Some days to the end of this year are still remaining, so there is possibility to make changes, but for now I think the order seems like this:
1. Robert Baltzar Trio - Overnight
2. Atar & Funkadrome - Funkadrome
3. The Real Group - In The Middle Of Life
4. Monkey Business - Kiss Me On My Ego
5. Dan Barta & Illustratosphere - Retropictures: Live
--------------------------------------------------
6.-11. (in alphabetic order only)
Al Green - Everything`s OK
Chris Rea - Blue Guitars
Herbie Hancock - Possibilities
Jamiroquai - Dynamite (but the version with TWW because of TWW!)
Real - Give Me A Reason
Stevie Wonder - A Time 2 Love
--------------------------------------------------
I know that some bands you don`t know, because they are popular only in Czech Republic - but they are as good as any others worldwide well-known bands. For example Monkey Business performed in London two months ago in Cargo club and they had a great success (apart from more known band Crazy Penis with whom they performed in the same time at the same place). Robert Balzar with his two friends are known in foreign countries, but I`m sad that I can not write well-known. For me they are (also with Dan Barta) the best jazz band I actually know (Illustratosphere contains all people from Robert Balzar trio and three more)! The Real Group is best jazz vocal group I know (and best vocal group also); they are from Sweden. If you want more, feel free to click on each name of the group or ask me a question! |

Ufff.. That song 'You're Beautiful' IS EVERYWHERE, I'm starting to hate it. Although I haven't heard the album, and I'm not planning to.
On the other hand, 'Illumination' is currently staying a lot on my cd-player, something that doesn't usually happen with newer records. I think is a very very good album, and nice to see them back after so many years making such great music. |
That's true, You're beautiful is everywhere but, believe me, I've heard all the album and it's excellent. Life is sometimes very complicated, stressful, and this kind of music makes me more human, I don't know how to explain this sensation ...But it's good . Of course almost all songs are very similar, but I think this fact don't makes the album unworthy. In this album less is more, and simple songs like Goodbye my lover (piano+voice) are fabulous.
However, I totally agree with you about 'Illumination' . Nice funk and boogie rhythms to relocate Eart wind and fire at the top of quality disco music! Cool |

I am making my top 10 for the newspaper now, so I will post it as soon as I'm done, but I want to say 2 things..
Common's BE was phenomenal. I was so damn impressed. The beats, the lyrics, everything...Pete, TESTIFY was my favorite from day 1. And THE CORNER with the Last Poets - classic! Also, the live track from the CHAPELLE show with Kayne was wonderful. I remember seeing that on there and thinking I had to get that song!
And the Gilles fans - I listen to that show all day courtesy of www.giantstep.net. If you all haven't slid over there, I suggest you do so. And his BBC Sessions Double Disk is definitely on my list. It's so nice to hear music like that being distributed.
And Jamie Cullum - I agree with that too. His music I think just takes you somewhere else, truly talented.
moro - I dig your music selection. Definitely the vibe I am on. |

okay. i had to choose 10 for the paper and it was a struggle.i mean, struggle. i had to think of the albums that i listen to over and over. the ones that production and lyrics just came together and this is what i chose....this is going to be out in the paper (www.citypaper.net) in 2 weeks. from all the writers rankings, the top 20 will be chosen. Citypaper is more of a rock paper, so we'll see....We aren't supposed to nominate our friends' albums, but #10 is a real good friend of mine, but the album is brilliant, so I had to think of a honorable mention just in case my editor pulls it off my list.
1. Jamiroquai - Dynamite (Epic)
2. Common - BE (Geffen)
3. Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine (Epic)
4. Gilles Peterson - The BBC Live Sessions (Roots ‘N’ Fruits)
5. Leela James - A Change Is Gonna Come (Warner)
6. Jamie Lidell - Multiply (Warp)
7. Jamie Cullum - Catching Tales (Verve Forecast)
8. Stevie Wonder - A Time To Love (Motown)
9. Jneiro Jarel - Three Piece Puzzle (Ropeadope)
10. Reef the Lost Cauze - Feast or Famine (Eastern Conference)
honorable mention: Little Brother - The Minstrel Show (Atlantic) |
