Your Best/Worst Concert Ever
1. What has been your favorite concert of all the ones you attended? and what made it the best? As in, you'd drink water and eat just fruit for 2 months to afford to go see this person or group again.
AND
2. What is the worst concert you have ever attended?, and what made it so horrible? As in if someone gave you a free ticket, a ride there and free drinks, you wouldn't go see this person or group again?
Don't feel because this is a Jamiroquai forum you have to put them in the 'best' category, and you can't put it in the worst category.
Keep it real and honest. Gotta get to a meeting, so I'll be back with mine tomorrow. Plus, I have to think about it . _________________ www.dee34.wordpress.com |

hehe... I'm surprised this topic hasn't come up before- Good one Deesh.
I'll say I've been lucky enough to have gone to a lot of good ones, and only a few duds.
Best- A tie between
Jamiroquai's 2nd NYC concert last October. Both nights were awesome, but the 2nd night had a better set list... I got to meet the guys, got to hang out with Deesh and the rest of the crew. An experience I'll never forget.
The other one- Linkin Park at the Quest Club in Minneapolis on March 15, 2003. At the time I was kinda into these guys. I thought their debut album- "Hybrid Theory" was a damn good album. But this show was a club show for their fan club members. They went on a club tour to thank their "really hardcore" fans and to promote their next album "Meteora".
Well the show sold out in less than 5 minutes. I didn't try very hard to get tix, because I had know that the show was gonna sell out fast. But, a trick I've tried a few times when shows sell out, is going online to ticketmaster 1-2 days before the show. Sometimes the band will release some extra tickets to the public right at the last minute. Well, I go online, and boom! tickets available! So I buy 2 tickets, and there's only one guy I think of calling. There's a guy who I lived with and went to school with in South Dakota who seriously is the biggest Linkin Park fan on the planet. He worships Linkin Park like we worship Jamiroquai.
So I tell him to get in the car and drive (he had about a 3 hour drive to get to MPLS, but he made it). Part of what makes a show really good, is not just how good the band plays, but the atmosphere of the concert. And nothing contributes better to a concert than a bunch of rowdy fanatics (as Jami fans we know this so well). And that's what the audience pretty much was since, it was all fan club members and group supporters.
So the club was packed with a bunch of crazy Linkin Park junkies. The place was seriously packed! And the band played with so much energy! They played for just about an hour and a half, and it was one of the most electrifying shows ever! It was so hot, and everyone was singing... and pushing, and jumping, and going nuts. People singing every word... people screaming.
I SWEAR... NO OFFENSE GUYS... NOT EVEN A JAMIROQUAI SHOW HAD THE FANS AND THE ATMOSPHERE THAT THIS SHOW HAD. Just the passion Linkin Park played with, combo'd with the craziest Linkin Park fans around... made this show unbelieveable!
Worst- 311 at Roy Wilkins Auditorium: St Paul, MN November 4, 2005. I've seen these guys 2 other times live- And both times they rocked! They're a great live band. But this show was at maybe the worst venue in town for a show, it was only half-full (there was no publicitiy for the concert, so not many people knew they were even in town), and it seemed liked the band was just going through the motions. Just a buzz-kill all the way around. _________________ Wouldn't 'ya like... To walk the sunny avenues of life? |

we saw THE WAILERS live at the beach, for free, with sunset included
the band was fantastic, and so was the atmosphere

well, I have no worst concert, but the best was of course Jamiroquai at Buenos Aires this year. The feeling was amazing.
But very close to this one is the one of James Brown last year at the Luna Park (Argentina) and back in Oct. 2004, Living Colour. I know you said only one, the BEST. But these were very very cool . |

Best - a toss up between:
- Lovebox, for the day and the experience with so many wonderful people as much as anything (I have no idea why the bold tabs have done that, I've double-checked and I definitely typed them in correctly... *fixed it, there was a tiny mistake in your tabs, Mouse
- Joe Zawinul live at Bridgwater Hall in Manchester, February 2004
- Billy Cobham live at Band On The Wall in Manchester, October 2003
I had a very bad cold the night of the BC gig, and had to leave it early, so incredible though it was (one of the greatest jazz drummers ever, in a room maybe half the size of the STAGE at Lovebox...), that's ruled out...
On the one hand, I met Derrick before Lovebox. On the other, I shook the hand of a living jazz GOD at the end of the Zawinul gig (the man himself)... but for the weather, and the day, and the setlist, and above everything else the PEOPLE I SAW IT WITH, Lovebox has to win. If only because it was one of the best weekends of my life.
Worst - absolutely no contest. Toploader way back when I was young and stupid. Any band who get overshadowed by their support act really have let you down. Especially when the support act in question were themselves pretty shit...
Sam
PS: However, there's a jazz pub in Bristol that has excellent jazz bands for FREE every night. I go in there regularly. And one night during the summer about three years ago, me and Nick (my best mate) went in there and it was just amazing. Three old men, playing upright bass, piano and drums, doing everything from oldschool jazz to fusion, on a really hot, sweaty night... and for some reason, on a MONDAY NIGHT, the place was absolutely jam-packed full. Nick and I ended up standing right up against the stage, having to lean on the piano so that we didn't fall onto it, whilst sweat dripped from the walls and the entire world (so it seemed) was shaking. Since we didn't PAY for it, and since nobody will have heard of the guys who were playing, I've not included it in the above list. But if anyone of you ever want to come to Bristol, just let me know... I'll be happy to show you this magical pub. _________________ More fútbol argentino than you can shake a mullet at - Hasta El Gol Siempre |

Pete - I had to think about this and then I forgot to reply!!
The Best is a 3 way tie..hahaha - breaking my own rules
Smookin Grooves Tour 1995 in Ohio with Cypress Hill, Spearhead, A Tribe Called Quest, Fugees, Busta Rhymes and the Poor Righteous Teachers - Look at the lineup, need I say more? I got to meet Busta Rhymes (which is a bad story, but whatever) and the one and only Ms.Lauryn Hill. This is when the Fugees were in their glory or beginning their glory. ATCQ and PRT teamed up and did SCENARIO. I thought I was going to pass out. I was 18, skinny and had a matching outfit on with my best friend - - those were the days!
Jamiroquai in New York on 10-24-06 and 10-25-06 with Pete and the others. It was just a beautiful night. From the waiting in line to partying with the guys to getting a condom shout out from Jay to getting home at 4am and going straight to work to hanging with the other Jamily crew to selling out the venue 2 nights in a row, and to being there with my girls Claudia and Chena. It was just magical (sorry to sound like a Disney commercial).
Lovebox 2006 - for the obvious - It just capped the summer of doing what I wanted to do - being front row with everyone, waking up ass crack early, standing between Zed and Claud singing, going to the funkin party, everything - just being in London. It went too damn fast.
The worst concert:
Alicia Keys in New Jersey in 2003 - It was horrible. She plays piano and sings right? So why the hell would they book her at a venue that is outdoor and huge - set for a Dave Matthews concert. The acoustics and sound just sucked. You could barely hear her and the mic wasn't wired to the piano right. She danced more than she sang. She should have been in a nice hall or something. We left early it was so bad. Everyone around us left too. Never again will I see that chic in an outdoor, festival type setting. ugh! But, the tickets were free, so I should shut up now!

!!!!!!!!!
Faves so far have been:
1. Jamiroquai - Lovebox 06 - as Deesh mentioned, the whole atmosphere was great and the day whizzed by - everything about that day was magical. The weather was perfect, meeting the Jamily, front row, the bands were great, fun fun fun all around. Jamiroquai were excellent!
2. Jamiroquai - North Sea Jazz 06 - the first JQ concert for me this year. Front row, a loooong wait (but fun, thanks to Jeroen!). First time I met Meike which was great and the Jamily was so so nice. Meeting the boys backstage and drinking with Derrick was a good laugh - though surreal !
3. Ok don't laugh, but (and I was young then) front row at the CAPITAL RADIO JUNIOR BEST DISCO in 1988 I saw Rick Astley, Bros, Brother Beyond amongst others. About 15 of us travelled into town on an old London double decker bus which a friend's father hired especially for the occassion That was a great night!
The worst gig ever (due to the location, place, public, weather), I would have to say was Jamiroquai Tuferschwil, CH in August, but that's a looooong story! ! _________________ Jamiroquai - it's stitched into the clothes that I wear... |

The best was David Sanborn&Friends,July96,Montreux Jazzfestival. Few month ago I had started my Saxophonlessons and it was so exiting for me to see how my saxgod work this amazing instrument.I was in the frontrow, can´t stop to look at his fingers and at the end of the gig I be encouraged and get his signature on my "Blatt".Don´t know the english word for this wooden part of a saxmounthpiece And this were the day my mate and I fall in love and we are married since 7 years
Pink Floyd,August94,Hockenheimring,cause they had playing nearly all titles from my fav album(Darkside of the moon).
Last but not least the 4 Simply Red Concerts i have seen in the 80´.All times having fun, dancing my ass off.Mick Hucknall is simply great singer
And with worse concert I can´t serve,sorry. _________________ I´m breaking out,I´m flying higher than a pig in space |

It's interesting how a couple of us have mentioned that a big factor in some of the worst concerts we've seen have been the venue (or the band playing at a bad one).
Have any of you guys ever seen an act and thought that the venue they play at sucks? It's too big for the band? Too small? What else is bad about it? _________________ Wouldn't 'ya like... To walk the sunny avenues of life? |

My best...
Well it's three shows, two artists!!
Two of the shows were for Beverley Knight. First time I saw her was off the back of the AFO tour when she was supporting Jami & the second time was a couple of months ago. As you guys probably know I'm a big fan of hers anyway but she's one of these artists that just comes to life when she plays live. Despite all the fancy tricks of a studio she sounds a million times better live & the power in her voice is just amazing. Both times I saw her the audience was so relaxed & mellow: everyone just smiling, singing & dancing along...
The other show was Ian Brown. He's such a gifted songwriter & musician & I think I was lucky enough to see him on a night when he was happy to be on stage!! He performed all the best songs including Stone Roses favourites & he had real stage presence. He was perfectly balanced on that line between cockiness which gives an artist that swagger which brings the best out of them, without crossing the line into arroagance.
The worst...
Two shows, two different artists this time!
First was a good few years ago. It was to see this band called The Bellrays which no-one ever seems to have heard of! (For info the woman who sings on the Basement Jaxx song "Good Luck", Lisa Kekula I think her name is, was the singer with The Bellrays) Well I went with one of my best friends: she's nearly seven years younger than me so at the time I was kinda entrusted with her safety. In restrospect, two girls going to see some weird rock band in a slightly dubious part of London probably wasn't the wisest move!! There were pluses to the night: the venue was this cool little tiered theatre (it was round) & was lit with blacklighting. The support act (D4) were good. They really got the small audience warmed up. Then The Bellrays... Oh dear, not good, NOT good at ALL. The support completely showed them up & I don't want to risk sounding old but they were sooooo loud my ears seriously hurt. Things went from bad to worse when the singer (this Lisa K) got involved in this abusive, profanity throwing, screaming arguement with some guy in the audience who threw a beer can onto the stage. I've never seen a person actually shoot firebolts out of their eyes until that night! On the way home the typical London transport system screwed up & we were stuck one station down from where the car was parked. We were stuck there nearly an hour.
Second show was earlier this year: Me First & The Gimme Gimmes. To be fair, this wasn't so bad as The Bellrays. A load of us met at this bar beforehand so the evening started well enough. Got into the venue: still going fine. I'd not been well & had a bad cough so after the support act who were very forgetable, I went to the bar just to get some water. Basically after that I wasn't able to get back down to my friends. OK I know I'm not a "small" person but I'm not very tall & I was physically unable to push past 6ft5 bald, tatooed men wearing kilts. I wasn't even too keen on trying if I'm honest! So I spent most of the gig standing on my own having a sulk & trying to fend off unwelcome adavnces from a guy matching the above mentioned description!! Then coming home, welcome to public transport collapse part two! Somebody had fallen onto the lines at one of the stations so the underground line we needed was closed so we had to hop onto the bus... I think the driver was a tourist (no offence to tourists intended!) as he kept getting lost! Basically what should have been a journey from gig venue to my front door of an hour max, ended up taking three hours!! |
