well it all started bealive it or not 30-40 years ago. then beatles ruled the world so american corporations were pissed and they were very happy when they desapierd. CD managers thought ''now is time for USA bands''. But as ussually british music is music more better so then came Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Animals, David Bowie...

USA publishers decided to stop this British invasion, as it is ussualy called in literature, so they simply started censuring all european music. Suddenly all kind of new music started to appear like funk, rnb, and soul was becoming more and more popular. Today all kind of crap like rap, rnb.... became popular. ALL FROM USA.

Sad part of story is that USA really has good musicians but it looks to me like even their own good musicians today dont have so much space in this stupid rnb shit!!!!!!

OPEN OUR MUSIC BORDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mad

A valid personal opinion but this discussion is turning into an excuse to knock different genre's of music simply if its not your own particular favoured brand to listen too.

Music, or merely music appreciation in this country is really in the doldrums

In my opinion music appreciation includes recognising & respecting individuals genre preferences. It would also include: being open minded enough to listen to stuff that you've not heard before judging it & realising not all music can neatly fit into the niche of one particular genre...

I think in some senses the music being thrust onto American music listeners is horrible, but only in some areas. In terms of candy bubble gum pop like Britney Spears, or Hillary Duff, you know they are there for bein hot or have a crazy personality, and not for their musical talents (or if you're the sister to another crappy pop start: Ashely Simpson). That right there is too bad. To prove this point more than anything, I hear that Paris Hilton is now recording an album!!!! That makes me think the world is gonna end lol.

But in terms of a lot of rock, and rap and r&b, I think some of this music is having an absolute renaissance right now. Hear me out for a minute. "Candy Shop" from 50 Cent is where it is on the charts, because people like him and his music (me not as much as most people). Beyonce and her group, Destiny's Child is where it is, because for the most part they make good music. When it comes to both her and 50 cent, they offer the perfect combination of quality music and good looks, and the charisma to go with it.

I had the absolute privlege of seeing the 2nd of 3 straight sold out Alicia Keys shows in Chicago last weekend. She's not selling out theaters and arenas, and selling millions of albums because Clear Channel, MTV, and the other outlets cram her stuff down our throat and give us no choice, she's where she is because she's damn good!

As for Rock, look at the recent efforts of Franz Ferdinand, the Killers, the Hives, and the Strokes. Ad more pop-friendly rock like U2 and Maroon 5. These bands are all getting main stream, top 40 airplay on U.S. stations. These guys are all there because they are good.

So Jamirofan and everyone else, I agree when it comes to crap pop they play on the radio and try to push as what's "good" these days. But only in that area. I think there a lot of good things going on about music right now too.

But the final thing that can be said about this, is enough people like this stuff to keep it going unfortunately. Clear Channel and MTv=V and every other media outlet would not be cramming this music down our throats if enough people thought it sucked. If people think the music being offered to them sucks, they won't buy albums. If they don't buy albums, and there's a lack of interest, that's when we'll start to hear other stuff. But obviously this isn't happeneing, so enough people like what's being played today. That can be a "double-edged sword" in some instances, because some hip hop and r & b and rock is good right now, but teen pop isn't very good. Both are successful though.

well looks like we have here different opinions. to me music is not just a ''taste''. I think there is a better and worst music. and there REALLY IS!
it is not just my opinion that rolling stones r better than beyonce our other USA crap. that is the way it is. rolling stones can do every single song of that rnb (which 97% comes from USA) and beyonce.... dont wanna even think of her doing any good evergreen. have u ever heard a matrice of any rap our rnb song. if not TRY! and i mean try, cos normal people can listen to that. for example try this last song of J LO.

You can't enter the Rolling Stones into this argument, because they have not come out with any music lately. They play good music, but what Jamirofan is talking about is bands that are making music today.

As for the bands mentioned except for the Strokes, whom are from New York, you are right, they are from Europe. But Im just mentioning bands and artists in general that are getting major airplay in the U.S. right now.

I don't even know where to start on this one! I'm just going to go ahead and state my opinion here. Well, from my perspective (living in the U.S.) I grew up watching MTV and VH1 since I was about 3 when Mtv actually played VIDEOS. Lost cable for a couple of years, got cable back about a couple of months ago and wouldn't you know, I can't find ONE video. Oh, I'm sorry, they (MTV) play videos on TRL-the countdown that clearchannel pretty much decides on and rams down your throat-and even then, they don't even play the whole video! And Vh1 is now nothing but celebrity gossip and celebrity has-been shows. Frustrating.
I am so sickened with the American music right now-its such a disgrace! I agree with VirtuallyInsane that it is, in part, laziness to venture out and find good music on our own. But, when kids and teenagers do not know where to even look outside of whats being pushed on them, of course they will just take a liking to what everybody else is doing. The people who are out finding the awesome music on their own do not matter to these corporate monkeys! I think the reason for that is the "real music" people are too sprawled out and their liking of music is so diverse that they (record companies) see a little money here and a little money there, but not in massive amounts, so therefore, the "real music" doesn't get the promotion or the financial backing for big tours leaving us (the american public) once again, in the dark.
I am so sick of the same crap, nothing against rap- I do like some of it, but come on!!! I'm so sick of ghetto being trendy! Anybody with me on this one? Is ghetto trendy in other countries? I can't take it! But, I just don't listen to the radio anymore or watch those sad excuses for music channels. It would just be nice for once to turn on the radio and hear something really cool, something thats just like, "whoa, whats this?!" It would be cool. And if you think our mainstream music is bad, you should see our dance clubs! (at least where I live)
I'm not saying that ALL of american music that makes it to mainstream is bad, I'm just sick of old white men who don't even like this stuff themselves are controlling the airwaves. It's all about money and power and it sickens me. A lot of people outside of the U.S. view the general American public as a bunch of morons and I can't blame them seeing how subliminally our public is controlled. It's the power hungry men and women at the top who give us this reputation and its sad Crying or Very sad It makes me wander sometimes, how free is this country?
Sorry about the length, I just wanted to get that out. This is just my own personal opinion, it was not meant to push any buttons or offend anyone and if it did, I offer my sincere apologies. Thanks for reading my rant Smile

There are VERY FEW American bands/singers that I like. I find that its all clones of each other, nothings original. Most bands i like are either British or from some obscure country. Most bands I like no-one my ages has heard of.

ah yes but most people don't just look at the US's music and say "how screwed up is that?!?!", they (usually) look at the whole country and say how bad is that. no offense.

here's one thing that i havent noticed in the US industry: there isnt one person in the industry, or a circle of people, who can look at a band and say "that needs work, lets do something about it". i refer to the great man: Quincy Jones.

there arent people like this great man who are around anymore. how sad.

there isnt a core of instrumental players who are recognized: bands are now being recognized as disposable. there aren't any great guitar players, bass players, drummers, etc. who are form a 1-2 year old band who are easily recognizable.

i dont know how to put this into words, but now the focus is just on "shock rock" as my dad puts it and no memorable bands who reek of nostalgia and/or memories.

the only bands who are still around with this "memorable bands" status are: U2, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Duran Duran (well not really).

sadly but not suprisingly, Jamiroquai isnt on that list. how sad.

but the American Music Industry is now festering off the children of the people who grew through the "Golden Age" of American Music, and that was the 70's/Early 80's. the industry is now just filling these kids with trashy music that is just shit. it just infuriates me when i see our (australia's) industry cave in to shiesen housen music coming over form the pacific. yeesh.
