News from Rio de Janeiro gig - 25-03-2006
Hi there. Thanks for inviting me here.
I'll paste my review i wrote for Jamline. And yes, the set list on paper was the same as São Paulo, but they didn't play High Times, instead they played You Give Me Something.
I'm here to tell you that the show over here was fantastic. So much
energy, good vibes, good music. The crowd was fantastic. I can't stop
singing until now and will never forget this great show. Mr. JK is
getting older but he surely doesn't lose his energy.
Me and most of the people here missed some musics like Virtual
Insanity, Corner Of The Earth, High Times and some other obvious
choices, hehe. But the set list did the job very well. I didn't like
Time Won't Wait. I think it isn't that good live. Twenty Zero One had
some changes, I don't know if they changed it only for the South
American tour or if they've been playing that way for some time. I
didn't like either. I prefer it the old way, with all the syntethiser.
The Set List:
Canned Heat
Space Cowboy
Cosmic Girl
Revolution
Litlle L
Seven Days In Sunny June
You Give Me Something
Dynamite
Use The Force
2001
Black Capricorn Day
Love Foolosophy - Main vein
Time Wont Wait
Don´t Give Hate a Chance

Deeper Underground
Canned Heat was by far the most exciting one. I think because it was
the first music, and got everybody out of that tension of finally
seeing them live. Then to continue the vibe they came with Space
Cowboy and Cosmic Girl, two hits over here. Revolution was fantastic.
I've been to 1999 show and they didn't play any music from the first
album, my favorite. So imagine my frustration at 1999 any my hapiness
yesterday, hehehe. After these four musics I already had my show.
Everything else was a bonus, and what a bonus. As I said, only Time
Won't Wait didn't have that live feeling for me. All the others were
fantastic. SDISJ is awesome. Deeper Undergroung closed it as it was
opened in Canned Heat. Jumping, singing it loud and on such a good
vibe and energy that when it ended I felt like I wanted much, much
more. I could do it all over again, and again, hehehehe. WOW. "Do
caralho, muito foda", as we say over here, meaning fu***** great.
hehehehe. Some day I'll make my dream come true and watch a show over
there in Europe, hopefully in UK.
I have some photos over here. They are not so good, as I was not so
close to the stage, but I liked some, especially the number 65 with
the brasilian flag. Hope you enjoy it as well, if you are not already
tired o seeing Mr. JK and crew, hehehe.

David, if you see any photo you like and would like to post it on
funkin, just take it, it would be an honor, hehehe.
Sorry for the bad english. Hope every south american had enjoyed the
show as much as I did, and also hope they don't take so long to come
back here again!!!!!
Best wishes to everybody.[img][/img] |

Cool!
Thanks for that review. So, they played Seven Days instead of High Times, but just like here in Baires.
I haven't seen the pics yet, but I will, thanks a lot.

Hello, fellow Jmq fans!
The Rio gig was EXCELLENT.
And they played SDISJ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What more could I ask!!
My review won't be anywhere as exciting as Diego's or Rapouso's, but here I go anyway.
The setlist is indeed the one that Rapouso posted. They played SDISJ between Little L and YGMS and dropped High Times (a pity, because I also love that song live).
I arrived at Claro Hall at 9.30pm (the ticket said the show would start 10.30pm). I actually planned on arriving far sooner to be right at the front but ended up not making it. I feared having to stay right at the back and was somewhat apprehensive. When I entered the venue though, I was surprised and sad: it was practically empty... There were only around 600 people and my friend (whom I converted into a Jmq fanatic!) and I managed to stand very close to the stage at the fifth row. Some catchy dance numbers were playing, some people were dancing to them, but I have to confess that, as time passed, I looked around to see if the venue was getting fuller or not. People were coming in but in small groups and Claro Hall was still pretty empty. I immediately remembered the large number of people in the Argentine show and wondered if the Rio gig was going to be sort of a disaster.
How wrong can you be! Brazilians tend to leave everything for the last minute. My love for Jmq and my wish for the concert to do well made me forget that very important piece of information! By 10.30pm, Claro Hall was completely, totally, absolutely packed!!! Everywhere you looked, you saw lots and lots of people. There was no free space anywhere. A molecule of oxygen would have a hard time squeezing itself in to be able to enter the venue. People were smiling, dancing and cheered loudly when the screens showed a bit of the "Virtual Insanity" video and said Jmq were going to perform that night. You could feel the excitement building up!
Members from the Jmq crew ocasionally appeared to check the guitar, the bass, the microphones, the drum kit and so on and each time one of them walked on the stage, they were greeted with cheers by those standing by the stage. Brazilians do know how to party and it was crystal clear they (we) were going to give Jmq a great night to thank them for their third visit to our country. Every now and then people started chanting "Jamiro, Jamiro" and you just couldn't help wanting them to get on the stage straight away.
There was a very funny moment about 10 minutes before the show began. There was an announcement on the screens saying that people were not allowed to use their mobile phones and that photographing or filming the show was prohibited... The crowd roared with laughter. Everywere you looked people were ready and waiting with their their mobiles with cameras and digital cams firm in their hands and there was NO WAY anyone was going to tell them (and me, by the way) to keep them in their pockets or bags.
When Jmq hit the stage - one hour late than predicted, at 11.30pm - the place went mental! I was facing the passage from the wings to the stage, so when the members of Jmq walked on the stage, people screamed so loud that it was deafening. The backing vocalists seemed very pleasantly surprised, because they beamed and waved at everybody. I suppose it was their first time here and they didn't quite know what to expect.
The madness reached the peak when Jmq started playing "Canned Heat" and, a few seconds later, Jay appeared wearing the now famous coloured Poncho. The cheers and the applause went sky high and everybody - I mean, everybody - started jumping up and down to the sound of the song. You just couldn't get any happier!!
It was interesting to notice that people knew the words to the songs by heart and sang along all the time. After the big cheer for CH, people cheered even louder when they heard the first notes of "Space Cowboy", which is Jmq's best-known song here. Even those that don't know who Jmq are know this song! He then greeted us, "Hello, Rio de Janeiro", and - once again - the screaming was deafening. "Cosmic Girl" also got huge cheers ( he was already wearing the green and yellow Brazilian sports jacket) and so did - to my surprise - "Revolution", a song I never cared too much for. I have to admit though that it sounded really good live and made me anxious to listen to it on EAPE with fresh ears. "Little L" followed with great enthusiasm and we all sang and clapped throughout the song.
Jay then stopped and said they were going to perform a song from their new album. When he said "this is SDISJ", Claro Hall erupted with screams. People were just ecstatic! It is, after all, their current hit here and it plays every single day on the soundtrack of Brazil's leading soap opera. I didn't know the São Paulo setlist and had no idea they'd played the song there. It was such a fantastic surprise for me, since I ADORE the song!!! I was overjoyed!!!!!!! I spent the whole week saying that the only reason for not playing the song in Brazil would be not being told by Sony Brasil that it was a hit here. I vowed to castrate everyone at Sony if Jmq left Brazil without playing it... Thankfully though, no such radical action was needed. Jmq did a great version of SDISJ and, for me, if the concert had ended there, it'd still have been totally worthwhile (Am I sounding too corny? Sorry, but I'm feeling extremely happy today! I spent a brilliant night yesterday).
YGMS was somewhat different from the album, but it was excellent to listen to it live. My friend, a recent Jmq convert, beamed like a child, because he really adores it. Once again, the fans sang along and cheered at every available opportunity. The Dyn Tour has somewhat sweetened my appetite for "Dynamite", the follow-up song. I'd never cared for the song on the album, but it sounded excellent live (they even put a bit of "Tallulah" as an introduction) and I promise to listen to it now with much more enthusiasm.
"Use The Force" followed and... something very ODD happened... You'll be the judges...
Jay was standing at the centre of the stage, Paul, behind him and Rob, to his right (our left). Halfway through the song (very good, by the way, even though I missed the horn section), Jay turned to someone who was standing by the wings (whom I couldn't see) and imitated someone playing the guitar/bass. He rolled his eyes, pulled a bored face and "played" in a slow manner (as if he was a robot, a mummy). I got the clear impression he was saying that someone on the band was playing a dull, lifeless, emotionless set. At that point, I didn't know if he was referring to Paul or Rob. I imagined it was Rob, because Jay turned his back to him when when he did the mimic, but I was unsure.
My suspicions were confirmed when, a few songs later, he introduced the band. He started off with the backing vocalists and, to each of them, he gave a complementary adjective: "The lovely Ms...." When he introduced Matt (right before Rob), he joked he was the Brazilian Housewives' favourite member (a comment that got a good laugh from the crowd). However, when he moved on to introduce Rob, he did it so fast and so coldy ("On guitar, Mr. Rob Harris") that it became clear to me that Rob was the one Jay was "complaining" about. Jay didn't look at him, quickly turning his back to him and moving on to introduce Derrick. I don't know if they fell out, if this was the reason why Jmq walked on stage one hour late, but I can tell you that Jay wasn't happy about something regarding Rob.
More "complaints" were to follow. When the band was doing "Black Capricorn Day", Jay turned to the same person at the wings and imitated someone playing the keyboars and, judging by his gestures, I believe he either thought the keyboards were too high or too low. I didn't really perceive any such thing, but Jay was unhappy about something there. And, during another song (I can't remember which, sorry), he turned again to that very person and, putting his index finger (right hand) on the left side of his throat, he moved it to the right side of it, prentending to be cutting it. It meant that someone's head was going to roll later. I assume he was unhappy in both cases with the sound engineer, but it's only a wild guess.
During the concert, Jay introduced "Twenty Zero One" saying that they'd reworked it. The new version is very different. It's rockier in the beginning but more electronic towards the end. And the backing vocalists sing a sort of new chorus on it too. A nice change to a song that I like.
Afterwards, BCD got huge cheerss and the medley of "Love Foolosophy" (with the fans jumping up and down everywhere) and "Main Vein" was well received too. "Time Won't Wait" followed and was great too. Before lauching into "DGHAChance", he spoke against Bush and said we (the world) should get rid of him as soon as possible. The performance was sensational. DGHAC is one of my favourite tracks from the new album and live it was just as good.
Jmq then left the stage and when they returned, Rob and Matt started a long and interesting introduction of "Alright". From where I was standing, I could see Jay sitting behind the drum kit. I actually thought he was going to get another costume change, but he just sat there adjusting his hat. The place went wild with everyone dancing, jumping and singing along and, at one point, the band stopped playing and got us clapping and singing the chorus by ourselves over and over again. They started playing it again and, by the end, people were screaming and applauding vigorously.
When they returned for the encore, "Deeper Undergroud", some people went "ahhhhh" when they heard the first notes, because they knew DU was the last song. It was very energetic and, when it ended to thunderous applause, Jay thanked us (he said "obrigado", thank you, a few times throughout the show) and kissed the Brazilian Flag on his jacket - which was a very nice thing to do. He then rushed to where I was standing and jokingly smiled and posed for a few photos. Several flashes lightened him up. Then they left.
I forgot to mention that during one song, a group of people standing next to me put up a huge banner twice. Jay showed him his thumb agreeing with them. Minutes later Jay had the banner in his hand and showed it to us. It said: "Hey Jay. Brazilian Girls are hot. Let us go to your after party". He laughed and said: "I'll have to find out" [if there is an after party]. It was a funny moment.
I also forgot to mention that right before lauching into "Use The Force", he said: "This is from Synkronized... [he laughed] Ops, I fucked up... This is what you get for smoking too much pot. [laughed again] This is from Travelling Without Moving"...
Overall, it was a FANTASTIC show! Judging by people's reaction afterwards, everyone had a GREAT time. Jmq do know how to perform live. I have to say though that I missed the horns (which make the music sound fuller and richer) and also "Virtual Insanity" and "High Times". But you can't have everything, right?
I have to say though that I didn't feel Jay was totally relaxed and enjoying himself. I feel he was upset about something. He's always so alive and talkative but he seemed more "serious" (controlled) in Rio, which is odd, considering the fact that the Rio audience is known everywhere as a very enthusiastic one. He was definitely more cheerful in 1999 and on the Verona dvd. I do think something was bugging him. I just don't know what.
Sorry for the very long review, but I just wanted to include as many details as possible.
I have some pictures to share, but the quality isn't very good. I ended up borrowing a friend's cam and it was a bit ackward. I'll share it later. Rapouso's pictures, anyway, are great and show you what it was like in Rio.
JAMIROQUAI RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Take care, everyone!
