I heard England was in danger of not qualifying for the World Cup next summer. Did they end up making it?

Yes, they did, I'm almost shure.
And f*ck!!! Argentina lost 2-3 against England!
Arg. was winning 2-1 but in the last 4 minutes Owen scored 2 goals and they won 3-2  !!!!
Arg. play wery bad, the mannager should have leave the team a long time ago...
... and it seems like the players don't want to win!!! God!! they were playing very good but when Ar, was 2-1 they stopped playing football at all!!!
Anyway, England played a very good match, congratulations, you knew how to win the match, sincerly.
I'm a little angry, sorry I don't know if the rest of Argentinean people feels like me, I'm shure they do... |

Apparently England are the now second favourite with the bookies to win the World Cup next year!!
And yeah we did qualify so we'll be there... (We of course meaning the England team: I'm not involved in any of the process!!  ) |

Argentina was the first favourite for the Korea-Japan World Cup, and they lost, so please don't mention Argentina in the favourites (it's bad luck lol)

Yes we qualified, that's why we were playing a friendly yesterday instead of a qualifying playoff. And we weren't in danger of not qualifying, we just got a bad result from two really appalling performances.
Gonza, don't feel too bad, I think both teams can be happy with their performances (apart from the last 5 minutes for you lot), and in a friendly that's what's more important than the result, really. I thought a draw would have been a fair result, it was a great open match and it was that good that it was almost a case of 'both teams deserved to win' rather than 'neither team deserved to lose'. Taking Ayala off near the end did for you, if Heinze had been there you might have been alright without Roberto... but Walter Samuel?

Since we're discussing it, I struggle to think of ANY World Cup which was won by the team who, before the tournament, were considered favourites. It's certainly not happened in my memory / lifetime. I'm only 21, and the earliest WC I can remember with any clarity was '98 because England didn't qualify in '94, but let's count back and see...
2002 - France and Argentina joint favourites. Both crash out in the first round, France without scoring a goal (as defending CHAMPIONS! Hilarious!) and Argentina talking about how 'We played better in all three of our matches, we never deserved to go out' (Canniggia, I think it was who said that). Brazil won, after beating the only other effective challengers (England) in the quarter-finals.
1998 - Brazil overwhelming favourites. Battered everyone in sight until the biggest conspiracy theory in football history struck on the eve of the final. France won, in front of their own crowd.
1994 - Germany and Italy went into this one with high expectations, Germany as defending champs and Italy on the back of Serie A's huge glamour and success in the early '90s following their hosting of the 1990 tourno. Brazil won, with possibly the 'worst' (by the Brazilian definition of the word, which equates to least spectacular) team ever.
1990 - Argentina and Brazil were favourites, Germany won (less than a year after being reuinified!). Since I'm English and it's been mentioned on other forums, I'll also point out that our semi-final appearance at Italia '90 was our best performance since winning it in '66, and that some people are now setting it as the benchmark for the current side next year.
1986 - I must be honest, I don't know WERE favourites for this one. But I'm pretty sure it can't have been Argentina, with their 'we've only got one really decent player but he happens to be perhaps the greatest in the game's history, so let's give it to him and let him win it on his own' tactics. Maradona became the second player in history to win a World Cup single-handedly (no pun intended).
1982 - Again (see 1990), Argentina (defending champions) and Socrates' Brazil were the likliest winners. Italy won.
1978 - Home crowd, a government who, depending how suspicious you are, were intimidating the opposition (I don't happen to believe that but I know plenty of people do) and a very good team with Mario Kempes at the front and the genius that is Cesar Luis Menotti orchestrating from the bench. Perhaps the last time a World Cup was won by a team you could have set to music, and probably the last time the favourites (Argentina) won it.
So, if you agree with my thoughts, six tournaments and 28 years (by the time Germany 2006 kicks off) will have passed since a World Cup was last won by the team the critics expected to win it. Sure, Brazil look unstoppable now, but once the knockout rounds start it's anybody's trophy...

The thing is that we did play better the matches, but when you have to attack a team with 8 players defending in their own field, you can't score a goal! Argentina was the 2nd candidate to win the cup, so all the opposite teams played the matches only defending and when they have a little chance they counter-attack they score a goal.
Argentina attacked all the time but couldn't score... just that...
Anyway, the other teams played very good too. |

As long as you have to have that pathetic Pipo Inzaghi scoring in the 98th minute to win against Lecce at home, you'll get nowhere near Juventus.
