non co-written songs
I made a list of all the songs jay written by himself (without even toby)

When You Gonna Learn
Whatever it is I Just Can't Stop
Space Cowboy
Travelling Without Moving
You Are My Love
Canned Heat
Black Capricorn Day
Supersonic
Where Do We Go From Here?
Main Vein
2001

I wonder if we can find something in common to all of them (exept being written by jay)

they have something in common...
The original songs (demo version?) of "When you gonna learn" and "Space Cowboy" are very funky and the text Jay sings has a weird connection to the instrumental; it's a strange mix.

Supersonic was the first track of Jamiroquai that was very diffirent. So is 20-0-1. Main vein has the same audio effect like Supersonic in the middle part, where the song's basses dissapear and it all sounds like bad quality.

I don't know why, but you notice that TWM is a "Jay" song. maybe because of the beginning?

i think toby helps to retain that jamiroquai vibe... jay has a tendency of going way off course with all his 'experiments'! Razz

Exactly, davina!
...but I must say, that I really like those "experiments" for example "Supersonic" and "20-0-1". Although it took a while, until I really liked them. But meanwhile the songs of DIDGIN's list rank with my favourite ones!

Genius Experiments
When I bought Synkronized after a while I liked all songs except Supersonic.
Then I saw the video and now it's my favorit song! But not because of the video, it's because after I saw the video I could see how the different instruments were set and I think after that I gave the song more attention than before.

a lot of those songs are about personal emotions of J or things from j's past like: when you gonna learn, space cowboy, black capricorn day, canned heat or main vein.

2001 and supersonic are definitly expirimental, and I think that so is TWM the song but it's also about an emotion.

well...
do u know was written by J and produced by m-beat, so that's mean j did the lyrics and mbeat - the music

I was always suprised about the fact that J wrote instrumentals even before they started program the songs. I was even more suprised to find out an official released track that wasn't written nor co written by j: space clav. it reads: "written by zender/smith" or maybe it was "smith/zender"

they were never signed with sony so I don't understand sony for releasing it even as a b-side for "half the man"

strange

Hello there,

(Sorry, I had to bring this topic up, is interesting Laughing )

Yes, I think 'Bullet' was written by Jay and 'Space Clav' by Zender/Smith. Anyway, as you know, 'Bullet' I think is awesome.. but I can't understand how Jay thinks on every little part of it! I mean, is not something you can easily imagine, and the song is just perfect. Every instrument is played with such precition.

And for replying to the topic, 'Twenty Zero One' and 'Supersonic' are the experimentals of each album. Jay seems to be curious about that and how people respond. I think is a good move. And very 'Jayish'.

'Now we got emergency...'

So there we have it: Jay has written alone the majority of the best jamiroquai songs. well, he doesn´t seems to need anyone!

by the way:
What do you think about that story where Jay sang the bass line to Stu and all he did was just "copying" it in?
