I can live with ditigal downloads only as long as the music is good.

But... I belong to another generation... the generation who collected vinyl in the 80's and slowly but surely accepted the CD format and begun collecting those. When I was a teenager there was a record shop in every corner. Record fairs were held at least twice/year in the little town I'm from. It was a collector's heaven. The happiness when you came home with a plastic bag full of records... listening to the live bootlegs, watching the cover art etc.

Those were the days...

Digital downloads isn't just MP3, there are other options... big files with good quality and small files with less quality. But this isn't the same as owning something you can touch. I certainly hope Jay won't forget about those who actually wants to buy something "real". It's like books, I'd rather have a book than a PDF. Sure I can print it just as I can burn a CD, but it isn't the same.

Would you like some virtual mustard with that holographic hot dog? Wink

First of all, I wouldn't trust this news just because a local British newspaper has reported it. That's not to say it won't happen, but wait until you actually see it before believing it. Papers can spout a lot of crap in the name of an 'exclusive'.

Secondly:

acid jazz is still around.

No it's not. There IS still a record company called Acid Jazz, but it's not the same company any more. The original Acid Jazz went bust in the late '90s and was bought from EDDIE (not Charlie) Piller by an American label who also bought the rights to use the name and a fair bit (I don't think ALL) of the AJ back catalogue. So the statement 'Acid Jazz is around' is true, but the statement 'Acid Jazz is STILL around', implying the same record company as released WYGL the first time round... well, strictly speaking that's not the case.

Thirdly:

I'm with Clav here. It's also not the same for another reason - pay to download an official release onto your hard drive now, sure, but in a few years' time when you come to buy a new PC, what happens to it then? And in a few decades' time, would your Jamiroquai collection on your shelf consist of a load of CD-Rs with computer-printed covers? Really nice way to remember your favourite band, isn't it?

I'm 22, and I've known CDs and 'digital' music all my life. But give me a 'hard copy' over some file name on my PC any day of the week, thanks very much!

buffaloman_R Hello, buffaloman_R

Smile I am both, much like all the replies I have read here, overjoyed that J would be willing to give up alot of royalities to do the "independant thing" with his future material & a little skeptical that the protection of this material released on the internet would be possible Smile.Confused Well, I being of the 1st generation of Jamiroquai Fans from the early 90s to collect all the CDs, a future endeavor of a DIGITAL release of future Jamiroquai material is a bit of a culture shock Confused . But, hehe, Brother Samiroquai, ever since the beginning, I think most of us elder fans have HAD to have a large pile of CD-Rs containing the most important demos and music of Jamiroquai, I know I still have one, but fans have to update their own libraries of this material, such as incorporating them on Data CDs as a backup. But, for creative freedom, even if giving the WIDE and neverending distribution of a record label, definitely outweighs that aspect, and it is good to see JK is willing to do something new to get the new material out there. Though, the internet is a fickled affair, I mean, say by example they release a new album of material about 2-3 years after the 2007 Greatest Hits Tour, there's always that chance of it being available for illegal download BEFORE it goes for legit pay download. But on the same coin of thought, there would be a MAJOR reduction in Jamiroquai music leaks cause they are OFF LABEL, where about 90% of new music is leaked through CD promos and online audio streams. But, once we fans have a public confirmation of this, we support and protect Jamiroquai's music whereever and whenever we can. As for all the collectible items, single and albums, well, I have seen more "selling" than "collecting" of them between fans, so, it's a question of what you "need" than what can you "get" to remind yourself of those days. Thanks for listening and Peace!

Sincerely,
JamiroFan2000

Yes, for bootlegs, demos etc. which haven't had official releases, that's perfectly understandable. Silver bootlegs aren't exactly easy to find, after all... but for officially released albums? Not quite the same thing really, is it? Rolling Eyes

Huge Labels are on there way out. With such huge overhead, and trying to satisfy a now intensley diviersified music markey, huge corps won't be able to cater to everyones needs. Indie (independent) labels, however, can cater to a much specific area of music and are going to finally get there voices heard.

The point is, is that no one needs a label. You can start your own music publishing company (what Jay is doing) and then talk to bigger/better labels and work out a deal for distribution. It keeps pressure off the artists, but lets them make a living still which is fantastic and my goal someday. If you don't believe me, start reading some music business books like "Making Music, Making Money." It'll cast away all doubts.

I'd like to see Jamiroquai move to a respected Indie label like Brownswood - the new one set up by Gilles Peterson. I could see them really fitting into a label like that, especially if they are to draw more on the 'old school' sound in the future.
Btw - Gillles Peterson was one of the founders of Acid Jazz records along with Eddie Pillar. I'd love to hear what rare early Jamiroquai nuggets that man has in his collection.

Anyway, its not like that will actually happen, I just think it would be pretty cool.

Cool I think that Jay and the gang are obviously just taking a much needed break....
and they probably aren't going to crank a whole entire albums worth of new tunes....

but rather a smaller number of higher quality, longer extened unadulterated killer funk.......
that he has been talking about in his recent interviews.....that's why he won't really need to even have a major distributer ....'cause it's like the two new tracks on HT singles...'Runaway' and 'Radio'

which were "off the cuff" as Jay said............maybe one or two tracks every so often....I think they have done so well already with album sales worldwide......

Wink in the last podcast Jay says "that's it, I'm done"

so I don't think we will see a full - length album anytime soon. sad.

I am a die hard collector too. but there is always direct CD full color printing, lightscribe, and basically digital downloads is the way everything is going (not that I like it either, but) future

Be thankful that Jamiroquai have released so many full albums already. Also, so many live performances that we have enjoyed. We really have been spoilt. Most bands do not get past 2 albums.

With full albums, there is pressure to complete the album by a certain time, and certain number of tracks, certain length and a mixture of styles (up-tempo, ballads, etc...), plus there must be some radio-friendly stuff. This leads to tracks sounding unfinished, rushed or out of place, or toned down. So not releasing albums may improve things, you'll never know.

I respect any decison J Kay makes on this issue. He has managed to deal with his entire original band line-up leaving. I am sure he can deal with this too.

As long as we still get to hear complete unrestricted new stuff, I am happy however I get it.

Colombia is just one of the cogs that make up the Sony machine...
This label switch happened before Dynamite was released if I remember right. So its not so relevant as far as a post-Sony-contract thing goes.
