From the sydney Morning Herald:

Top Gear presenter 'walks'

September 23, 2006

British motoring show presenter Richard Hammond has got out of bed and walked after suffering brain injuries in a high-speed crash, co-host of Top Gear Jeremy Clarkson told The Sun newspaper on Saturday.

"In the wee small hours of Thursday night, just 30 hours after what is almost certainly the world's fastest-ever car crash, Richard Hammond suddenly sat up in bed opened his eyes and asked what had happened," wrote Clarkson in his Sun column.

"'You've been in a car accident'," I said. "'Was I driving badly?' he asked, before getting out of bed and walking shakily to the lavatory."

A Leeds General Infirmary hospital spokeswoman told Reuters that Hammond continues to "make good progress".

Hammond's wife Mindy also provided an upbeat assessment of her husband's medical condition.

"He's spoken and smiled. It's early days and what has happened hasn't really sunk in for him," she told The Daily Mirror newspaper.

Hammond, 36, was seriously injured on Wednesday when he crashed a jet-powered dragster as he accelerated towards 300 miles per hour (483kmh) in a feature being filmed for the BBC show.

He suffered what his doctors have called a significant brain injury as a result of the accident at an RAF airfield near York.

Although doctors remain concerned about his condition they have said they are "reasonably optimistic that he will make a good recovery".

The accident is being jointly investigated by police and the Health and Safety Executive.

Hammond had been filming at the Elvington airfield in what media reports said was an attempt to break the British land speed record of 300.3 miles per hour (483.18kph) when the accident happened.

A spokesman for the car's sponsor, auto accessory maker Thule, has said that although timers were in place to record Hammond's speed, it would not have qualified as an official record attempt.

I hope the Hamster will recover 100%. Top Gear wouldn't be the same without him!

In fact, it won't be anything at all without him - literally. The producer was in the UK press today saying that if Hammond doesn't recover sufficiently to go on presenting it, it'll be canned. He's only interested in doing it with Clarkson, May AND Hammond.

So really, get well soon Richard!

Well, that's being said as they know he seems to be recovering well. But I think that, if he had died, they'd probably cancelled the show for some time -say, a year- but then start again.

But the "ifs" don't matter. All that matters is that he gets back up on his feet and hasn't lost any brainfunctionality (or any functionality, for that matter). But honestly, I don't know because none of the docs have said that he will make a "full recovery", just a "good one". Whatever that means.

From the Sydney Morning Herald online:

BBC puts brakes on Top Gear after crash

September 26, 2006 - 10:42AM

The BBC is to postpone the new series of Top Gear until presenter Richard Hammond has recovered from the brain injuries he suffered in a high-speed crash.

The next series had been due to begin in the UK on October 8.

"We would not think of finalising plans for the next series without discussing it with everyone involved," the BBC said in a statement. "When it is suitable, the team will do this and we will announce a new transmission date."

Hammond, 36, was moved from a high dependency ward to a side-room on a general ward at Leeds General Infirmary on Saturday.

"He is continuing to do well," a hospital spokesman said.

Hammond was seriously injured on Wednesday when he crashed a jet-powered dragster as he accelerated towards 485kmh in a feature being filmed for the BBC show.

Top Gear producer Andy Wilman has threatened to quit if the BBC makes any attempt to tone down the program's emphasis on speed and extreme stunts.

"You either do the show you or you walk away," Wilman told The Observer newspaper on Sunday.

Hammond's co-host Jeremy Clarkson also rejected criticism of Top Gear's format.

"Next week I intend to be down on the track driving faster than ever," Clarkson told The Observer. "It's what we do."

So they're delaying it... surprise surprise. That shouldn't count as 'news', really...

Incidentally, all this stuff about safety... people need to calm down a little. The man had a crash at 300mph and LIVED! Sounds to me like they had some pretty thorough safety stuff going on!

Precisely Sam! And they are well aware of the risk - like Jeremy said, "It's what we do".

BBC to screen Hammond horror crash
Date: 07/10/2006

The 300mph crash in which Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond nearly died will be will shown on television.

BBC bosses are planning to screen a special report about the accident in which the jet-powered car spun off the track and flipped over several times.

The documentary will go ahead if the star agrees. But there are no plans to show the footage on the Top Gear show itself, which has now resumed filming two weeks after the accident.

The BBC show was put on hold when Hammond suffered serious injuries while driving the dragster.

But presenter Jeremy Clarkson was back in the driving seat yesterday, testdriving a Lotus Europa at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey.

A BBC spokeswoman said: "We remain committed to Top Gear and there was never any question of it being axed."

No transmission date has been set for the new series.

Hammond, 36, is said to be delighted the show is back on as he recovers from brain injuries sustained in the crash at Elvington airfield, near York.

Hammond is now in a hospital in Bristol. Doctors predict he will be "back to his old self" within six months.

The police and Health and Safety Executive are still investigating the crash.

Yes Azzie, he was in a hospital in Bristol last week (he lives about 40 mins or so up the motorway from here, near Cheltenham), and I believe he's been discharged or is due to be fairly soon. They've said it'll take maybe four or five months before he's back to his old self, but (whilst obviously they can't totally guarantee anything) he should be fine.

Amazing.
