i got the impression he is singing a bit about being disappointed about the human race . when i hear the rock dust light star chorus i see a big star flying in direction earth who is gonna destroy us all...
salvation coming from on high...the rock dust light star?
only when we are all dead we are all save
this is maybe totally misunderstood and mainly coming from my fantasy ..
actually reading my text now ..that would be a bit too dark for jamiroquai haha |
I get this same sort of feeling. For me there are some dark, almost fatalistic things going on with the words in these lyrics. On the surface it seems to be another one of those "where do I fit in / no-one understands me" kind of songs, but then the undercurrent has these quasi-apocalyptic themes as Sandra has mentioned. You can throw a bit of Carl Sagan in there too... "we ourselves are made of startdust..." etc, etc.
There's also that fascination we know Jay has with all things Mayan/Aztec. If I'm not mistaken, doesn't the Mayan calendar "run out" around 2012 or something like that...
Just a thought.
Javis, I'm pretty sure the title of the song means exactly what it is. A refernce in some way to the building blocks of the universe. |
Yeah yeah, it's gotta alot of that too, 'unoptimistic unsure future of the human race finding it's own small niche' in the world whilest Carl Sagan & Steven Hawkins stare over us intently like some nerdy godlike overseers moving around humanity after a skillful roll of the 45 sided dice on a oblong world map of chesslike uncertainly and cackling with manic laughter' ..... ...whoa I got all like 'zenlike' there N' stuff... ....Neat! These lyrics really do show a prose growth in JK in the 'musical imagery' of the new material, which is refreshing, but I hope he can maintain this with the other new songs . But my comical side still is bumping me in the shoulder, telling me that is all STILL about some 'sexy comet bound around the moon' . Cheers!
Sincerely,

Haha, on second thoughts, a sexy comet having a liaison with the moon sounds like a much better idea! _________________

After listening to it for few times , just some food for thought (heavy though):
"What you made, and what you are, Rock,Dust,Light,Star -and-
Coming at you baby, 36,000 miles an hour"
Meaning / influenced by ? Armageddon ? Meteor ?
How about the text of the common burial prayer:
"we therefore commit his body to the ground; earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust."
Greetings from David B.
Ashes to ashes, funk to funky

About the new tune, "rock dust light star":
I´m a bit disapointed, I think it is very vulgar, and I don´t see in anyway the return of the old sounds as promised by several members of the band. Yes, it may be a lot better than the crap we hear today on the radio, but hey, inside this heavily polluted industry that isn´t hard to do is it?
I don´t feel nothing special about this tune, it has no essence, just an ordinary radio tune like thousands of others. I think Jamiroquai was supposed to do something special, different and soullfull. I find it repetitive, and musically a bit poor, with the exception of the Moog intro (I like the intro sound, but I don´t find it nothing special either).
Hopefully the other tunes will be jazzier and better, maybe Jay designed this tune for the masses and left the rest of the album for true fans (Or maybe not .. And this will be a big dispointment again like Dynamite and AFO )
Cheers to all |

well, i´m not disappointed, to be honest i´m very happy to hear smooth songs like rock dust light star. it was made to relaxing and (why not?) reflect about our life. cause the greatest lyrics are not obvious!
when i listened it for the first time, i remember bands as u2 and red hot chili peppers! but i´m sure the album will be diferent of rdls...
if you don´t liked that music, don´t worry! remember: you don´t choose music, the music choose you! _________________

I'm deeply sorry to say that, but I completely agree with Vintage73.
I'm just trying to get into Jay's mind and think why he picked that tune as the very first track to perform out of the new album. Did he choose it 'cause it suited the flow of the gig? Does he find a commercial potential in it?
I just hope he doesn't believe it's one of the best bits on the album, because i find it dull, a so-called 'filler'.
Sorry again for bringing negative vibes in here, if I wasn't a big fan I wouldn't be here complaining. And of course I'm still trustful about the rest of the output. |

Agree - would be good as a Red Hot Chili Peppers song, but this is Jamiroquai we're talking about. |

Hmm
I saw something that meike posted before and i found it very interesting.
She said that the song must grow on you...
It's weird because, talking about Jamiroquai, we're used to be in awe when we listen to a really good tune of them. The true good tunes never had to grow on us, it was all about listening it once, and being like "oh damn " And then you will just listen to it over and over and over, until you get addicted.
But that's not the case with this song, for me it is just an... ordinary song, pretty but confused lyrics, with a reasonably well crafted melody. Light years away (in a good sense) from the music we listen today in the radio today. But still, is not up to par with the Jamiroquai level of quality that we know so well.

iranterres...whats a TRUE good tunes..
it´s a very personal thing which song u like and clarify as " TRUELY GOOD"
i have to admit when i bought the Travelling without moving album...i SKIPPED the tune" travelling without moving"....with the time it started growing on me ...
if a song hits u at that firs moment depends a lot on which musicstyle u like best i think..if u more from the acid jazz corner only u´d probably won´t get captivated too much from this first impression.
people who also enjoy songs from AFO or DYN propably are happy with this kind of tune either.
personally i dislike clarifying tunes as TRUELY GOOD or TRUELY BAD...
it´s always our personal taste that will judge a tune.
if u are talking about music structure , chord progression or lyrics you can say that tunes are maybe built more complicated, complex or lyrics are more meaningful and deep or just entertaining.
do u know those quotes of people who listen jazz only and say that all that pop stuff is nonsense and jazz is the only truely way to make music...( as an extreme example)...some could come across as a bit snobby.
there would be people saying classic is rubbish and boring...or heavy metal is great, or country music is stupid and so are all the people who are listening to it.
everybody can listen what they want nowadays, thats the good news.
nobody is FORCED to like a tune either...
i am happy i can enjoy a varity of music styles...from classic to spanish music, funk, jazz and also some stuff from the pop and rock genre...
i dont´know if i made my point with this post.
just enjoy the music everyone and if not , listen to something else!
xxxx

I totally agree with sandriche about music taste. I didn't care for quite a few jamiroquai songs when I first heard them, but now those very songs are some of my favorites. |

Don´t get things too personal, yeah I should have said something like "acid jazz fans" instead of "true fans", sorry about that...
Of course I agree with you all, it´s all a matter of taste, everyone has its own .. I just expressed mine! I didn´t liked AFO and Dynamite at all, not a single tune of them, and I´m addicted on the first four albums, which I think are more soulfull, have a better vibe and instrumentality .. but thats my opinion ! .. I am not trying to say this is better than that .. It´s all relative!
For example, for me JMQ lost its essence somewhere at 2000, for others it was just a good change in the sound. Good for them !..
But what you have to agree with me though, is that this tune is definitely far away from the older sounds .. It sucks for fans like me because we waited so long with such a high expectations that turned false.. And in the end we probably got another Dynamite
As for others, I hope you enjoy the next album .. For me I just don´t think so. Jamiroquai was almost a closed chapter, but this is definitely the end of it..
Still, I´m glad I found some new fresh acts to compensate the loss,
Cheers to all |
