The nicest moment of the gig for me was that for the first few songs, some chap called Stuart decided to come and watch from right in front of where we were standing (almost). Jay was singing 'Space Cowboy' to him and the two of them were smiling at each other a lot. The nice man called Stuart was applauding louder than any of us and seemed really made up to be in the media area. I suppose he must be a really long-standing fan, or something... Wink

Here's an article I found about JMQ at the concert...

All you need is Lovebox
Reviewed by Chris Elwell-Sutton, Evening Standard (24 July 2006)

As the sun set on Victoria Park last night, Jay Kay had thousands of happy people clapping in time with the kind of performance his group, Jamiroquai, can always be relied upon to deliver.

Clad in a South American poncho and futuristic plastic Native American headdress, Kay pranced round the stage exhibiting his impeccable showmanship, confidence and sense of rhythm, whipping up the crowd with slick moves and soulful falsetto yelps as he banged out hits like Return Of The Space Cowboy.

It was a fitting end to a slickly-run weekender that caught the mood of the current generation of party people perfectly.

A few years ago, rockers, ravers and hip-hoppers occupied quite distinct strands of youth culture, separated by clothing, lifestyle, language and attitude.

Now, these barriers are breaking down, a fact reflected in the line-ups of this summer's music festivals. Rock acts, DJs, reggae, urban and world music are now being enjoyed by the same crowd at the same event.

Just as traditionally guitar-based events like the V Festival and T In The Park have introduced more electronic music, so this year's Lovebox festival, which for the last three years was an electronic event organised by dance duo Groove Armada, boasted a more varied bill than ever before.

Saturday's event had focused largely on dance music, featuring Hot Chip - whose cool Basement Jaxx-like fusion of dance music, soul and rock has made them one of the bands of the moment - as well as Xpress 2 and a headline set from Groove Armada.

Yesterday's leg was not filled to capacity, perhaps because it appealed less to the event's core fan base, combined with the fact that an all-day drinking session on a Sunday is seen by many as a recipe for a hellish Monday. Nonetheless, the healthy number who attended were clearly glad they did.

And who can blame them? New York-based Englishman Mark Ronson was one of the early highlights. Like a quietly confident puppet-master, Ronson pulled the strings from a low-key position halfway up the stage, as various musicians and a DJ created a jazz-funk sound, occasionally interspersed with hip-hop.

The well connected DJ/producer/guitarist brought Lily Allen on stage to sing a track on which they'd collaborated. She may have been smoking a fag throughout her performance, but Allen failed to set the crowd alight, offering evidence - if any were needed - that it's never meant less to have a No.1 single.

The rock area hosted by the Kill All Hippies club night was rocked good and proper by hotly tipped newcomers Little Barrie and their spunky combination of stripped-down punk rock rhythms and screeching, bluesy guitar solos.

Another raved-about act to hit Lovebox was Gogol Bordello, whose infectiously energetic 'gipsy punk' sound sent the Rumble Teaser tent into a shouting, clapping, sweaty frenzy.

And what better way to recover from a frenzy than with the mellow reggae vibes of Jimmy Cliff. The Jamaican old-timer was a consummate class act, his high, heart-rending voice every bit as sweet as it was in the Seventies as he provoked widespread dreamy smiles with classics such as Many Rivers To Cross, interspersed with a bit of ska and gospel.

The trend for more eclecticism is producing an increasingly homogeneous festival scene, but Lovebox indicates that it has motivated promoters to raise the bar, programming their events more creatively. If this is the shape of summer festivals to come, there will be no complaints from me.

Thanks Anna, you too! I'm gonna have to sell some to be the next Bill Bryson, though (not to mention put on a lot of weight and grow a beard!)... I'd be happy enough with being southern South America's William Dalrymple (travel writer who writes beautifully and entertainingly about the Indian subcontinent)!

As for the rest of the fest, I'd more or less agree with the LES reviewer Samantha's just quoted. Although he clearly hasn't seen the AFO tour if he still thinks that head-dress is futuristic!

Jimmy Cliff was ACE, Mark Ronson was good - although he seemed a bit peeved that us at the front were all cheering for Zender more than him! Come on, he knows Jamiroquai are playing the same stage a few hours later - what did he expect?! Would've been nice to see him do something original as well, rather than only (admittedly very well done) re-arranged covers of other people's stuff.

The Feeling were the nicest surprise for me, though. I don't listen to the radio often and only ocassionally watch Jools Holland any more, so hadn't heard any of their stuff before. From the name, I was expecting some crappy Coldplay clones... but they're a proper rock and roll band, playing proper rock and roll. And they'd just got off a 9-hour flight from LA as well! They looked every bit as jet-lagged as their lead singer claimed they were ('Who was here yesterday? Did you bother going to bed last night? Because if you didn't, you probably feel how we feel right now...'). Seriously, the poor keyboardist actually looked like he was going to pass out at any moment - yet they still managed to show more energy than 90% of the other acts. Great stuff.

Oh and I forgot to say to all the Italians (how many Gianlucas are there?!) - sorry I missed you last night as well! I was so looking forward to some heated debates on calcio...

If anyone wants to add me to MSN now that you've met me and discovered I'm not as angry as I seem (well... not all the time anyway Wink) please feel free... it's in my profile.

After meeting the coolest people on Sunday, it's about time that I joined Jamirotalk! You were all so incredibly cool and humble, which made that in itself one of the greatest days ever. The energy and vibe on the front row was just phenomenal, and the pictures came out rockin'!
All the reviews were spot on, and I'm just on this super high from the band, and the people from Jamily that I got to meet. Thankyou for making it the day for me and us! Love to you all.
Peace,
zed.

Could be nice to organize a yearly meeting in a different place so everybody has the opportunity to be there once ? What do you all think ?
