Technology s everywhere. But should it be? And do we rule it or does it rule us?

I was recently asked a friend's phone number and realized I didn't know it although I call them on a regular basis. I had no idea what the number was and would not have known it without checking on my cell phone. Are we, as a society, becoming too reliant on technology?

Definately!
And that's doing not a good thing with our memory:(
I have the same problem with mobile phone numbers - I don't remember them, at all - if you now ask me I'll have to look up my phone book at cell phone:)
And those calculators in our cell phones Rolling Eyes
With this technical progress soon we'll forget multiplication table:))

Yeah, I said studying just because we're talking about intelligence. While working it's a good thing, relax and seem busy Wink

Rolling Eyes Where could I find rare records and promos in normal shops?...this is a pro of technology, internet cuts off the distances.

I understand what you mean Marina btw Smile It's laziness wehn somebody buys HT the Singles from the internet and pays it more than in the shop around the corner just to receive it at home Smile

yes because like in the cars that can drive itselfs-yeah, some of them can park themselves-and with alot of ''help'' of the technology many people can become a idiot easily
and no because, like me.there's people tryitng to learn how to rip, trying to learn some things to do with this technology...
all is not bad, but u dont must become a slave of the technology Evil or Very Mad

how about car navigation

I heard stories about people relying too much on that thing on their dashboard that they had no idea where they were when it seized working - I prefer the old map technique accompanied by navigation (if the car I'm driving has one and right now that's not the case)

I asked a professor once (who specialized in genetics) if human DNA was any different now than what it had been in the past (of homo sapiens). She said the DNA isnt any different... people back then were capable understanding what we understand today. one way of defining technology is to say that technology is 'the sum of a society's practical culture or knowledge' (encarta). part of what makes us different from the past is that we have an accumulation of years of culture. So maybe the question would be is technology killing our culture. I dont think that technology or relying on machines makes us directly less intelligent. But with how machine technology (like computers) are set up at the moment people are perhaps becoming less sociable and are losing the ability to interact and feel connected with others... thats the main problem with machine technology. we can pick up a book and relearn math, you know... losing the ability to get along with others is a little harder to fix. that my two cents Wink

Agree.
Individuals can become less sociable and more and more self-centered.
For example, shopping can be done from home. Ticket for a show can be booked through computers. Sales of shares can be done through computers. Books in libraries can be reserved through computers and so on....
We have the technology and there s no doubt that technology enables us to do bigger and better things. That's sure but i think we rely on it TOO much!
Do we really need a talking gps unit in our cars? Do we really NEED to view the web on a 2 inch cell phone screen?

totally agree people

thats the problem with money driven innovation: we have improvement on game consules, cell phones, but not as much on lets say making electronics extremely energy effecient or alternative power sources. technology too is putting a wedge into class division, you know with how things are designed to be extremely individualistic we become less social and more seperated. the technology in itself isnt bad but how its implemented is...

No we don't. The reality distorsion is:

Some years ago there was needs and new technologies were developed to take care of those needs.

Now there are technologies and people create the need of them.
