NEW Interview! (GHAC was the original name of the album!)
Hello Jamirotalkers,
Check out this nice new interview I found, is kind of interesting:
JAMIROQUAI
Cornelius Alutious Monkberry III speaks to Jay Kay
With canned-heat in his heels again, space-cowboy Jay Kay and his band of merry men returned to the spotlight earlier this year with the release of a new album, Dynamite – a traditional Jamiroquai goodtime album, spiced up with some new flavours and sounds. To further demonstrate that there’s still plenty of fuel to fire the Jamiroquai phenomenon, Jay Kay is returning to Australia, on a mission to deliver some dynamic and fun live performances. If you’ve ever experienced Jamiroquai live, you’ll know it’s a sweaty, goodtime, funky affair that brings to life the outfit’s joyous music, whilst at the same time heightening Jay Kay’s appeal as an entertaining and mesmerising performer.
Clearly looking healthier than he has over the last few years, and with a cheery disposition, Jay Kay is eager to point out that if people expected a certain sound from Jamiroquai, they’re likely to be surprised by Dynamite. Its first single, Feels Just Like It Should, may not have been the big single that he'd hoped for, but it certainly set the pace for the tunes on the new album.
“I just think that after four years away… I wanted to be dirty, if you know what I mean,” he says with a glint in his eyes. “Feels Just Like It Should was a rock/funk kind of sound, but at the same time it’s a return to the funky drumming style of our earlier records. It was something different, and at the end of the day I didn’t want people slating me for releasing a first single from the new project that they thought was like some of our earlier records. The track Give Hate A Chance was a possibility to become the first single, and so was Dynamite, and we were nearly there with selecting one of those, but I knew it was the wrong thing to do. You have to really feel these things, and I just felt that it was the wrong road to go down. It had to be Feels Just like It Should because I felt more comfortable with it as a concept; it was also a great song to make a killer video for. I’m happy with the decision to lead this project with that single.”
At times the Jamiroquai set-up can be confusing; I mean, what exactly is going on with the line-up these days? Is it just Jay Kay, or is it a band… is there a definitive answer, or isn’t there?!
“It is a band, but it isn’t… members do come and go, but I’m the common link, I guess. Some of these guys have been with me for ten years so of course they’re like a band. In a way it’s a band, and in a way it’s Jay Kay. I’m in the spotlight for the release of the album and things, but in a live capacity Jamiroquai is a band.”
Any clearer? No, neither am I… and I’m not sure Jay Kay is either, but if it works that way, so be it!
Talking about the title track, Jay Kay’s mind starts to wander, before returning to the explanation for deciding on the album’s title. “I had some ideas for that song at home, but a lot of that track was done in LA. We were thinking about calling the album Give Hate A Chance but that created a bit of a controversy and there was a bit of a kerfuffle about that, so we decided to go with Dynamite. We thought the title was short and snappy… and in way I do feel like I’m exploding back on the scene,” he says with a cheesy grin.
It’s hard not to like Jay Kay when he’s this playful, and it's this that works for him when he’s onstage – his roguish and irrefutable charm. Yet despite all his magnetism, it’s also important to note that Jay Kay has a deeper side and has always made a point to stand up for social issues that he believes in. On Give Hate A Chance, he seizes the opportunity to make a political statement about, and against, George Bush.
“Obviously it’s a reversal of the Give Peace A Chance slogan,” he explains. “Right now I just feel quite annoyed with humanity because all we seem to do is fight, kill and hate. So in an ironic way, it’s saying if you can’t give peace chance, well why don’t you go ahead and give hate a chance; that’s all people seem to be doing anyway. It’s quite an angry song in terms of those lyrics, even though the groove is quite funky. The song is a sign of these times – it can only get worse from here, especially with Mr. Bush,” he swipes.
In addressing this issue – and issues in the past regarding environmentalism – Jay Kay has established himself as a voice in the music industry who adds social responsibility to his list of achievements. Nevertheless, he's also very aware that it’s a fine line to balance as a celebrity musician. “The thing I have to keep in mind is that I’m a musician not a politician, and what I do is make songs. With certain songs there’s only so much you can say, in terms of fitting in the phonetics of a message, in a musical line. It’s obviously great to deal with deeper issues, but sometimes you can’t do that properly within the structure of a song. At times I like to make my viewpoints clear, and at other times I like to just kick up my heels and have fun. I believe I can do both, without necessarily losing any real credibility. We all have two sides to us.”
In addition to being renowned for dedication to social responsibility, Jay Kay is equally well known for his love of all things stylish – especially fashion and cars. But he’s quick to point out that it’s not exactly the fetish that the media portray him to have. “I think there’s a lot of aesthetic beauty in [cars] and they make a really great sound! At the end of the day, they are just things to collect. People are always asking how I can spend so much money on cars; well, it’s much the same as those that want to spend three times as much on a small drawing from Picasso. It’s a hobby.”
Back to the music, and it’s very apparent that Jay Kay is excited by the prospect of taking his music on the road. Despite all his success – 20 million albums sold, thank you very much – he’s almost like a debut artist brimming with enthusiasm, talking about reactions to the album over the last few months.
“I’ve got a new head on me over the last year and a half, and that really makes a difference. I’m sure you can work out what that’s all about,” he winks. “So anyway, it’s a different buzz that we really feed off now, and it’s just case of getting out there and playing the new tracks live to audiences.”
Ready to serve up some serious soul, and some phat-ass funk to Australian audiences, Jay Kay’s genuine enthusiasm for touring Australia is more than evident. He reminisces over prior trips; “I just love Australian audiences – and I’m not just saying that. Everyone’s so laidback and up for having a good time. I tell you what, I’m so ready to let loose and party on stage, they won’t even know what’s going to hit ‘em… but I’m sure they’ll love it. Bring it on, I say!”

thanks for the info, it's interesting.....
i don't like dynamite for album name....but give hate a chance is not so good neither.....if they wanted the name of a song for the album i choose:
feels just like it should or even starchild...or time won't wait..... even beatbox is better than DGHAC _________________

It's very simple.
It's all Jay Kay, but he's 'selling' the band story to us to look better, 'cause he knows we love them all! If he was to say that they're easily replacable, it wouldn't sound very nice, would it? |
