Two weeks ago I found that version of What's Going On on Youtube where Marvin performs the song with James Jamerson.

I always loved Marvin's art, especially the album What's Going On, but this performance touched me even deeper. Last week I put my Montreux '80 dvd into the dvd player and discovered such tracks (like After The Dance) I didn't pay attention before, so I downloaded the whole Marvin Gaye discography and now hooked up on I Want You album (and especially on Come Live With Me Angel) for days now, this masterpiece is so addictive, so sexual, so silky that words are not enough to express. For me this is the best Marvin track from now!

WOW what a long on-going thread already....thanks for the comments and the initial first posting.....I knew a lot about Marvin but not to that great extent.
I have always enjoyed Marvin Gaye's music. I have three full CD's and 1 record on vinyl.
1) Greatest Hits
2) Sexual Healing
3) The Final Concert
Tracks from Late Night tales and Funkology Vol. 1
and
1) What's Going On? - Vinyl
I think that a lot of people like him but it may just be the stigma of his name "Gaye" that people don't like to say.....unless you are really into him or a musician and just don't care.
and Deesh is absolutley right about Motown. Just not really anything there anymore.
I like almost every Marvin Gaye tune. But, I really really like "Joy" which is on the Final Concert CD, it's soooooo funky and has great lyrics ironicly about his Dad!
I covered that song in my band 1 time, and I will always remember that! I also remember the day he was shot, I was young (11) but I remember because i was at my Grandmothers's house and we heard about it on TV.
very very sad. It's unfortunate that he let drugs like cocaine get the best of him. and also his family. But his music strikes a soulful chord whenever you heard it. His voice is like no other, very soothing.
This is a must have for any collector
here I found a cover of Let's Get it On when i was in a cover band called "Vintage Soul"

I play bass and do background vocals.
and mind you this was 8 years ago!!!!! |

Just wanna have your opinion about this: listen to this track from Marvin called Funky Space Reincarnation:

Doesn't it remind you to Light Years (not only the way he says "light years", but the drums and the guitar in some parts... )? |

hi mate
film "remember marvin gaye" includes very rare 29 minute film entitled “Marvin Gaye Transit Ostend”, its writer and director
Richard Oliver writes:
| Quote: |
Synopsys
In 1981, Marvin Gaye, the all time champion of soul music, took refuge in Ostend, a little town located on the Belgian coast. Marvin’s choice to lay anchor in Ostend was totally unexpected, not to say incredible. On the fact of it, there was no reason for this charismatic character to come and live in the home town of famous Belgian impressionistic painter James Ensor.
Marvin nevertheless remained in Ostend for nearly two years. He went back to the States to receive a Grammy Award for his latest album “Sexual Healing”. He died in Los Angeles on 1 April 1984, shot dead at home by his own father, a clergyman. Twenty years after the making of a first 29 minute film entitled “Marvin Gaye Transit Ostend”, I decided to make this second documentary film. It’s my way of bringing to life the picture Marvin Gaye dedicated to me:
“To Richard, From my heart, I thank you for legitimising my artist soul, and above all, I thank you my artist friend for making me immortal”.
Thanks to the use of new technology, unedited rushes and interviews in Ostend of this great American singer were used to make “Remember Marvin Gaye” a poignant and exceptional testimony on this genius of Rhythm and Blues music, who died tragically at the age of 44. |
heres the film
