No you couldn't, because loads of people have already done that. My best friend's flatmate is in one such band, playing metal, and they've actually been signed. He was in the rather bizarre situation, over the summer, of having to travel to Germany to record and album and then go on tour with a load of people he'd never actually met before, never mind played together with live...

For those musicians that have My Space and want to sell their music. Not sure of the particulars, but figure you can read into it if interested:

From Record of the Day:

Not just MySpace - indiestore’s plug-in enables artists to sell their music through any social networking site, reaching new audiences

London, 29th November 06: indiestore.com, the global online service from 7 Digital that helps independent and unsigned artists sell their music direct on the web, earn up to 80% of the sale proceeds and secure positions in the official download charts, today announces a plug-in that lets users sell through their MySpace profile, as well as through other social networking sites.

The plug-in adds an indiestore Flash Player to the users home page or profile, which lists all the tracks that the artist has on their indiestore. Visitors can listen to the tracks using the Player and if they are interested in purchasing a track, simply click ‘buy’ and be taken to the bands checkout.

MySpace is due to launch a tool for bands to sell tracks via their profile in the UK next year, however, the indiestore Flash Player means that there is no need to wait - you can start making money from your music straight away.

Pimp My Page

The Flash Player is easy to add - users simply log in to their indiestore manager, copy the html code and paste it into their profile page. When the html code is added, the Player appears as a 10 by 10cm box.

For indiestore artists, the plug-in means that they can easily add extra points of sale to any website where they have built up a fan base. Temposhark has been trialling the new service and has already seen an upturn in sales:

Rob Diament, lead singer in Temposhark explains, “We are delighted with the indiestore Flash Player on our MySpace page as it has helped increase interest in our music, both in the number of plays of our songs as well as helping increase the number of downloads sold. It really makes it easy for our fans.”

About indiestore.com

Since the launch of indiestore.com more than 4,000 bands from 79 countries have signed up and are selling their own music directly. Unlike its competitors, indiestore.com enables unsigned artists and independent labels to sell tracks and albums in multiple currencies and up to MP3, WMA and AAC 192kbps high-quality formats.

The basic indiestore.com service is free to use and lets artists upload four tracks, unlimited photos and a calendar of upcoming events. In addition, artists can keep in touch with their fans via a blog on their store page.

indiestore Pro, which costs £75 a year, allows artists to upload and sell up to 20 tracks from their own download store, and following a new addition to the service, sell tracks bundled together as an album or EP. indiestore.com offers artists the most favourable terms in the industry, allowing them to keep up to 80% of the sale proceeds.

I play the guitar and the bass. I started on the bass because of Stu, but I wouldn't say he's my idol. He did definately influence me though.

Also, I've produced a bit of music using mainly the computer, for some study-projects. If you would like to hear them, go to my website www.robwienk.com and then to the audio & music section. The rest of the site might be worth a look as well Wink

WOW Shocked a talented man indeed.
I have a few musicians in my family, personally, I feel that it makes it easier. I was introduced to music at a young age and have always enjoyed it. If you can play an instrument and know a bit of theory I think it also makes it much easier to learn another instrument, especially if they are related by their respective "theories". (eg guitar/bass or violin/viola/cello or piano/keyboards/organ).

funky junkie your stuff sounds pretty cool. what software do you use?? I use Reason 3.0, Pro Tools, Cubase SX and various other VST bits and pieces. I would highly recommend Reason, if you don't have it already, it's brilliant. If you need more info give me a holler. Cool

For the stuff you can hear at my website, I used FL Studio, Wavelab and a lot of VST plugins, as well as live input from my bass, guitar, and some samples.
I find Reason is a good software tool that you can use in all kinds of ways, however I never got used to working with it. Plus I didnt need it.
I still have to give Cubase a try, but currently I'm not doing much with audio software...maybe in the future. Thanks for the tip though!
