Help Needed - Ideas for Teaching Session
Hi,

As a few of you know, I've been doing a course which will give me a teaching qualification - I have one session left on Thursday, I have to deliver a 30 minute teaching session to a class and hand in 5 assignments.

Had a few hiccups which means I've left everything to the last minute - so I have to do all the work this weekend!

My main prob is the teaching session - I can do it on whatever subject I like - I was going to deliver a lesson on manipulation of digital images but this would be very very very boring - and I need something that the class can interact with too.

Okay...my idea now is to do a 30 lesson on ...Jamiroquai!!!! I need to bring some interaction to the class, so I thought I could get them to make Jay Kay hats! (we could have fun with feathers and sequins!)

I was thinking I could start off with a quiz, to assess their knowledge of the band (will play "name that tune" or something!) ...then progress to giving brief history etc.

does anyone have any ideas of anything i could add to my lesson??????

The thought of standing up in front of all of these people and talking scares me to death - so thought I'd find a subject matter that makes me happy!

Help!!!!

Hey Jan - I don't know how old your students are going to be...but something you could do is put them in groups and assign them a Jamiroquai song. Have them take the lyrics and give their intepretation of what the song means. Maybe even give them 2 songs to compare.
This is teaching them about literacy, poetry, writing.

You can also find a bunch of articles about the band or print them out and have them create a timeline of their progression, albums, etc.
This will teach them about making a timeline, putting things in order, sequencing.

You can also give them the articles or make an outline of Jamiroquai and give them the crossword to do that David had on Funkin a long time ago. This will teach them about finding information and using it to complete a project.

Depending on time and the multimedia tools available where you have to teach, you can also pick a few videos to show them and make a sheet of things for them to point out...like hunger in WYGL, sexuality in FJLIS, animation and symbolism in DGHAC.

As a ending to the class, maybe make a CD for them of Jamiroquai music. Don't tell them they are getting them, but surprise them in the end. Maybe even have the group that does the best get the CD only or something. This will provide them with incentive to really complete and do the best on their project as possible.

I say do something in groups, because it will teach them how to work together. I gave all Jamiroquai examples because you expressed teaching a lesson on Jamiroquai.

The hats also sound cool also. If they are young, they will love arts and crafts..well, I know my students do and I love doing them. I just encourage you to incorporate a lesson within that also.

Name that tune is fun, but it might be frustrating for those that are really unfamiliar with the band. You could play songs and have them identify the instruments that they hear, and then maybe if you could get concert footage or have them watch a video of the guys playing that song they heard...you can tie that all back together.

Again, the ideas can be tailored to the age of your students.

Sorry this is overwhelming, I just love teaching. I hope you have a great time and good luck! Oh, and the fear is understandable, but think of it this way - you know more than they know about the subject (most likely), so you have the power...work it out girl Heart

failing that, why don't you just sit there listening to some of the albums for half an hour & wen the class are about to ask wot the heck they're s'posed to be doing, just 'shoo' them away & tell them youre listening to Jamiroquai because youre scared about talking to them...either that or run outta the room screaming 'when are THEY gonna learn?!'....cud work?

Janice you can also let them do a little article about what they have learned hat day upon JMQ! maybe in groups they will have to choose a title, a subject that was more important for them...(like a song, a phrase or the story of the band) so thet you can also check by yourself if you did teach well, kind of a verify of what you said!

Jan, I don't mean to crush your idea but to be honest, I don't think it's a good idea to do something about Jamiroquai, or any band for that matter (okay, perhaps "the beatles" would be an exception). To me, it just makes it very obvious that it's something close to you, and in a way that comes across as a bit immature, if you know what I mean.

Perhaps you can pick a subject that's been in the news currently. Something that ligns up with the age of the students you will be teaching.
Good luck!

hmmm maybe....

My heads just stuck for ideas - another student suggested decorating easter eggs....

One of the other students did a session on how to ice a gingerbread man! One did Origami (sp?) So nothing's too high-brow!

You can easily tie something in from the news with a Jamiroquai song also...making it more about the issue than the band. If that makes sense.

From your response Jan - you want this to be a sort of craft thing - which I totally dig, but remember they are supposed to be learning, so just tie that in the best you can.

Have faith - You'll do fine with whatever you do! Just have fun and keep it simple. As I said, depending on the age group some of the ideas I posted...may or may not work.

and FJ - I've tied Jamiroquai into many, many, many of my lessons and no complaints from any of my students over the past 5 years or any of the teachers above me. There are so many ways to do it without coming off as 'personal'. I've used Jamiroquai to teach about the evolution of music, sex, sub-genres, hunger, poverty in general, racism, cultures, instruments. Some of those examples are from years past. Using something you love to teach is really amazing actually - you get excited to teach about it and therefore, that spills over to your communication. This is just from my personal experience. I don't use the band's music for everything, but I could go on forever, but Jan - you know how to reach me if you need any help or anything.

And nurse that hangover Wink
