artists. The crowd naturally booed the review mentioned and everyone their made sure to let Jay know that 1 critic certainly did not reflect the views of the people of Boston.
I'd give the entire night a perfect 10.

Huh...I thought that was a Globe article, KMack. Oh well...I was booing like the rest of them.
Anyway, the concert was fantastic. I was in the fifth row in the dancefloor, singing along with people around me. I was surprised that a lot of folks knew most of the words to the new tracks. It was great to see the place sold out, there were people jamming the balconies. The floor was packed and we were loving it.
Jay was a crack-up with the fans. He ended up getting a joint and a bag of weed from fans, along with a Bud Light (at which point he highstepped across the stage with the beer in his hand)--the guy looked thrilled! He also told us of his discovery of the meaning of 'philosophy,' then started to imitate college philosophy students flipping through books: "This philosophy...this is bullshit, this is bullshit..." I took a Philosophy course last year, so for me, it was a riot. And, of course, he did the whole "I've never smoked a joint/I've never broken the speed limit/I always make my mom a cup of cocoa" bit.
I think my favorite track on the bill was Light Years...it was an old-school version from the second album, but Matt's keyboard work was awesome. Other great moments were Rob's solo on Space Cowboy, and Sola and Derrick's percussion "duel" on Revolution. It was a fantastic concert, the best one I've ever been to. Granted, I haven't been to many, but I can only assume that I'll only be able to see a big-name act in a small setting oh so many times. Maybe if Dynamite does well here, JMQ will come back to Boston soon. I'll be in line for sure. _________________ "...I feel that Jamiroquai needs to be taken to another stage now. It really does. Otherwise, I have to be honest, I can see a situation where...there is a possibility that you become lost in the annals of acid jazz history." -- Jason Kay |
