Jamiroquai’s Jay Kay won’t talk on the phone, so instead of a brown-nosing interview with subtle cut-downs added later, we have an abridged feature article with slightly more heavy-handed sarcasm. And just in time for their concert at Olympiisky.
If Jason Kay, front man of Jamiroquai, ever consciously chose to be anyone’s disciple, he chose the right person. The band has an energetic mix of disco and funk influences that bears striking resemblance to the music of a young Stevie Wonder, and such a resemblance is a grand, grand thing. Music snobs, geeks and a certain group of element writers would say that even if it is grand, such second-hand music is parasitic and therefore unfit to be called music at all, but take a music geek’s advice and never listen to what music geeks say.
And their front man — you’ll love the guy. Jay Kay’s flashy antics have made this outspoken pop star a favorite target of tabloids worldwide. His image has all the makings of a trashy newspaper’s wet dream: the fleet of sports cars, including a Mercedes G-Wagon, a Bentley convertible, and three Ferraris; Buckinghamshire Manor, the ?6 million 18th-century country estate he calls home; the glamorous former fiancee, British TV presenter Denise Van Outen; the quirky Gucci-meets-skate chic outfits; the hat collection; the music videos; the debaucherous party habits, troubled family history, and public tantrums. The above details have earned the cocky Cat in the Hat a reputation as a spoiled, hard-nosed star who lives life in the funk lane. But they’re all lies, of course, since he spends most of his spare time growing organic carrots and protesting the war in wherever. Such notoriety is always a nice touch for a platinum band.
And guess what? The band might be disbanding this year, having finally wormed its way out of the slave-driver record deal made early in its career. Jamiroquai received a meager ?1 million out of it, and it’s had them releasing album after album, reissues and compilations, just for the sake of meeting the contract terms. So, naturally, they’re all sick and tired of it, as any sane person would be. Once they get the legal side sorted out, likely they will be falling apart as soon as possible, and happy about it, too.
On the other hand, selling more than 24 million records worldwide has its rewards, not the least being the freedom to pursue whatever sound or style strikes your fancy. Since the early 1990s, Jamiroquai has been a worldwide phenomenon, with a string of chart-topping albums crossing pop, funk and dance divides and making Kay a star. So even if you’re under a record deal, you can still be as creative as you like, and that’s all a musician really wants, right?
Wrong. As a matter of a fact, no matter how skillful and artsy their music is, listening to it album after album gets you thinking it’s the same funk-disco-pop thing over and over again, ad infinitum. You should see their music videos. The band’s always jumping around and cool effects are flying and everything is being done so that no one will realize it’s the same blasted song as last year, only with new lyrics, a new drum beat — funk and not disco — and a new bass line. You don’t even have to compose those — you just play them in the required “style.”
And yet they’re a great band and absolutely fantastic live. After The Rolling Stones and Queen, Jamiroquai are perhaps the only other band that feels at home on stadium stages. There are always many other musicians up there with them, but they still sound as tight as an instrumental power trio.
And if my guess is correct, this might just be your last chance to see them, ever. So don’t let snobbish ideas get in the way of seeing what is now, perhaps, the only living successful pop-funk outfit.
Tickets start from 600 rubles on parter.ru. Jamiroquai takes the stage of Olympiisky at 5 p.m. on June 18.

Well who says they are quitting?
However I would like to see some confirmation of one of the bandmembers that they are NOT going to stop and some information of how they are planning to do the next couple of years..
Maybe a band member can react to this question somehow?

Derrick told us while back that they will celebrate the end of the contract of Sony, recording more stuff. That's what I remember. Maybe they will probably have a break after 2 consecutive tours, but they'll definetely be back.
