Johnny hammond/jamiroquai
i think this is where it should be posted
if you have the album: late night tales
then you know that one of the artist jay picks is johnny hammond smith
if this influenced him wass influenced by
the track los conquitadores chocolates
because the chorus on this track seems to be the
inspirational groundwork for WHEN YOU GONNA LEARN

After some long long years the subject is back to the tracks. The old opnion of Johnny Hammond.
For me, it as some coincidencies with that track, but i'm sure it's pure casuality... _________________

I don't think it's a coincidence... I wouldn't say that Jay stole the chord progression, but he borrowed it. It's an homage to a hero (read Johnny "Hammond" Smith). Credit given where credit's due as well... _________________ Old school forever! |

Thanks for that track, I like it a lot. And yes, the chorus does have some chord-progression similarities with WYGL. |

Bringin this topic to live, in the bootleg TYTD/Live 1993 the 3th track Revolution 1993 minute 3:55 he said AH ! LOS CONQUISTADORES, i think it's clear the influence of Johnny "Hammond" Smith on him at least on that era |

Not just that, but Los Conquistadores Chocolates, WYGL, AND the Cante Hondo mix of WYGL have almost the same chord progression... Could it be that WYGL first started off as cover song? |

Well... I consider it a homage to Johnny Hammond Smith. A nod to someone who deserved it. The chorus was borrowed and changed a bit for WYGL. If you listen to the intro to Canned Heat you may recognise the verse from Los Conquistadores Chocolates too.
But there are some other songs worth discussing too. For example, parts of the Cosmic Girl chord progression reminds me of Super Strut by Eumir Deodato.
And Runaway... listen carefully to the bass line in Running Away by Roy Ayers.
It's inevitable. There are only so many chords and variations you know. Besides... songs end up sounding like other songs by mistake too. I've written songs and discovered afterwards that it sounds like something I hadn't even heard when writing the song in question. Coincidences happen. And sometimes musicians borrow from their heros intentionally. Where the line between homage and rip off goes is up to the listener to decide I guess. _________________ Old school forever! |

Don't forget 'Samurai' by Djavan & Stevie Wonder (harmonica).. some of Virtual Insanity is borrowed from that track. |
