I'm loving all the pictures, reviews and good vibes you guys are communicating with us about the gig! Even those that didn't get in - looks like you still had fun.

Inaki - I hope your meeting with Sola was phenomenal and he enjoyed the shaker you made for him! Aren't you happy you went now?

Jonas - your edited and remastered recording is great - so clear and enjoyable. Thank you so much for taking the time out to do that for us!

Those cookies are dope Meike!

Thanks everyone for sharing this all, and sunshine FRA - you had such an incredible birthday - and you're never, ever, ever coming down.... Smile

Have a wonderful weekend!

xo

Hi all!

Here it is, my review of Wednesday 25th October 2006.

4:00 CET
Going out of bed, having a shower and jumping in the car. On my way I'm picking up René who will travel with me to the airport where we'll meet Ester (Ezzi) and Natalie (Freaky).

8:30 CET
No delays so far, so we can check in and pass the passport-control. Our aircraft will leave at 9:25 CET.

9:00 CET
Only 13 hours to go to the start of the gig! The countdown has begun!

9:25 CET
We are still inside the building waiting to go on board. But 'our' plane isn't able to land due to heavy fog! Don't worry, we aren't in a hurry at all. We just have to wait. I'm prospecting: the air will be cleared in one hour, so we have to be patient.

10:00 CET
There is news! The flight might me cancelled. I'm getting it on my nerves now. Closer to cry than laugh at the moment. Imagine if it will be cancelled then there will be some big personal drama's...

10:30 CET
We can be happy again. The fog has disappeared and the plane is landing right now. In a few minutes we'll go on board and be on our way to London! Finally.

11:15 GMT
Landed and had a safe flight. On our way to London city now. Checking in in our hostels and a few hours later Ester, Natalie, René, Meike (who we've met at Liverpool Street Station) and me are heading to Camden, where it all will happen.

16:00 GMT
Checking the Jazz Café. Big trucks in front of it, lots of cables through the window, etc. We're deciding to have a cup of coffee before we'll make a queue. Getting excited already.

17:00 GMT
In front of the Jazz Café the Jamily is growing! We are with a lot, some with, some without tickets. Then we hear a sound through the glass door and we can see and hear the soundcheck! With brass! Real brass! And the band has noticed us outside, standing in the rain. Rob is waving. Matt is smiling. Jay is waving aswell.

18:00 GMT
A serious queue is formed now. And it's growing quite quick. Unfortunately it was raining from time to time, but now it's dry. Doors will open at half past 7. Waiting again.

19:30 GMT
Doors opening. They're checking the names carefully and people are going inside one by one. Meike first, then me and then de door closes again. (Lucky we were in front of the queue Wink )
We can walk to the stage, we are so close! We can touch his microphone. It is very small and all the equipments are packed on this small area. How will Jay be able to dance on this square metre space he will have? Rolling Eyes
And we can read the setlist. High Times, Space Cowboy, If I Like It I Do It, Emergency On Planet Earth, Seven Days In Sunny June, Canned Heat, Use The Force, Travelling Without Moving, Time Won't Wait, Runaway.
And now we have to wait another 90 minutes...

20:50 GMT
Band, except Jay, comes on stage! So close, the venue is packed with excited people, all wanting to dance, boogie, sing, etc.

21:00 GMT
The gig starts! From this moment I'm only enjoying the music of Jamiroquai and the stand up comedy of Jay. A perfect mix. The band is on top form and they are enjoying themselves a lot. And they are definitely not going to play an one hour set, but longer! So many impressions are coming to me and there are so many emotions in my head and body, I can't remember it all, but I'll try to write down my feelings and highlights. (Glad the recording can help me out sometimes Wink )

High Times
Highlight number 1. Goosebumps for the first time. The band, the brass, the background singers. Love it when they are all doing their thing together. I've missed the brass in this track so much and now it is back.

Space Cowboy
Highlight number 2. How tight can a band play? Listen to this!
Same as with High Times I've missed the brass in this track in the precious concerts. Goosebumps for the second time.

If I Like It, I Do It
Highlight number 3. Lovely extended version. The band really jammed here. Back to the oldschool! And hear Paul doing an excellent job. Goosebumps for the third time.

Emergency On Planet Earth
Standard version I think. Liked it, but prefer to got another tune instead.

Seven Days In Sunny June
Standard version until the brass comes in. Great to hear. Good vibes in the small venue.

Black Capricorn Day
Thanks to Victor Jay remembered a funny story and decided to play this track which wasn't on the original setlist. The brass-players really looked surprised while it would've been enjoyable if they could play along with this one. Black Capricorn Day with sax, trumpet and trombone still is the best. So without, this one became quite standard, reminds me of all the Dynamite-tour gigs.

Canned Heat
Highlight number 4 and together with IILIIDI the highlight of the show. Extended version which never seemed to end. Derrick looking at Jay all the time if he can end the track, but Jay signing every time the band should go on. Goosebumps again.

Use The Force
Great version! A mixture between Jamiroquai old and new style. Rock meets jazz-funk. Excellent duel between the brass on the one hand and Matt and Rob on the other side. (What a band!)

Travelling Without Moving
Highlight number 5. Unfortunately we couldn't hear the flute from where we stood, happy we can hear it on the recording at least. Great version, maybe they could've extended it a little bit. Again an excellent example of old meeting new. And Paul is awesome again... Goosebumps!

Runaway
Short version. Added brass is lovely. Funny to hear it without bass. I didn't even notice in the beginning. In my opinion the little play between Paul and Jay is the prove of the good atmosphere in the band. Well solved.

Virtual Insanity
Now we see the difference between Paul and Nick! This version is so much funkier than the versions we new from the previous eras. I really like it, but I think they played it a little to fast so Jay had some problems with breathing and reaching the high notes. Pay attention to the last minute. It is funkier than ever.

22:30 GMT
End of the gig. Ninety minutes of good vibes. We've been part of Jamiroquai's best concert since a long long time. This was, as mentioned before, the gig.

Paul: For me he's the Man of the Concert. He made the gig. We can forget Stu now!
Matt: Still growing and getting better. Love his playing and the jazz he's bringing.
Rob: There is someone standing there! A man with personality. He's not doing his thing, but even more. He is adding a lot! Great job done.
Sola: Good as always. What would it be without him?
Derrick: In the bigger concerts I couldn't see him very well because he was too far away, now I looked straight in to face. He was very concentrated and played very very good. He was really jamming. His level was very close to Paul and Sola. Jamiroquai has to be proud of such a rythm section.
The girls: Great, great, great. They are even better in combination with the brass section.
Brass section: I've missed it. And now it's back I hope they'll keep it forever. It was the missing link the last tours. You could see well that Jay arranged some parts of the brass and that he was enjoying it very much.
Jay: Good, clear voice. Was in a very good mood, singer and stand up comedian in one person. Very cool to see him so close doing his thing, moving, dancing, jumping, interacting with the band, enjoying the music, etc.

As you can see, this gig was for me one big highlight. I really wouldn't have missed it. And now having the recording is making it even more special. Can't stop listening to it.

23:00 GMT
We have to leave the café. Sad BBC wants to clean up the mess.
Before leaving the venue there's a guy from the BBC interviewing guests. He asked me some questions and I told him what I thought of the gig. In all my excitement I can't remember exactly what I said, but it was positive for sure Wink I don't know if I was live on the radio or if it is broadcasted or that it even hasn't been aired at all.

We waited for a long time outside, had a drink in the pub and after that we headed back to our hotels for a well deserved sleep. We were tired Shocked !!

I want to thank everyone who made this great night possible, especially Meike for taking me with her. It was my best concert ever until now and all my (high) expectations has become truth. Happiest man ever here Very Happy

1:30 GMT
Falling asleep.

This was my review. Thanks for reading, hope you liked it!

Jeroen.

Meike thank you for taking your precious time in letting us know all about our favorite band! Feels so good to be part of this Jamily with such a nice mum, to say the least good kissing

Great review Jeroen!! Very Happy

Loved this kind of play by play review! almost like all of us were there excellent! Wink

I agree with everything you said, Paul's the man and it shows, a funky block and is way too seasoned! What a difference the brass section made, I would've liked tohear TWW with it... but They didn't play it

But I won't forget Stu Laughing

Thanks! I'm happy you liked it. I'll probably be working on a cover and a 2 CD set of chopped clips with separate tracks in a not so distant future. Wink

the complete odyssey!
well, it's time to start.....this is my story Very Happy

i arrived central london on 24th at around 7 pm, it was dark already so i went to the hostel to check it out, then walked around a bit, inform about my phone not running to my family and some on the net-jamily and went again to the hostel, i was just feeling alone, but happy, i couldn't wait to meet the jamily the day after.
so i stayed in my bed on this 12 beds room and started sleeping while listening to emergency on planet earth.... Smile
later anothe room user came to sleep and....what a beast! he should have the world record on noisy snoring and deep sleep! he had all the rest ofthe room awake all night, we tried everything but he just didn't stop for a second, we didn't had sleep at all...but we had great fun!
here you can see one of the other room users hiting him hahahaha!

i just put my headphones and listened to the return of the space cowboy....the man continued snoring...i sang mr moon and the other people awake enjoyed more than the other sounds around...
Laughing

next morning i went to meet the itaian crew...i was waiting for them an hour and half but didn't appear....so i wnet again to jamirotalk.net to ask for help (thanks sandra!) and i checked my email....i had one for sola telling me he had a ticket for me and to reply him to confirm before 12 pm.....it was 12:13!!!!!! i quicly replyed him and i went just mad, thinking....i have this opportunity now..can't fuck it by 13 mins!!!, i checked the adress of the hotel and went there (thanks jonas!).
arrived to the hotel and the man there told me that the italians were there but went to camdem and told him to be back at evening.....so....i walked to camded and have a tour there Very Happy
later i went searching for the jazz cafe, and just when i get there matt appeared with his wife, i brevely talked to him and took a pic with him

i ate and went back again to the hotel....when i was there the man on the hotel told me "they're been again...but i think they're out again" he told me wich my room was and i went there to knock the door.....it was weird because i was hearing music inside the room, "notihng else matters" by metallica was sounding there but nothing but that music came from inside the room....i was quite confused Confused , but, suddenly a door in the other side of the corridor opened, and saw janices surpirse face, coming out and coming back in so quiclky! it had a great feeling there!
all the jamily went out from the room and we all huged, it was just fantastic. janice, janluka, vere, lee and alessia there!!!!
janlu took me to our room and we talked some, he was so kind with me and make me feel like being with an old friend Very Happy he showed me a little present and worked it for me while i was going to take a shower. back from there me, janlu, vere and alessia shared the little present hehehe
then we prepared for the gig, i had two hats so i gave the other one to janlu
Very Happy

that's when i realized i forgot sola's shaker in the hotel!!!!! so i went fast to the hotel to get it and came again to meet all the people in front of the cafe. went back to the cafe queue (where there was no need of a queue at all as we were the only ones there hehehe)
later derrick came out to speak a little with us, he is so kind, just like any other of the jamily, he signed our covers and took photos with us.
i've got of his albums with jamiroquai signed by him

then...we smell like someone was smoking some cheeba..but there was nobody around with a joint....a bit later jay's manager came out and sais that jay was looking at us from the window of the jazz cafe, and spotted janlu's vinils and wanted to sign them, so we realized he should been smoking a phat joint just above us Laughing
janlu gave his vynils, and i added janice's EOPE album cover and my when you gonna learn acid jazz release cover to him to sign them, we got a really cool views some minutes later when we got our stuff back (i'm sure janlu will let you see his collection's new look soon Wink )
here's my new treasure, jay did a great dedicatory there! Laughing he can be sure i definitely won't lose this one! (neither sell it, althoug it haves very high value now!)

after some more waiting we went in the cafe...it was incredible.....a very very tiny place, there wasn't space for all the band in the stage, we were really really close and everything seemed like it would be really magical...

so, everything was ready...the bbc guy presented the band and them all (except jay) went to the stage, i thought there will be only sax and flute player...but surprisingly i saw also a trumpet and a trombone player....i couldn't be more happier, sadly the stage was that small that paul stayed behind the girls and was just in front of me but quite hidden, and same for the brass section, they were behind matt and sola, so i hardly could seen them. i noticed the trumpet player was the same as some gigs on 93 (e.g. cita and firenze) but now that i seen the names i doubt because i don't think that was the name of the guy in the past (maybe he have changed it? ahaha)
it was great because the music from the before dj was playing yet, some cool funky music like johnny hammond, earth wind and fire, cheryl linn etc, and the band started jamming with the sounding music. derrick, sola, matt, rob and paul had some fun jamming to this music, so we had too.
those are the only pics of the gig i took, as i knew all of them would be moved becaus enot using flash, it's the bands jamming:

jay came to the stage and ......the thing started! i couldn't believe!
jay started singing the real beggining of high times (first time ever as someone also pointed out), he did not sang that really good hehehe, but after the first notes he went good and did perfectly. high times haves again that sound, the brass was missing so much in this and now is back, we can't ask more! Very Happy great sax solo, great drums, percussion, guitar, backing vocals, bass, keys....just unveliable. that first matts solo was just insane!!!! but how cool!!!
the talking between the tracks of jay in every song was just great, so funny and so much good vibes there.
space cowboy then.....what a track! the best version of this in ages, i was waiting for the brass of 96/97/99 gigs and there was!!!!, everyone sounded perfectly in this one too, obiously they all need to play them more time, brass section is clearly still in need of knowing good the songs, and some other error happened in most of the songs, but they jammed so well in all them. i was enjoying it at maximum ,and when jay started with the breath thing we all went mad.
if i like it i do it what to say...the best live version ever of this one, just had the vibe of this last tour versions, but the brass did it even better...it was just perfect. funny when jay missed the first lyric line, and did a gesture of denying while singing ahaha. i believe this will sound even better (as lot others) when the tour is started and they have time to rehearse and know the tunes alright. but for me was just perfect. rob's guitar was so funky, matts keys solas perc, derricks drums, girls voices, pauls bass....well, you all can (fortunatelly) hear it and you know what i say!
emergency on planet earth
had both the new sound and the old vibe in it, i think i will mention pauls job in each song..but it really worhts is...he's just a master, his solo is just as good as old stus ones (and no one can't deny me this..ed..i said nobody!Laughing ) , i love his playing! horns arrangements again for this one and the classic sound, sola's bells are perfect too Smile
seven days in sunny june....for me also the best version ever, it was trippy and the new horns arrangements fits just perfect.
victor shoed jay the tytd 12" spanidh promo and we had so much fun with his story of the bootleg (he later noticed it wasnt a bootleg) but all this make the first setlist surprise on the night and they went with black capricorn day. the brass section obiously didn't know the song so they were missed, also the new backing singer was having a bad one but the song sounded really great after all. all them jammed to the song awesomely. (btw, i was doing the brass parts myself Laughing Laughing )
after some speaking, jay started to talk about "the doll", i really didn't understood at all, but he looked at me shaking my t-sirt because of the hot and he aske me "seen the doll?" i repied "yeah" but i really didn't know what about was all that hahaha, i tihnk he said "pisses itslef" after that??? after that we had the best canned heat version ever maybe. hear again that pauls solo in the new part...it is a master or what??? i though in mr pastorius with that! very very very nice funky new part there! amazing and what about the sax!!!!! and the percussion break Shocked , i just missed the final part, 99 like ending should sound better
use the force this track its been always a perfect live tune, now with last tours arrangements plus the old horns is just perfect live tune, i only missed the little trumpet solo behind "i can go eagle high" but i guess it's gonna be played in next gigs Wink. the new breack in the beggining are great also. this is always the song for derrick and sola, and they did it again, showed theyre the best rythm partners in the world!
(i won't mention again paul....well yes! listen to him!! Laughing )
travelling without moving as always a top track, the flute in this track live its been always one of the best arrangements in jamis live story and this time was also like that, also the brass part is amazing, extrange that they only did the chorus once in all the track long...and even jay didn't remember that time and he misses the part and was to sign the "fast part" again.
when jay talked about jamming and derrick did the beggining of jamming by bob marley was like.....please play it, all of us though on it, and jay knew it, he denyed it us in a funny way Very Happy
the concert was ready to finish....the runaway without bass was so funny also, definitely that song can't sound without bass hahaha.
the right version was just amazing! the song really sound live and with horns, it looses that artificial and popy sound and gives us the funky we deserve Wink and the "back to old school" phrase sounds truthfull as never.
the encore song....virtual insanity, this been my 5th jami concert and i still didn't listened to it and this was the time! i was so excited, it sounded so good, also with new brass arrangements and the middle instrumental part. it was just better than my dreamed concert, just a perfect night, perfect place, perfect atmosphere....PERFECT!
it was over. after some time and the continious shouting of the man of the jazz cafe we went out.
someone said "inaki!" and it was richard (darthbuzz) he was so happy of meeting me, so i was, we connected a lot, he's a very very nice guy, it was also great to meet claire, it was a real real pleasure to be with you. we waited for the bandmembers to go out, i was specially waiting for sola and he came after quite so many time. i said hi to him and he smiled, opened the eyes so much and shouted: "INAKIII" i was so happy, we huged and i thanked him for the invitation, after a short talking about keeping in contact and all the stuff i gave him the present, he laughed and thanked me and he went, it was just PERFECT, theres no other word for the whole thing.
we went to a pub near the cafe to take a beer, it was a surpirse for me to see the matt and rob, how great was that? i drink a beer and went back to saty with the girls who still were wating for jay (vere, fran and ale) and just when we were there jay went out, but the bunch of paparazzis surrounding him (with all that monkey thing) make him to go to the car without being with any of us.
then we had another beer and went to the hotel. i was dying for some party, some danicng and some drinking (and some smoking!!!) but it couldn't be....maybe at other time (sure!)
richard and lee (sorry lee Laughing )

Thanks Jeroen for the great review. There is not so much to add now from my side, because we have been together most of the time and I have the same feelings about the songs you descibed. 2goodvibes

So, no detailed review from me this time, but some personals highlights (ups and downs) instead:

5thumbsup Meeting the dutch crew (Jeroen, ezzi, Rene and Natalie) finally at Liverpool Street, after a few hours of waiting and hoping that their flight would not been canceled. Imagine that!! Shocked

5thumbsup Meeting the Jamily in front of the Jazz Café. Great to meet the italian crew again with Vere (first time we have met Very Happy) and Inaki who is in a hurry to get back to the internet café and check if his deal with Sola will work out! Chances are good that he will be on the guestlist in the end! Exciting!!!

5thumbsdown A call from bear: he might have made it back to London because his business-meeting in Germany was finished earlier, but after a while he sent me a message that he didn't get a flight which would have arrived just in time. 2indifferent so, no Mouse & Bear reunion this time.
Crying or Very sad

5thumbsup Yeah, Inaki is back: he is on the guestlist!!! Happiness!!! smoke'n'jump

5thumbsup Hearing the soundcheck, realizing that there is a real brass section 7saxophone 7saxophone 7saxophone as we hoped but didn't really expected to happen! This made my day, really. Seeing and hearing the band through the glass door was a great warm up in the rain.

5thumbsup The security guy in front of the doors was brilliant. He was crazy about my cookies... 5cookie 2biting ... Laughing

5thumbsup Derrick comes out after the soundcheck, shaking hands, saying hello, taking some pics... and then he is giving Vere a wristband: the entry for the gig!! Tears are falling.. very emotional moment.

5thumbsup Someone close to the band/Jay comes out and picks up Janluka's and Inakis cd covers and vinyls they have in a plastic bag. If I understood it right Jay has watched silently from upstairs, looking out of the window and wanted to have that stuff in order to sign it for the guys!
After 10 minutes the guy comes back and all the stuff is signed! good
Crazyness!!

5thumbsdown Phoning my family at home to say goodnight to my boys... but my little one is crying so much. He is missing me... Crying or Very sad ... I feel down but after a while they are calling me back and thanks to my hubby he has calmed down and said good night without tears this time. Smile

5thumbsup The guestlist is arriving at the door. Finally. We can get in and Jeroen and me are the first to enter! Wow, the stage is even smaller than in Ealing. Shocked Very intimate feeling.

5thumbsup The concert starts and I know from the first brass tunes that this is going to be an amazing gig! Brass brass brass...and the flute.. oh my god!!! I am thinking a lot of Jonas and Sandra in those moments!

5thumbsdown Looking back from time to time to search for the guys without ticket.. will they make it into the venue anyways? ... no, doesn't look good. Too bad. Crying or Very sad

5thumbsup The Jamily in the front rows (the first row was about 10 people only! So small!) is partying so much. At some point Jay is making
2shhh because we were singing along so loud! Laughing

5thumbsup Jay's mood is brilliant. You can see that both, Jay and the band are enjoying it a lot to perform in this intimate venue.

5thumbsup I love seeing the interaction between Jay and the bandmembers. They look so concentrated, waiting for Jay's little signs, when a break will come, when they have to build up a climax or to do a solo... and so on. Great band!

5thumbsdown We cannot hear the flute in Travelling. The guy is playing but we cannot hear it. Confused Good that it is on the recording, though!

5thumbsdown Black Capricorn Day without brass... I guess they didn't rehearse that one as Jay has picked this track spontaneously. Hm... Rolling Eyes

5thumbsup My favourite songs are: Canned Heat, If I Like It, Travelling, High Times (oh how I had missed the brass so much!!)... but the complete setlist was great, nearly orgasmic... the only thing that could have topped this would have been Blow your mind for me.. or Stillness.. imagine that one with the flute!!! Shocked

5thumbsup Although they have performed more than one hour and the printed setlist on the ground is finished, they come back on stage one more time to present us an incredible Virtual Insanity! Very funky! good

5thumbsdown We are thrown out very soon after the gig is finished. So not really the chance to meet the guys inside.

I have a few words with Rob, asking him to bring Sola downstairs because Inaki wants to give him the present.

5thumbsdown Going outside, meeting the Jamily members outside who didn't make it into the venue. I am so sorry that you had to stand in the cold and couldn't be close to us during the gig.

5thumbsup After a long time of waiting outside, the bandmembers are coming out, leaving the venue. And finally Sola appeares. Inaki can accomplish his mission! good

5thumbsup Going to the pub a few hundred meters away from Jazz Café where we meet Rob and Matt again. Changing a few sentences with Rob. Very Happy Nice as always.

Sandra and Bear, I have send him your greetings. About Sandra he said: Oh yes, I like her, she is so nice! She likes what I am playing.. everyone else hates me.. lol...

naaaah, Rob, we love you!!! Keep it up!! 7electricguitar 5heartbeat

He also said that he is getting loads and loads of messages through myspace. He appologizes that he cannot answer all of them immediately... he is trying, but well, he is really getting a lot. He is doing his best. Wink

5thumbsdown Saying goodbye to the Jamily is hard as always... Sad .. but no tears this time. Wink ... Thanks everyone for making this day so special again. Without Jamily it would only be half the pleasure!
2grouphug

Special greetings to David and Sharon 2wave - sorry again for not saying goodbye.. 2pessimist .. we came to late to the pub.

Richard!! Nice surprise that you were there as well! A shame that you didn't make it inside this time... so sorry. Sad

Claire and Lee, thanks for your company the day after! Very Happy

Italian crew, sorry we didn't make it to meet the day after. Was great to celebrate your birthday this way, Fra! 3party

All in all, an unforgettable night, fantastic gig, amazing intimate atmosphere.. this will be very very hard to top.

Thanks everyone! Very Happy I will never forget this night! 2cloud9

Excellent reviews, stories and photos. I love reading them... I almost feel like I was there.

Meike... I hope Rob finds time to read all our comments here. With this gig I think he won the hearts of many disbelievers. I've never doubted his musical skills, just his style... and now I've changed my mind. His performance was top notch... perfect! I'm 100% happy with the versions they played... and I'm known to be a bit hard to please. Wink
