BRAINSTORMING: If Jamiroquai & JK left Sony/BMG....
buffaloman_R Hello, buffaloman_R

Smile First off, I would like to wish Happy New Year to all my friends and cohorts here on Talk and worldwide Smile. Now to the topic at hand, I have been doing alot of thinking about JK, Jamiroquai and it's music during the holidays. Ever since that JK diatribe about hating Sony/BMG & and all the controversy circulating about them forcing JK in a corner about releasing a Greatest Hits album, I have been wondering the following:

How would JK do on his own, with the band, on his own label?

I mean, let's be honest, JK CAN afford a buyout of the 2 album remainder of his 8 album Sony/BMG deal, which I would guess would cost in the single to double digit millions of pounds to settle. So, let's say JK and the band go on their own using a newly made JK Independant Record Label as a anchor, how would JK get the distribution to put out his new "Post-Sony" Jamiroquai material? Would Sony/BMG give him the proper contacts to good distribution companies to handle his indie material or not? I would think the best route for a independant Jamiroquai set of releases would be some type of "Fan Club" capacity, you know, fans join and pay a yearly due and receive new Jami news, CDs of new material or whatever through the mail. But that's just what I have come up with, so I leave the topic to you my Jamily! What are your thoughts? Thanks for listening and Peace!

Sincerely,
JamiroFan2000

Happy New Year Brent!

I just wanted to pull this part out, because I wouldn't be too sure that he can afford to buyout the 2 album remainder.
We don't know the details of that contract and like Jay said on the Verona DVD...I don't think he has that much money as it appears he has. We see the flashy stuff, but behind that are payments and debt and distribution of money to a lot, a lot, a lot of people that we don't see. I know he is wealthy, but I don't believe it's as it appears truthfully.
Politics of the business sweetie.

Distribution wouldn't be hard for Jay to get. He is established in the business with his own contacts. I've seen independent hip-hop artists get good distribution deals, and these are ones that still have day jobs. It's about who you know really. Networking. The whole music business is.

I love the fan club idea, but will that really profit Jay in the end? I mean, the man is successful, but he's still going to need to make money, good money to maintain his current lifestyle and I can't see a fan club idea doing it for him.

I think he will hook up with a more independent label to be honest with you and do some solo stuff with musicians or acoustic possibly. I think this will happen after a long break from music. I think he has to be gone long enough to miss it to want to return back to it on his terms that is.

These are just my thoughts though. We will have to wait and see!

i will give an example: Los Amigos Invisibles (Alberto se que te reiras de esto! hehehe)

Los Amigos Invisibles are one of the best latinamerican funk bands... they have no deal with any company... they got their own studio, their own record label and good distribution deals worldwide... (and they were founded in a third world country, rich in poor people, without so much help for success). They released their last album in Europe, America and Asia, never seen in Venezuela in any other band...

Jamiroquai is ten million times bigger than Los Amigos Invisibles, and if Los Amigos Invisibles are having lots of success, i'm sure Jamiroquai will be successful too... what i think Jay Kay needs to do, is recover the old sound, with the new guys, we are not gonna see Stuart Zender, Toby Smith, Darren Galea, Wallis Buchanan again in the band, but this is the opportunity for the new guys to become jazzy and have loads of success... i don't think that songs like "Feels just Like a shit" will do that for them!

I really believe in Jay Kay, and i think he can do it again... he did it with Dynamite, i talked so bad at the beggining, but this album is better than AFO, no more to say about that... i know he can still make the good music he's used to do! so, i can't wait for what's gonna happen with jamiroquai and its sony deal...

bye guys!

do you mean jay can cancel the deal? that's impossible, we know jay got tons of money, enough to do nearly all that he want, he can create a record label and do his own studio and do a solo career or jamiroquai career without sony, manage his own career, but he can't fight against sony, sony is so much mor epowerfull than him, and if he try to cancel the deal sony will make him go to ruine, is not the first time sony does this to an artist and it's not be the last time.
so before starting thinking what he will do after leaving sony, we need to see the 8 albums released (dunno if verona counts), if it does it's only the greatest hits and it's off, if no, we have to wait another 2 albums released with sony.

after that, when jay is free, he will have all the freedom to do what he want, but i doubt the music will turn to the start, we know sony choose the songs that will be on the album and don't want instrumentals and all that but Jay keeps doing the music he want ad this days, we must admit, is more new disco/funk than acid jazz.......

Hellou!

I don't think Verona counts, but a greatest hits double-album (b-sides or not) might count. I remember that George Michael struggled with Sony in the beginning of 90's. It was very much in the news then. Still I think he has a contract with Sony, though. I think Universal/Warner/EMI etc. have much more warmer politics towards the artists. This might get exciting.

hahaha

but you are right my friend there are lots independent musicians in southamerica. there's also a case like that here in peru. Libido was in the late 90s the best rock band here and they were signed after their first album (released independently and best selling here) by our beloved Sony. they made a fine 2nd album and got to be known in other countries. but after that they decided to go back to independent, they used the contacts they had made in the production of the last album and did a very good album which was also very cheap so it could compete with piracy. the result: they beat piracy, best album of the year here, got a couple of mtv awards, best selling album. all that without sony. i have the impression it is a bit different in europe and usa but who knows? maybe jamiroquai could do better without sony.

of course they can!!!
they're a big Jazz (oops Jazz is not related to Jamiroquai), Funk band... they're also great musicians, and without sony, Jay can be able to make whatever he wants... i'm sure of that...
