I heard the solo, and I must say I was really impressed by his playing Shocked Especially the fact that he did that with just 2 years of training behind him. But I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't have changed anything if he was still in Jamiroquai.
Toby smith was the one doing most of the bassline in the first albums, and he was also the one with Jay giving this direction for the band in the first albums, and... We know how Synkronyzed/Afo are, far from acid jazz Wink

Synkronized and AFO are coolest albums!!!!
Jay and Toby have unique vision of music and perfect taste in oldschool sound. Whatever style of music Toby & J used to write together - funk, soul, jazz fusion, disco, classic, latin etc it was always very deep, special, exclusive and genious; both in music ideas, in sound, and in the way of performing.
First of all, it was real art, not showbusiness. For me everything Jay and Toby have done together is the highest degree of art!!!!!!
Their music make me feel better than anything else.. from all the music i only love Marvin Gaye as much as J and Toby.
after listening to these guys its hard to listen to any other performers and bands. They were too high!!!!!
Jay and Toby are the coolest musicians in the world, each track they've made is a masterpiece.

i think if you can play bass you'll understand that usual bassists can't generate and play the things Stu did. He is genious, first of all even not in the level of playing but in the level of creating outstanding beautiful bass lines and grooves. i think this is what jamirokaki is speaking about comparing him to Marcus Miller.
Paul Turner plays differnt way, but he is also cool. he
does amazing fantastic things both live and on record... he is very special bassist, he is also not like other thousands of profesionals. he has perfect taste, style and creates outstanding wonderful grooves. i am happy he joined the band!!!!

i believe basslines could be credited to toby, Jay and Stu for the first 2 albums, depending of the song.
well you can ask directly to mr Zender in his myspace (or talk with SZ experts like Simon merrick).
Stu was unhappy about the credits of the songs so that's the better way to really know.

Never said that Afo and Dynamite were weak, I really like those albums Wink I was just pointing out that those 2 albums were not acid jazz.
Personally it was not a problem for me. When I listen a band's album with a different concept that the others , I won't try to do comparison with the first albums, because I already know they weren't trying to improve the music from their first cds, they were trying to do something different Cool

Cool There simply is no comparison to Stu's bass playing to anyone who plays funk/acid jazz ......

it was not just his playing it was his "tone" and feel.........

and now that Nick has left the band and I have given Paul a good listen,

I really think Nick was pretty darn good considering the shoes he was trying to fill.

He defenitly was a little boring at times....and he couldn't play Light Years to save his life....but I think he was technically a little bit sharper than Paul.

that being said, the reason I think Paul isn't my favorite, is that his tone is too high and "tinny" sounding.....

Yes you can replace the bass player in your band with someone else, but I think where Jay failed is not only getting rid of Stu, but not replacing him with someone better............then him.

Also the solo that Paul tries to pul off on "f I Like It I Do It"...is just mostly "fluff" and kind of annoying really......I mean if they (the band) are going to give him a solo,it should be a solo. not some Jamming wanna be thing that they do on that song.

sorry it's just my opinion and most of you who aren't musicians arent really going notice it or think anything of it but as a musician and bass player myself I would have to say that .......don't get me wrong Paul is ok, a nice guy even, but they really need to get somebody in there that can really fill Stu's shoes......

or better yet ...get him back! REUNION......DREAM TEAM......OG.......

come on Jay..........bring back the old school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i'm not agree...mostyl in everytihng you said.
nick sharper than paul? if that means that nick need 2 seconds to change from string to other, and give the next note, yes, it sounds sharper... Rolling Eyes
about if i like it's line...at least on jazz cafe, i just love it.
i'm not musician, but that son't mean i don't have hears.
my brothers are musicians (also bassplayer) and most of my friends are too, i live sorrounded by music and bass is one of the instruments i put more attention on.

Can you explain what you mean here?

I do understand what you are saying as well It's really not a consideration to even be comparing these bass players with one another...

(the post of this original message is really absurd!!!!)

Don't see how it's absurd to compare those guys. They play the same instrument folks. It's not like we were comparing Derrick Mc Kenzie and Dj D-Zire Confused
And fans should "forget" Stuart's bassplaying. It was his playing. if Jay forced Paul to play like Stuart, it would mean that they're doing music just for their fans, so just for commercial means.
Seriously Stuart will never come back in Jamiroquai, he was the one deciding to leave the band, Jay didn't fire him :/
