Hello there,
Mm... is a difficult one, but here I go (not in order, just the way they come to my mind):
1- "Synkronized" by Jamiroquai (and then all the others)
2- "Surrender" by The Chemical Brothers
3- "I Am"/"Raise" by Earth, Wind & Fire
4- "Trunk Funk: The Best Of..." by The Brand New Heavies
5- "Fly or Die" by N.E.R.D.
6- "Pyramid" by Alan Parsons Project
7- "Journey Through The Secret Life Of Plants" by Stevie Wonder
8- "Epiphany: The Best Of..." by Chaka Khan
9- "SueñoStereo" by Soda Stereo
10- "Simply Red Greatest Hits" by, well, Simply Red
11- "Late Night Tales" by Jamiroquai!
I am surely forgetting A LOT!!!!! But that is basically what changed my mind over this last 6 years, when I discovered the music itself.

Yeah, a very cool topic dude. Im only 23, but a lot of these albums I discovered years later than when they were popular.
For me:
1) Blood Sugar Sex Magik Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Top to bottom this album is one of the best ever. Under the Bridge, Give it Away now are the backbone, but this album is straight funky.
2) Dangerous: Michael Jackson
He was my favorite Singer up to when I was an early teen, and I still like his music today (Im talkin music alone, not his non-career activities). The highlight for me and my friends when I was 11 or 12, is when we saw Michael Jackson: Live at Wembley stadium on HBO.
3) When Disaster Strikes: Busta Rhymes
This was by far his best album, and one of the most underrated rap albums of all time. It's awesome top to bottom, but I think it doesn't get it's just due because it didn't start or change an era or genre. It's just plain good.
4) Unplugged: Nirvana
Yeah of course everyone knows about Nevermind and Smells like Teen Spirit, but this was the album that really made me apprecitae Cobain. His perfomance was so powerful and so moving, that I swear I got choked up when he sang "My Girl". If you guys know when Cobain's bday is, or the date when he died, MTV will usually air that special so turn it to MTV on either of those days.
5) Travelling Without Moving: Jamiroquai
I think Synkronized is Jam's best album, but like 99 out of 100 other American Jamiroqaui fans, we discovered the band because of Virtual Insanity and this album. But it got me to buy all the others, AND TO MEET ALL OF YOU COOL PEOPLE.
6) The Slim Shady LP: Eminem
It started the monster that is Eminem. Everything this dude touches goes platinum now. But can you blame him? He's the best in the Rap game hands down. I usually like everything he comes out with (Except for D12's my band, it sucks) for about the first 2 days, until every radio station and MTV plays it out.
7) 311: 311
I discovered the band and the album when the song "Down" became popular on MTV and all the radio stations. It got me to buy many of their other albums and I love them to this day. They are also one of the best tour bands out there (And they love playin club gigs!). If you ever get a chance to see these guys live don't pass it up.
Sublime: Sublime
Another example of "only the good die young" statement. Just like Nirvana, oh what could of been with this band if Brad Nowell hadn't died. This was an awesome album (known for the famous songs "What I got", "Wrong Way" and "Santeria"). I discovered them for this album, but the more unsung 40 oz. to Freedom album is just as good.
9) Death Row's Greatest hits: Assorted artists. Putting up Dr Dre's "the Chronic", or Snoop Dogg's "Doggystyle", or Tupac's "All Eyez on Me", it would take up too much space puttin all these albums on my list, but these guys were Rap in the early to mid 90's (with the exception of Notorious B.I.G.). This album you get most of the hits from each album. Maybe the best rap album of all time in my opinion for the collection of hits on it.
T11th) Turn the Radio Off: Reel Big Fish and A Place in the Sun: Lit
I never got into the whole Ska/Swing fad of the late '90s, but even liked Reel Big Fish and the Might Mighty Bosstones. Both Turn the Radio Off and Real Big fish made this list because of my first year in college. Both albums were the anchor cds we played on 5 hour long drives home from college, and also the soundtracks to the fierce Mario Kart (N64 version) competitions we'd have.
Sorry to ramble on with my life story, but I figured the albums needed reasoning for why they were the most inlfuential.
Sone quick honorable mentions and then I'll shut up.
"All World": LL Cool J
-His greatest hits album up to '98 or '99
"Design of a Decade": Janet Jackson
-Her Greatest Hits Album up to the "Janet" album of '94 (no wardrobe malfunctions included).
"Pablo Honey": Radiohead
-I really enjoy all of the albums and I respect the way that the quality of music they put out on each albums stays the same even though their sound always seems to change
"Ready to Die": Notorious B.I.G.
-An essential Rap album. Another example of "what could've been" if he wasn't murdered (same for Tupac). _________________ Wouldn't 'ya like... To walk the sunny avenues of life? |

2 questions:
1) What's the significance of 11 albums?
2) To Vitually Insane or anyone who can vouch: Was the Lucy Pearl Album really that good? If it is Im gonna go buy it. I loved the song "I wanna dance tonight". But I figured they were a one-hit wonder (which they seem to be, are they even together anymore? I've seen Raphael Saadiq do some solo work but...) so I didn't even consider buying it. _________________ Wouldn't 'ya like... To walk the sunny avenues of life? |
