Sampled bass line
Specifically, 'Flash Light' by Parliament. I've had this in my head the last few days, it's got to be one of the best funk basslines I've ever heard (and I've heard an awful lot of funk basslines), but I can't help thinking there was some quite good '80s hip hop track that sampled it. Having said that, since I go to a lot of funk nights, it's quite possible I've just heard 'Flash Light' itself playing, and not realised what it was.

So, anyone able to help? Deesh? Anyone? Who sampled 'Flash Light'?

And if you've not heard it, you need to. You really NEED to...

hey sam - here is a list of hip-hop artists/songs that sampled 'flash light'. up to the mid/late 90's. kirk franklin (gospel artists) also used the sample for his song STOMP that came out in a year i can't recall. i'm not sure if the song you are referring to is on this list, i can't think straight right now, because i am so tired. i'm thinking you may be referring to salt n pepa's - 'i'll take your man', which came out in 1988. that was the first hip-hop tape i ever owned! that sample is right in the beginning and so obvious. it's recognizable right away. the other popular ones on here from the 80's/90's are C&C music factory, and digital underground. snoop's was just an interlude on his first album, so i don't think you are talking about that one. parliament is the second most popular sampled artist, followed closely by james brown. the first is the artist, second is the song. definite dope bass line. okay, off to bed. i am soooo tired:

Dammit, Deesh, I hope that didn't hurt! Thanks a lot! I've heard the Salt 'n' Peppa one, yes, but the one I was thinking of specifically was 'Things That Make You Go Hmmmm'. Had no idea Parliament were the second most sampled artist, but looking at your list I suspect they'd only be about tenth if it weren't for Digital Underground! Does George Clinton do their production, by any chance?!

Thanks again.

hey sam -

i just copied and pasted that from a hip-hop sample website. it lists all the artists that has been sampled and then the song that samples them. i just was responsible from the knowledge of the first paragraph. i actually made a mistake when i just re-read that because parliament is the most common of samples, followed by james brown.

i'm not sure about clinton doing some of the production -- i'll check that out when i get back home.

c&c music factory - what a joke group!!

Haha... yes. Well, the DJ friend of mine (the one who does pre-production stuff with the Heavies) like to drop it into his set mixed in with all the proper funk and (small bits of) hip hop he plays. He likes the way that despite it being much worse than the other stuff, nobody stops dancing...

And I'd always thought JB was the #1 sampled artist of all time... though I did read that IN AN INTERVIEW WITH HIM, and knowing his ego he's hardly likely to call himself second best, is he now...

Oh and don't worry about checking out whether Clinton did the production for Digital Underground, that was a joke. Because I can't think why one group would sample the same song so many times unless there's some ulterior motive...
