DUBAI ARTICLE
Hi everyone, this was posted at Funkin.com earlier...

Hoping for dynamite

Acid jazz and funk band Jamiroquai is performing at Dubai Media City on Thursday night

As a reporter you get used to people running to "Dubai time". But it still took me aback when Jamiroquai turned up one-and-a-half hours late for a press conference at the Mall of the Emirates.

Imagine then my disappointment when they announced lead singer Jay Kay was not coming due to "jet lag". The anti-climax prompted some media to leave and those who stuck it out were so disenchanted it meant the whole Q&A shebang lasted all of 15 minutes.

Groggy

In fairness, the three co-members of the British band who did show looked groggy as they made their entrance at Virgin Megastore. They began the press conference by saying, rather lethargically, they had just come from a tour of South America, hence the jet lag.

Drummer Derrick McKenzie, who has been with the band for 12 years, tried to inject some energy into proceedings by saying: "It?s going to be a very upbeat show with lots of life - we?ll be a lot more lively than we are now."

Being back

It turns out Rob Harris, guitarist, lived in Qatar for seven years and left when he was 11 years old. Now 34, he says: "Being back in Dubai is kind of strange for me. Things are developing so fast here. I would like to go back to Qatar to see how it?s changed."

As well as squeezing in the press conference, he plans to catch up with one of his old schools friends before leaving on Friday.

End of contract

I ask the band how they will celebrate when their greatest hits album is released in November, finally freeing them from their eight-album contract with Sony after 14 years.

McKenzie answers: "We?ll celebrate by making more music. We?ll get started on new tunes and we?ll keep on writing."

Anonymity

When asked about Kay attracting all of the attention and keeping the spotlight away from them, percussionist Sola Akingbola replies: "That?s how we designed it. We love it, we love the anonymity." If they want it to stay that way, they?ll have to work harder at getting Kay out of bed.

Success story

Jamiroquai?s unique sound catapulted them to fame with the success of their first single, When You Gonna Learn, in 1992.

On the strength of that debut release, Jay Kay went on to sign an unprecedented £1 million (Dh6.42 million), eight-album record deal with Sony BMG Music Entertainment in the same year.

Jamiroquai has since sold more than 20 million albums and taken home a Grammy and five MTV Awards. The band has also toured the world and won international acclaim.

Their latest album, Dynamite, was released in June last year reaching Number 3 in the UK charts. It is regarded as Jamiroquai?s most diverse work to date and brings together funk, house, disco, acoustic and electronic music.

The hats

Jay Kay?s trademark hats have evolved with is career. In the beginning his mum, jazz singer Karen Kay, was the creator of his weird and whacky headgear.

But more recently Kay has been designing his own and getting them custom made by the likes of London milliner Cozmo Jenks and New York designer Rod Keenan.

Kay once famously appeared on stage wearing just a hat and boxer shorts.

DUBAI ARTICLE II
Quote:
JAMMING WITH JAMIROQUAI
BY GOUSIA AHMED (Contributor)

13 April 2006

Jay Kay may have been jet-lagged when he touched down on the white sands of Dubai but that is no reason why he wouldn't get the crowd rocking on their feet tonight at the DMC amphitheatre with the Dynamite concert.

The singer may have been too washed out to attend a Press conference but his band members were considerate and tactful enough to put on a smile for the cameras and answer questions with wit and grace.

Keeping etiquettes, star egos and time aside, the concert is bound to blow like dynamite with up-beat numbers, empowering excitement and groovy tunes that will linger into the wee hours of the night after nine (but don't count on Jay Kay to be on time). The highlight of the evening is Jamiroquai's latest album Dynamite but that is not all! The group will belt out a mix of the old and new albums as well as their "great hits' and the "not so great hits" as band member Derrick pointed out with a dry sense of humour.

Having a band of members from varied backgrounds, how does that mix influence the music Jamiroquai makes?

Being a band still allows us to be individualistic, bringing in our creative vibes and inclinations. Derrick's taste in music has an influence of reggae that becomes part and parcel of Jamiroquai's music though that does not mean we are trying to make reggae music. It is the personal and individualistic touch and flavour that every band member brings in that really spices up out music and makes the band more wholesome and complete. We work on complimenting each other and not beat each other out.

Do you think Jay Kay is the only one from the band who gets most of the media attention? If so, are you comfortable with that?

Well we enjoy the anonymity! (Laughs)

Earlier on, the band mentioned even the line up of the group had not changed Jamiroquai's music would still sound the same. Does this mean that maybe Jay Kay has more control?

Each musician has a different personality and that is in sync with the overall persona of the band. However, we play like a team and Jay Kay maybe our striker but we also have mid-fielders and we also need to play defence. So all in all it’s the package that works.

Do you think Jay Kay will go solo?

Ha-Ha....Wish he would! (Laughs)

The band was right — with or without Jay Kay, the group still has its fun element and its sense of humour in place and that goes a long way when dealing with media that haunts stars.

Oh come on, any guy with a decent level of personal hygiene prefers boxers. More room to breathe...

Have a look at Jay on the TV show "what not to wear" - he says he's a plain old 3 in the packet briefs type of guy - the interviewer lady tried to get him to show off his underwear but he SSOOOO wasn't going to show her - great interview Smile
