Paul Turner uses both 4 and 5 string bass guitars! The 4 string is a Fender 66's JazzBass (or sometimes a 77's jazzbass) and the 5 string is a Musicman Stringray. |

...4 strings or 5....it doesn't make that difference...i prefer 4 strings patterns...they are more...groovy...
listen to the past bassist....EWF. Chic. others....simply, the 4 strings groove....
and another thing: the Music Man (and also Fender Jazz Bass) IS the funky bass. No others. |

4 or 5 strings doesn't change anything in the sound or the style, 5 strings allow just to access lowers sounds. You can do a lot of stuff with a 4 string, and you can just do even more with a 5 string bass! |

a trip down memorylane (since this topic was'nt raised up since april)
just been to North Sea Jazz and noiticed Paul having three basses. At least one 4 and one 5 string couldn't tell what the forth was, didn't pay enough attention to it.
btw. Paul was great that evening |

5th string bass only can give you
possibility to play lower notes, but it is not the most important thing about bass guitars. Oldschool funk & soul bassists played 4 string fenders and
sounded so cool - Chuck Rainey, James Jamerson, Larry Graham and many others. Stuart Zender played 4 string basses a lot,
more than that, his favourite bass now is old 4 string Fender Precision.
As for Paul, he is super cool amazing bass player and he plays white 5 string Music man stingray 5 and F Bass a lot. but the coolest sound he makes when he take his white jazz bass made in 1978, which he said is his favourite bass. |

from doing the transcription books (new one out now by the way! ) i noticed that zender switched to 5 string for the TWM album. Before that he used 4 string basses. _________________ Bass Transcriptions coming soon! |
