I disagree with the idea of Maroon 5's stealing...
they're a nice band and great musicians, they don't hav to steal anything....
By the way, try 'Sunday Morning', what an incredible song!

hey, i'm sorry but i'm gonna have to say something here..i understand how you feel cheeba, i sorta felt that when i first heard it, but the feeling passed quickly. i dont think it would be fair to use the term "stealing"..but i respect your right to voice out your opinion Smile

i actually learned to appreciate M5 becuse of that song with that very intro. if you read in my post about m5, i mentioned that. I like these two artists and i try and avoid saying that they sound similar. i dont agree that they are the same genre..

my teacher once said, there is no such thing (or it's very rare) to find originality nowadays, almost everything is inspired by something.

c'mon guys, GOOD VIBES!!!!!!!

I can't let it go its soo annoying.. everytime I hear Sunday morning I either think of Sunday Morning- No Doubt (because of its title) or VI- Jamiroquai....mostly Jamiroquai though..whY? because of the piano ..the piano tunes played are exact to Jamiroquai'a.. and then theres the lead singer's voice... I just recently saw a clip of him in his alternative band...he didn't attempt to copy Jays voice there! ..but if theres any copying being done.. its definately the piano...listen to it and compare!!! i Know im right! another thing... Jamiroquai was compared to Stevie Wonder a lot in the past but in a negative light yet Moron 5 is also being compared to Stevie except everyone thinks its fine ..Why is that?

I think I have a problem with this because people are more accepting Moron 5 and they receive more praise...... this may be a good thing though it may warm others to Jamiroquai's new music since most are unaware of their similarities? .... Surprised .

i never listened to marron 5 before, but i noticed people talking about their jami copy style, and aslo Jay defending them, but last day i was on a shop, buying a pair of adidas shoes and when i was paying the sound started, a song come up i said! hey this sounds exactly like virtual insanity, and i said to my dad! listen! what a copy of jamiroquai! he said yes, it's virtual insanity, then i noticed that should be those maroon 5.....
and now listening to hot tequila brown...dunno why...i remembered about that band........why?

Sounding like someone else doesn't mean it's stealing!!! Rolling Eyes There's a Daft Punk song & a No Doubt song & they both to me have similar sounds to Jamiroquai but that doesn't mean its stolen!!

Virtual Insanity + playing the ii-V7-I turnaround once rather than backcycling through the entire sequence and using substitutions + loads of pitch correction on his tore up ass voice - Zender's mad skills + cheesy hand claps - phat ass breakdown = Maroon 5 song

I completely agree with GOZA that the chord progression is the reason for all of this hoopla!!!!

If you are a musician you would also agree....although Moron 5 still isn't being original because the piano + the chords and the voice are very similar.

But you could argue that JMQ has used a progression that has already been used as well. That is because it is a standard JAZZ progression.

called the cycle of 4th's or whatever. This justs proves how musically talented Stuart and Jay really are: They could have easily used some other cheesy chords for Virtual Insanity and tried to pass it off as a great song, but that wouldn't have happened.

Cool I would also say that the only reason this hasn't come up before Moron 5, is because the general public dosen't typically listen to any Jazz standards on the radio or any where else for that matter. There are numerous jazz tunes that would sound like Virtual Insanity if one would search and find them. !!!

Peace out! Yo!
J Cool

Whew, what a kerfuffle over a single chord progression! jgrizz has it right - it really is not possible to call this "stealing" because what was being used is indeed a standard jazz progression. If people threw accusations around whenever someone used the same series of chords, we would never have any music to listen to. There are instances where people steal parts of or all of a song (kinda like when Vanilla Ice stole that Queen riff without altering it, and without even saying where it was from), and I have a problem with that. But ultimately, given the amount of music that exists, it stands to reason that someone is going to write something at some point that sounds like something that someone else wrote at some point. Listen carefully to the "Top 40" charts, and you'll hear how much alike it all starts to sound...

If there was a serious problem involving plagiarism, then JK would have said or done something about it by now. So for now, just chill out and be glad that you have good taste in music.

Okay, I just listened to the Maroon 5 song. The chord progression is NOT the same. The drum beat has a similar feel, and the chord progression is jazzy, but not the same. If you are still stuck on this, then perhaps I can offer a quick analysis.

Sunday Morning:
Key: C major (happy sounding clapping)
Progression: IV-V-I(with a nice little 7th in there for a jazzy feel)

Virtual Insanity:
Key: E MINOR (more funky sounding alright )
Progression: I get the feeling it's a i-vii-v-i with some ii and even a I in there somewhere, but I can't do it without a keyboard in front of me, because it is more complex and I am way rusty with analysis. One thing I can tell you is that the progression is somewhere around eight counts (or two bars) long, whereas the Maroon 5 progression is only four, and can be looped. So trust me - please take no offence - it is not the same, even if the feeling you got was similar. So just chill and don't worry after anyone stealing: Jamiroquai is the real deal, and the watered-down stuff on the top of the charts pales in comparison (though Sunday morning has a cute, fluffy feeling to the tune)

Sitting down and listening more carefully to Virtual Insanity has given me a new appreciation for the song craft that JK and the band are offering to listeners. Keep on writing and singing, JK! jumpinggreens

Neither I think that they steal Virtual Insanity initial rhythm. In fact, it could be fortuitousness. They are serious
