Do You Know Where You're Coming From?
I saw this subject in one of the other forums on here talking about the Jami track but then it got me thinking about ourselves: where do we all come from? I know probably most of us know where each other live but what about our backgrounds? Do we originate from the country we live in or have we emigrated there or have our ancestors done so in the near or distant pass?

I'm currently doing some research on my family tree. It was initially for my granmother's sake but now I've got into it I'm finding it stragely absorbing & fascinating finding out about my ancestors from long ago...

So tell us: do you know where YOU'RE coming from? Wink

My origins...now that I think about it, I notice that my origin is quite interesting (at least for me). My father is from Ghana, but he's just born there, his parents (my grandparents) are actually from Togo which is next to Ghana (both countries are in Africa, for those who didn't know). His surname is Akwetey. He once told me a story about this name, but I forgot it, so I'll ask him to tell me this story again sot that I can post it here. I still got a big part of my family in Ghana.

My mother is from Germany (that's why I'm pale). Her mother's surname was Rietheimer. "Rietheimer" is a very known and common name in the region. These Rietheimers were originally called "von Rietheim" (Rietheim is a small village in Baden-Württemberg, not very far from where I live), so they were noble. But they had to sell their title because one day they had no money anymore, and so they were simply called "Rietheimer".

I'll post more when I found out more about the origin of my grandfather.

My mother's English and her family is from Nottingham. Her side of the family goes back a while with Nottingham both on her mother's and father's side. We have a few relatives living there now Very Happy

The origins of my father's side is a bit more complicated. Its real americana... Pollett is the last name (French). Then theres maybe some Dutch or something? Irish? German? hodgepodge on the grandfather's side. grandmother's side is possibily african american? and also possibly more hodgepodge. There's native american in the family somewhere- not sure if its only by marriage but it also could be by blood. Anyway, its complicated and needs more research! Might never really know fully though...

ok... my mother was born in chile and her mother's parents were from denmark i think, haldansen is the last name, then.. my mother's father is from north part of Peru so they have both inca and spanish blood. my father was born in Lima same as me but his father came from Arequipa, a city in the south, and he had almost pure european blood. on the other hand, my father's mother is from Chincha, another city in the south of Peru and her ancestors were slaves that had come from Angola (not sure about this one) but she has also some inca and spanish blood. i got my dark skin from her.

Actually there's a very famous phrase here in Peru that you guys may find interesting:

El que no tiene de inga, tiene de mandinga

Which means something like "If you dont have a bit of inca, you have a bit of black" With this phrase we try to represent the mixture of bloods that our country is and how proud many of us are of it. we use it to fight racists, too.
