I need your opinions on Wallis' departure (Read inside)...
I was listening to Journey to Arnhemland today on the trip to the hospital, cause I had to remove the plaster from my leg because of a deep wound that happened two weeks ago. It was my foot that was wounded, but it's okay anyhow.

I was listening to the tune (From Montreux '95), and I started thinking, "Wallis left the band after Synk was recorded - for unknown reasons...". Sure, it could've been just that he wanted to spend more time with his relatives, just like Toby, but I don't think that's the case. You see, the only song with the Didj on Synk was Supersonic, so it was logical that there should've been more songs with the didj on Synk.

That made me think if the Didj was cut out of some songs during production. I'm sure that Toby, Jay, or whoever was the producer would kick the Didj out just like that. Jay wanted to keep the experi-funk elements such as the Didgeridoo in his music, so I think that Wallis was fired by a third party, which is not in the band.

I think he was fired by Sony. I mean, AFO is so much of a proof, such a sharp turn in style and genre, it's just impossible to happen in those two years between the two albums, IMO, and if it happens, it happens rarely, and in bands unlike Jamiroquai.

Having that all in mind, I do think that Wallis didn't leave the band solely by himself, or was fired by Jay. $ony had their fingers deep in this one, that's for sure.

i really odn't know the reasons, but we know that sony don't wanted more instrumental songs, or didgeridoo in the albums.

anyway, a coming back for the greatest hits tour should be the best thing he/them could do.
imagine the new live band with backing vocals, brass, dj and didgeridoo 8of course not all them at the same time, or it will be a filarmonic orchestra Laughing

Why? There's only one song with didge on ROTSC, and only really one didge song on EOPE (plus a very small bit of it on WYGL)...

I remember reading a comment from one or two of the band members at the time (I can't remember which ones, and I can't remember where I read it, sorry), saying that Wallis was pretty lucky to even get Supersonic included on Synkronized because he hadn't been turning up to recording sessions or putting in much work while the album was recorded. He was getting more and more unreliable, apparently.

I love the guy and he inspired me to start playing didge myself (badly - that was 7 years ago and I still can't circular breathe! Maybe if I did some practice now and then...) but if that's true, it'd explain it...

Sony couldn't have fired him or anyone else from the band, except Jay. Because it was Jay who signed the contract with Sony and Jay in his turn hires in the rest of the band. So if anyone 'fired' him, it would've been Jay himself.

But I think the reason for Wallis' absence is simply the fact that the music has changed to somewhat of a electro-funk/pop/rock mix with less brass, and a didge wouldn't have fitted in with that very well.

Besides that, his input wasn't that great actually. Don't get me wrong, I really like the songs that include his playing, but compared to the contribution of the other artists, Wallis' input is rather small. Perhaps that meant that gradually, he was no longer seen as a part of the core-band, but as an 'extra' instead.

I think you can actually hear the Didj in SIT in the background.

Well, I didn't know that... Say... Do you know why he became so unreliable? It has to have a cause... Still, it's shobiz, so it might be just that... People get under pressure there easily when it's something big. Still, his unreliability doesn't mean he didn't contribute to the band. In my opinion, he has contributed greatly to the band, vibe-wise, and I really appreciate his contributions, no matter how large or small.

Yeh, I think he has pulled me into the Didj madness, too. Can I construct a one by myself somehow? I've been wondering that for months.

it's so easy to do a didgeridoo.
i have 2 real didges and 3 make by myslef.
you only need a pvc pipe 8you can find them if sometihng is under contruction ( Wink ) and then buy some bee "virgin" wax, the wax will be not moldeable at the beggining but if you give it some hot with your hands for quite long time it become very moldeable, when you got it, just put it around one of the sides of the pipe and give the centre hole a kind of mouth size.
there you got a didgeridoo wich sound incredible good.
depending of the pipe sizes the sound will be different

btw, theres no didgeridoo on SIT

Thanks for the info. I think I know who I'll get the beeswax from, but I'm still puzzling 'bout the PVC pipe...

But there is some sound in the background that sounds like it... To me, at least...

If you want to buy one, direct from Australia, that's actually made the traditional way by Australian Aborigines (help out a persecuted culture at the same time!), I can highly recommend www.didgshop.com. There are also LOADS of links down the sides and along the top about Aboriginal culture, didgeridoo history, how to play, how to circular breathe, etc. etc. etc... it really is the most informative didge site I've come across. And somewhere in there is a guide to making your own.

This is where I got mine from (picture to follow soon) in 1999, and I've been wishing ever since that I could justify ordering another - they're not cheap, but some of them are SOOOOOOOO beautiful...

he didn't leave the band!
he was kicked out for the AFO Tour...
Sony told Jay the band didn't need a DJ, a brass section and Didgeridoo!

on the other side, that was another step to the jamiroquai-musically-descending story! haha actually they're a big hit... Haha!

how do you know that?
SONY probably didn't want to include didgeridoo songs in the albums, but the band is jay's thing. SONY can't say who want in the band to playing live.

It's $ONY not Sony. Learn to spell. Wink

I agree, too. $ony should have no leash on the creative freedom of the band. This is disgusting. A disgusting public secret.

That's sad. If you still have that article, can you scan it or post it please, I'd love to read the whole thing on Wallis's departure.

Or just let me know where you read it and I'll look it up because around that time I fell off the Jamiroquai radar for awhile!

Thanks Ed!

JAY SOLD THE BAND to them! and now the band is part of COLUMBIA!, i don't want it, take it! that's something someone who works at columbia venezuela explained me! maybe i got it wrong, but that's what i understand!
