I don't know if he's loosing his voice, surely if mine had that value I would take care of mine!
But I was thinking..that we should also consider the age...and that he's doing this since he was very young ( infact often his voice was exchanged x a woman's voice)...now he's a mature man..than x sure he has a deeper sound.
but anyway ...that "i'm a FREEEE man" in Runaway is painfull live!

I think that the 97 tour is also a big factor. This year, they had done more than 100 concerts... So add to this the drugs+ alcohol.... :/ |

No camon, not that he's changing his voice now, but that with time and age the voice change naturally, or not?
And also the fact that he worket a lot with it ...I don't know if it's something that get ruined is used too much, but a little bit it should effect!

I've thought about this a lot - it's definitely the 97 tour, as mentioned before + cocaine + chain smoking. At the beginning of the tour, his voice was flawless more or less (though thinner than EOPE and ROTSC) but by the end he could not hit high notes and his voice would suddenly cut off in songs like Virtual Insanity, Alright. Stress, lack of rest, and constant performances + heavy cocaine use were to blame.
On Synkronized, his voice is pretty good, though it had become a little thinner and raspier. By 2001 his voice was quite a bit different, but still recognizable as his own. By the end of the AFO tour, his voice was completely trashed, especially by 2002-2003 (check the Pori Jazz Festival 2003 bootleg, or Montreux) . I think he had a series of throat infections at the time that could have left his voice completely damaged if he didn't take a break. 2005's Dynamite features a Jay Kay sans his instantly recognizable timbre and an album that was overproduced to compensate(?) for the lack of his vocal abilities that used to drive the melodies. His voice has gone from an effective 3 octave range to about 1 octave or less.
Quitting cocaine was probably the result of his realization that his voice was quickly going and was a move to save his career. I think that laser treatments to his vocal cords will do him well - there are probably numerous lesions which prevent the flaps from vibrating smoothly, though this will never restore his voice. He should consult an ENT physician for evaluation if he cares about singing for the next 10 years.
I guess the take home message is that some people are irresponsible with a great gift and power. A voice as original as Jay's comes around once in a hundred years and now it's gone  |

I actually enjoy listening the 'raspier' Jay, but in the recordings ('Radio' being my best example), not so much live, he doesn't sound as good as in 94 or 99.
