It's not the easiest film to watch. In my opinion a fair bit of the praise it gets is more down to it being Kubrick than anything else. But it IS cool, and that's not something you can say for many sci-fi films.
To anyone genuinely interested, I recommend the book, by Arthur C. Clarke. He wrote it in consultation with Kubrick whilst Kubrick was making the film. So it's a sort of book-of-the-film-of-the-book. Whilst the film is actually a film-of-the-book-of-the-film. And the ending in the book actually makes sense (unlike the film), which is a bonus.
