Acid Jazz
it appears some other people are interested in Acid Jazz, which is what many people classify jamiroquai (early jamiroquai at least) as. It seems to me most acid jazz groups are not very well known. Those that are tend to be a lot different than jamiroquai. It's hard to find good stuff similar to jamiroquai. The mellow keyboards, funky basslines, and other things (didj, horn shots, etc) combined with Jay's elastic voice make them one of the best.
So what are your favourite acid jazz artists? Describe them.
Four 80 East - Cruising music. Mostly Instrumental, hip hop beats, sax and synth. Somewhat ambient.
St Germaine - Interesting acid jazz. Hard to describe, not for everyone.
Air - French band. I like their Virgin Suicides soundtrack.
Jazzanova
Incognito

The Acid Jazz record label which released Jamiroquai's first single. A nice little flash thing on Acid Jazz and lots of information. |

You've mentioned almost all my favourites /St Germanie-why do you think it's not for everyone?/Jazzanova, Incognito,Brand New heavies
and I've got two another....Freakpower/I am not sure if this counts as acid jazz - probably too funky / and Medeski Martin and Wood-great grooves and wicked harmonies /I am not good at describing /
Anyone knows MMW? |

St Germaine verges on repetitive samples and the music is mostly rhythm and ambience rather than melody or harmony.
Some of it's alright, like Sure Thing...but I find I can only listen to it once in a while.
The problem with that kinda music is that it's essentially one-dimensional, and over time there simply isn't enough going on to hold your attention and aural fascination. It's a one-liner,
say it once => sound good
say it again => ahh, you just said that but alright, what else you got?
keep saying it => ok, you're working from a very limited phrase book and
I'm getting very bored |

while that is true, it sort of uses the looping groove as typical in hip hop type music, except not with the same style. I find it works well for faster-paced higher-energy stuff but it gets boring with ambience. That's why I said not for everyone.
But repetition can work sometimes. |

I bought a Brand New heavies greatest hits CD and I can´t say I liked it. They havn´t got anything to do with jamiroquai, and I find both styles so diferents...
I gess I have to say I prefer soul or funk to the Jazz thing...
Try some Sly and the familly Stone, Stevie Wonder, Kool and the Gang, Edwing Moses or some Earth Wing and Fire Stuff and tell me what you thing. |

BNH
I have The Brand New Heavies "Dream come true: the best of the acid jazz years" which was released in 1998. That's a record full of acid jazz, funk, & fusion jazz pieces. It's truly a fantastic compilation. BNH is surely one of those bands that got worse when they changed their record label.

Agree with you, Geuze. BNH was much better early on.
Also check out Akimbo (Nick Van Gelder is the drummer), Groove Collective, Action Figure Party, Galactic, James Taylor Quartet, and Soulive.
I like MMW, but some of it I think maybe a little TOO trippy for me.
Glad to see some interest in Acid Jazz! |

...trippy...That's the expression I was looking for....
I liked MMW with Scofield on his "Go-go" album very much. Their music is sometimes really trippy, but e.g. my friend used MMW for one theatre play and it was great
It's sad and I 'm afraid it's more than usual ,that sometimes original musical influence is getting weaker and weaker with every new album...../And I'm not talking only about BNH... ......

Good picks Freddie!
Hello, :bm_r:
Good music picks Freddie, honestly, I'm not a big fan of acid jazz, that is, my interest in acid jazz started and ended with Jamiroquai. But ever since I have listened to the Jamiroquai edition of "LateNightTales", I have started exploring other artists of that genre, or sub-genres like Dexter Wansel (Still waiting for my darn import of Dexter's "Life On Mars" to come in...UGH!!!), Leon Ware, and Johnny Hammond. Not in a complete change from my music listening habits, just doing a little, as I said before, music exploration. Thanks for listening and Peace!
Sincerely,
JamiroFan2000

Yay, a topic about AJ!
You forgot to mention Corduroy! They were amazing, sadly no longer together. Check out the first 3 albums ('Dad Man Cat', 'High Havoc' and 'Out Of Here'), or if you want to just get an idea of their sound, get the compilation albums 'Corduroy In Mini!' or 'London England'. Not to everyone's taste, but a few Jamiroquai fans are also Corduroy fans. In fact, it was a Jamiroquai fan who took me to see them live, twice. Ah, the 90s :-)
Also a big BNH fan. I didn't think much of that compilation album. It's not a very good example of their style. Better to buy any of the albums. In fact, just buy them all! Anyone know where I can get my hands on 'We Won't Stop' other than as a Japanese import?

There is also a series of CDs called "This is Acid Jazz" and other similar things that really help you get into the not-as-well-known people and groups. |

About Acid Jazz, I found a vinyl called "Jazz", released on the Acid Jazz label time ago. It's just a compilation, but sincerely it's one of the better things I have to heard in my life. I want to buy it, but by now I prefer to go to the music shop to listen and enjoy for a minutes while I'm getting the enough money.
Peace of mind & Listen Vibraphonic! Another great Acid Jazz band.

I recently downloaded a couple songs by them, coincidently before you mentioned them, and I like them!
One thing that confuses me is genre names
What exactly makes Acid Jazz different then Chill, Lounge, Trip Hop, Eurobeat ethnic fusion, etc?
There are a lot of different sounds and it's hard to catagorize. I think of Jamiroquai, BNH, incognito, that sort of instrumentation and sound as Acid Jazz. Chill is a more electronic approach? Lounge I don't really know much about. Trip hop seems more techno-hiphop. But hmm. |

About Trip Hop, well...I have listened Trip Hop, and I like so much his darkness and peace. You can find a lot of bands (the more famous are Portishead, Massive Attack & Tricky) and some artists makin' Trip hop, in his begins. If you seek for, I recommend you to listen Everything But The Girl or Sneakers Pimps too. Lamentably, the Trip Hop style don't have a great catalogue, and the major part of the singers don't work just in his band.
If you can't understand about Trip Hop too, it mix the dark turntable scratches with the beautiful voice of the singers and the quite bass lines. A great music to enjoy on your armchair peacefully.
Peace of mind, Nicolas . _________________ I'm slidin' down the wall
