Little man's disease
I know a bit vague topic title but ...

Last weekend I was at the World Superbike round in Assen and there I spoke with former champion James Toseland who rides for the Dutch Ten kate team.
He performed the weekend before with his band Crash during a party at Ten Kate and that didn't sound bad. They played only covers.

Anyway I was in a crazy mood and teased him that I didn't know he could sing so high in which he replied that he had his tight shorts on LOL

Then I asked him if he, as being a Brit, liked jamiroquai. Anyway to make a long story short (and I don't know the exact details anymore - late, tired, blah, blah) he said that being a musician he liked the music very much but he was no fan or something. Then he said something (with a laugh) about Jay, that he had the little man's disease. Not knowing the expression he said that little or short men are often aggresive and they call that the little man's disease.

Is any of the Brit's here familiar with that term?

PS Are there any Superbike or MotoGP fans around? (besides Lillyjammer/Rachael). the go to this topic and give your view of the season(s) so far

in argentina we have something like that , i think that what he means is that as jay is short he is always triying to show that he is the best , and that beign short is not a diference from other people in fact he tries to show that he is better, so they (short people) some time are kind of rude and egocentric, arrogant. I mean this is something that people say about short people , it doesnt mean that is true. I didnt know that jay was short!!

Good Vibes!

It's a general stereotype... not something I'd say is a quintessentially English one (although God knows we've invented enough stereotypes for people!), just in general, a stereotype. Other similar ones involve people with red hair, Celts (I'm living proof of that one, I suppose!), Latinos (I can speak from experience there, too... Rolling Eyes) and many more...

I suppose just about everyone on earth can be stereotyped as being a bit psychotic, really. It's probably accurate, as well!

I know it as 'short man syndrome' meaning that if someone is short, they make up for it in bravado or toughness - so you don't have to be 6ft tall to be tough - like they are more aggressive because they don't have the height to back it up.

Anyway it doesn't matter if Jay is 'short' - I don't think he's short, he seems medium height to me.

My husband is 5ft5in (shorter than me) and I love him to bits, it doesn't matter the size of a person, just the quality of a person. I'd rather have a short guy that's a great person to be around, than a tall person who's arrogant.

In Sweden we say "Liten på jorden, stor i orden." Freely translated it means something like "tiny on earth, big with words".

It's essentially the same as "little man's disease/short man syndrome"... If someone feels inferior because of their height (or something else) it's not unusual that they try to compensate that by being cocky and possibly agressive.

That kind of behaviour mixed with alcohol or drugs like cocaine is very dangerous. You get that "take on the world" mentality and it's not very healthy to confront a handful of 6ft 11" muscular men if you're a scrawny 5 feeter with a alcohol/drug induced ego like the incredible Hulk. A friend of mine was like that... do I need to mention that he got his arse kicked properly quite a few times?

I never knew that it is so common. I don't recall an expression like that in Holland that's why it got me puzzled.

have fellow Dutchies ever heard anything like of anything like little men's disease/short man syndrome ?
