THE SERPENTINE SUMMER PARTY
THE jewel in London's summer society crown sparkled last night: the annual Serpentine summer party, this year co-hosted by the house of Yves Saint Laurent, brought together a glittering guest list for Laurent Perrier Grand Siecle Champagne and Grey Goose designer cocktails. On the lawn around and beneath an impressive balloon-topped Pavilion – this year designed by Rem Koolhaas and Cecil Balmond – the crowd mingled among pink YSL flowers (and signs saying "Please pick the flowers"), and watched the stars arrive: Kristen Scott Thomas, Linda Evangelista (six months pregnant), Yasmin and Simon Le Bon, Tilda Swinton, Mischa Barton, Elle Macpherson, Natalia Vodianova and Justin Portman, Gabriela and Freddie Windsor, David Furnish, Jay Kay… the list went on and on. Once the star-spotting was over, guests busied themselves with enjoying the pink-swathed surroundings – even the balloon turned pink later on – all of which had been carefully conceived by YSL creative director Stefano Pilati, who had also enrolled a line-up of enormously tall models in pink taffeta as an entourage. "What could be a better dream, for a man to fall on earth and discover a new universe where everything is pink and women are over 6 feet tall," he said. "The summer party is a hint to femininity expressed from a male version of Alice in Wonderland!" And while many of the ladies there had picked their favourite YSL look in homage to Pilati, it was Alice Temperley who was celebrating a big fashion moment – most people who weren't in YSL were in her dresses. "I've counted 15 so far!" said the British designer, herself in a flesh pink crochet version. "My husband Lars saw someone in one as soon as we arrived and we just keep spotting more. It's really exciting. I love the Serpentine party – last year it got pretty wild and there was a bit of broken glass about by the end, so Lars wouldn't let me come barefoot tonight. I wanted to as I couldn't find shoes to go with my dress." It's definitely an event not to miss, no matter how lofty your social heights. "I always come to the Serpentine party if I'm in the country," said fashion doyenne Suzy Menkes, who lives in Paris. "In fact this year I delayed my holiday by a day so I could make it."
