Artist Responsibility to Fans
Wanted your outlook on this...
Do you feel that artists have a responsibility to their fans beyond their contractual obligations?
Meaning - doing interviews on fan sites, having competitions and contests strictly for their hardcore fans, having a fan club where members get access to pre-sale tickets/merchandise, doing meet and greets and signings on their own outside of the planned ones designed to help promote?, etc.
Or do you think that none of this stuff is the responsibility of the artist? That all they really have to do is record, perform and obide by their contract with performances and 'organized' promotion?
I know it helps the artist and the relationship they have with their fans, who in the end are the ones that buy the records, but say an artist doesn't do those things - does it reflect badly on them and the relationship they have with their fans? or should that really not matter?
I know some of the things I mentioned Jamiroquai already does, but for conversation sake, if Jay would come in here and respond directly to your questions or something, would that have an impact on how you view the band...would your thoughts of them be elevated that he actually made the effort to strengthen the personal connection, or would it not matter? I use Jay because he is the front face of the band and one that Jamirotalk has not interviewed as of yet. Not that he is more important or less important than the others.
I'm thinking too much, but as I was writing an article, this came up. I asked this on 2-3 different artist boards, and I'm curious to see the answers and how they/if they vary.

 Hello,
 To Deesh: I hope you are alright and those illnesses are combated to the point that you feel better soon .
 I whole heartening agree with you deesh, artists, especially musical ones, should devote a little more time to their fanbase than appease their record contracts . In Jamiroquai's case, since TWOM, JK's fan interaction was always from a distance (On tour) or merely through a 3rd party (I.E. Linear note thank yous, record label concocted contests, bandmember messages on forums and message boards). But I think JK has satisfided us alot by churning out unforgettable new songs, far above their continued flimsy pop status, and does alot to make fans on all the green patches of the earth happy, evidence shown in their increased worldwide touring from 2001-2006 (  Yeah, I know that isn't completely true, but if you were in NYC during 9/11 the morning of, then you would tour cautiously wouldn't you? ). But it is evident that Jamiroquai's leaving from Sony, which is and has been a IMPORTANT discussion topic amongest the fanbase, is another clear example of JKing doing something for the fans and more importantly himself and his sanity. We fans have all experienced in some way the tyranny and black-heartedness of the Corporate Record Label (Most notably the nonexistant promotions), trying to squeeze as much profit out a established artist as much as they can, and Jamiroquai's case, they got their just dessert and whole of darn courses of profit! So in conclusion, Jamiroquai have done ALOT for the fans, and once they are free to pursue new labels OR the indie route, they will be met and graced upon by a happy and supporting worldwide fanbase that will be willing to part with ALOT of money to keep the music of Jamiroquai, in all it's unexpected turns and loops, out there to appease every fans of young and old! I think they should do what they should promise... like when they say "We'll be back in March"... They'll mean it
But I go back and fourth on all of this stuff. It would be nice if JK chimed in every once and awhile on here, but they gotta have their own lives too. I mean if I was touring for 2 years straight, anything work related (even as simple as puttin a blog entry on a website, would make me wanna hurl). Just the burnout facotr with bands that tour a lot makes me wanna play devil's advocate.

brent - thank you for the well wishes. i'm feeling okay, but not 100%, hence me responding to this at 4am! i want to sleeep! anyway, i guess the fear of 9/11 affected people in different ways. i was there about 4 hours before that happened and i went back about a month after. that's just me though, and all i had to consider was myself as jay had to consider his entire band and management. okay, now this sony thing...i'll put that in that topic - he's leaving and that's all that really matters. in creating this topic, i was thinking more about artists in general, not just jamiroquai. i think they do a lot for fans and they aren't assholes about things like bootlegs, autographs, pictures, backstage antics, etc. they respond to emails and i think the members of the band are some of the most generous artists i've EVER come across. EVER. from toby responding to emails (which he doesn't have to since he isn't even in the band anymore) to sola having competitions, fan focus and responding to emails, rob responding to emails, them doing interviews on this site, etc...this is all from my perception though. i feel you on churning out songs that are above pop star status and that being a gift to us. i dig your hope for the band once SONY is done. we shall see.
now pete - you know i love you, but my ears never heard I PROMISE YOU we'll be back in march. i think that the plan was to come back this month but it just couldn't happen or didn't happen for some reason or another.
you know i love you when i say this, but we can't act spoiled about it. we had the week of our lives and there are other countries that have never, ever seen them at all. i know i have this 'we are the world' attitude, that i can't help, but there are fans that didn't have the means to get to the concerts we went to. we truly don't know what went on behind the scenes. the dates could have been pulled. we'll never know. as fans, we aren't privy to all the information, the phone calls, the emails, how the sales reflect on their touring, so not sticking up for jay, but there are other places they SHOULD go visit and if that means us taking a back seat, then it's all good. there are so many things involved with touring. it's not just 'get on a plane, show up and play'! sure, i'd like to see them again, it'll happen when it happens sweetie. i think we should just accept that and keep it movin'. now, when you say work related....hmmm, you have to remember that their work is different from our work. most of them love their work. it isn't just their work, it's what they do and they love it. that's a damn luxury to wake up and do something you love. i hope we all find that someday.
sorry to be long winded...going to try and go back to sleep now, my head is pounding!

ok... the "word" promise wasn't used. But when we showed up Chi-town a week later for the that gig, he said "we'll be back in March" at that time too. I guess I'd rather be told nothing if there's even a shred of uncertainty than throwing that statement out there and then end up not coming.

They're on the same side of the Atlantic aren't they? Foreign's foreign, surely...
KIDDING, please don't get angry. They had been promising to do a South American tour in 'February / March 2006' for a long time before they went to the States last year, so maybe they just got confused about which 'America' they were talking about.
For what it's worth, yes, it'd be nice if they came on 'places' like this from time to time, but 'nice' is literally all it'd be. Singing and songwriting (and, perhaps, doing loads of coke and having sex with supermodels) may sound like a right load of fun and games to all of us, but once you're doing it for a living it becomes work.
For all the people who think 'if I ever get into a position where I'm known and loved by people, I'll always make more of an effort for my fans', it's all very well, but if I ever become a world-famous author, I can't honestly say I'm going to visit my own fansites to answer people's questions all the time, if at all. After all, we all need time to ourselves.
Besides, how would we feel if Jay came on here once, answered some people's questions, and never visited again? Not that anyone would believe it was Jay in the first place, of course...
