Your Encounter with Jay Kay
Some of you have actually come face to face with Jason Kay - in an elevator, at an auto dealership, backstage, in traffic court, etc. For the benefit of the rest of us curious souls, what was your encounter like? Were you surprised? Disappointed? In love? Inquiring minds want to know. (True tales only, please.) Do tell. _________________ -SITTIN' IN THE SUMMER SUN |

OK. Here I go.
First of all, I was still amazed by the show they gave, and I wasn't even waiting to see them or him backstage, I thought 'well... that was great, now I go home now'.
But when I was face to face with him, I found myself very calm, I talked english very well despite all my nervousness (I often write in english, hardly talk) and he is not so much different of how I imagined him. I still don't think he is that small, like some people say. But they all behaved like gentlemen (except for Hazel.... cuac!) and that must be the best day of my life.

Hi there,
I will tell my little story, although the "oldies" on this site might have heard it several times from me meanwhile...hehe... ... but anyways - I copied my story from one of my first postings here at jamirotalk.
In addition it explains a bit my addiction to soap-bubbles!
| Quote: |
Berlin, Arena, October, 28, 2001: Me and CosmicBear were standing right in front of the stage, under the microphone of Jay in the very first row, enjoying this wicked fantastic amazing concert of Jamiroquai.
In my hand a little bottle of soap-suds, trying to make soap bubbles dedicated to the band. It has been a spontaneous idea, perhaps to be conspicuous or something like that, instead of throwing flowers or teddy bears.
It wasn't actually easy to make solid bubbles, because of the hot air in the room and the lather on the liquid.
But however it did its work, Jay recognized them and tried to catch some bubbles. But most of them didn't reach him.
But then, finally, while they were performing Space Cowboy, Jay managed to burst one big bubble ...
  YES! STRIKE!!!
Then he said: "Sure, you can't burst my bubbles..."
By the way, you can hear him saying this in the bootleg!! (Berlin, Arena 2001 - Space Cowboy, ca. 5:22 min - start hearing at 5:00 min. maybe)
(...)
A few weeks later in December, after the concert at Brixton Academy, London we were waiting at the back entrance for something to happen and we actually met Rob, Nick and finally Jay. While he gave me an autograph on my shirt I asked him, if he remembered my bubbles in Berlin.
The situation was so funny, he was laughing loud and he was wondering about my question. I don't know why! He imitated my words and said: "Do you remember my bubbles, do you remember my bubbles? Ha ha ha...oh yes, I remember your bubbles, and I was a little concerned about you!!!"
Did I say something wrong? Huh? Strange...
Since this day the soap-bubbles have been my "trademark"
Me on the left side. Sorry for the bad quality - it was the camera of the girl on the right, and we made a photocopy in a shop and we never managed to get in contact for a better copy of the pic... ... too bad.

Yeah, that's it. I think if I had the chance to meet him again I would ask other things... ... oh well...

i actually like that picture mouse.
i met them in person on the 2005 tour...they are wonderful men and women. all of them. i have so many funny stories from the encounters with the band (too long to tell here). over those 5 days, i got to talk to them a few times and chill with them twice. they were so funny and just charming, as they know they should be with fans, but this just seemed more real.
i was more surprised at my reaction to them. it sounds corny, but i just felt like i was chilling with friends..my boys i didn't scream or go crazy until after i left them and i was like 'is this for real' hahaha!
i was in awe for all about a minute or so meeting them all, and then it was chill. for 14 years i'd loved this band, and i thought i'd go crazy when i met them, but i didn't. i was very humbled and just relaxed. that's when i realized that it wasn't them that i loved so much, it's the music really. when i think of it, i smile...good times, good times!
the pictures are in the 'lucky fans meet jamiroquai' thread. |

Tib,
Their unpopularity in the USA works in our favor as far as meeting them. The gigs are relatively smaller (about 1500 - 2000 people), and it's easy to meet them afte the gigs or even before if you are there early. You aren't competeing with 10,000 or more fans to meet the band. Also, they aren't recognizable to most people here like 2 fans met Rob while walking around in Chinatown in NYC.
They are also really peronable, I believe because it isn't mobs of people trying to meet them and go crazy. It's either die hard fans or tricked out groupies. You also aren't waiting in line with tons of other people. It was the same 10 people both nights.
I think we are lucky in that sense because if it had been a European gig or festival with thousands of people, I doubt I'd have that same story to tell about my 7 days in chilly October. |

Deesh -
This makes sense. Now...if only we can get them to return to the U.S. so I can give the ol' backstage ting a try. _________________ -SITTIN' IN THE SUMMER SUN |

I was with Deesha on two nights in October 2005 and I guess we share a lot of the same annecdotes. My first meeting of Jay was in July 1997. I've told this one numerous times and I won't really go into details but that is where I met Stu and those of you who know me, know what happened with him On that occassion, my cousin and I were waiting by the stage door at the David Letterman show, as we had not been able to get in to see the performance. Jay was eating in a chinese restaurant next to the Ed Sullivan theatre and was gracious enough to sign autographs and pose for pics. The one thing that I remember most about him was how gorgeous his brown hair looked (I can't say the same for those nasty highlights he has now). Oh, yeah and that same September Jay gave me a bottle of orange gatorade during a concert in the Paramount Theatre, NYC...
The second time I saw Jay was right before the Sept. 10, 2001 performance in NYC. My husband and I had been waiting by the stage door (again) with a girl from Boston since 9 am! At around 5pm he and Sola arrived accompanied by a blonde girl and his body guard. He was carrying a box which I can only assume contained his hat. Again he posed for pictures and signed autographs.
The third, as I mentioned before, was shared with Deesha and many others, so there is no need to expand on it, but I agree that they were all very personable and very accomodating to us fans. I can't deny that I wasn't excited to see them and chat with them and actually hang out with them for a while, but it felt more like I was with friends rather than with celebrities. They were all so nice and warm to us and I can't say enough about how at ease they made us feel!
Being in the US makes it easier because many people don't know who they are and it is easier to have contact with them. Deesha says I have a Jaydar, but I think I just happen to be at the right place at the right time
I would like to add some pics on here, but I don't know how! HELP! _________________ Missing the vibe...1993-1998

Amongst other fans, I met Derrick and Jay at the Sony mobile launch in London last September. It was a bizarre experience, feels like only yesterday. I got up in my apartment in Geneva at 5am, I was in London by 8am. The funny thing is that I have NEVER been that early for work (which is 25minutes away from my apartment), let alone being in another country for 8am!
I waited around Kings Road, went for a coffee, went back to buy my phone and waited for the boys. It was really nice. I was terribly nervous, all the time I kept thinking "I must tell him this, I must tell him that", but when I met him finally, I could not remember what I wanted to say.
I shook their hands when I met them, they were quite suprised to hear I flew in from Geneva to see them. Derrick said "come and sit next to me", so I did. Before Jay sat down, he asked me what time I woke up to catch my flight. Then he got his bottle of water, stood facing me and started drinking. Then the whole world went still I then said to him "come and sit down" and patted the seat next to me I cant believe how cheeky I was really, though I felt so relaxed around them, I thought "just be yourself". Then I said "Smile for the camera"
They were both great. They laughed, talked with me for about 10 minutes, asked me questions like "what do you do in Geneva and why are you there?", "why did you fly here, are you mad? (something like that)", "why does everyone love STM", and just said I was brave to get up so early for them. I think they were impressed with what I had done. Jay said he was tired from the Cardiff gig the night before, and he wanted to sleep.
We talked about the Montreux gigs, Dynamite for a few seconds - told him BDC was a groovy songs with filthy lyrics...he went all shy and replied "yes it is".
I called him "sweet", he laughed and said that's what him mum calls him. I replied "yes, I am a mothering kind of person", he laughed.
I asked whether I could give them both a kiss and they said "yes, of course!". So I did. At one point, one of the men standing there said "We are going to have to hurry you up". I looked at the boys and then looked at the man and said "Hm...I flew 1000 miles for this. Am staying here for 2 more minutes".
Derrick was a true gentleman. He was very sweet and said "wow, you are a true fan to come all this way".
And they both wished me a safe journey back. They were so lovely.
It was a fantastic day, and what was better, was that I got photos from the PR company who was taking them. Nice photos. I have them framed and my wall at home looks like the MTV wall of fame!
I will always remember that day. It does make me smile a lot.
I will post pictures here soon for those who haven't seen them. _________________ Jamiroquai - it's stitched into the clothes that I wear... |
