Ok - so I posted this response to a similar thread on the Stuart Zender forum.

Please let me preface this by saying that I am:

1. A Jamiroquai fan since 1993
2. A bass player
3. Heavily influenced by Zender and have the utmost respect for his playing

Alright, so here's my post:

I think this has been blown out of proportion.

Jamiroquai is a band, and like any band, they may be subject to lineup changes. Over time that band has created music, or products, under the 'brand' Jamiroquai. Now WE all know who was around and who did what, way back when; however the majority of people don't have a clue. They know Jamiroquai, the band — as long as they see JK up the front they don't really care too much about who's playing at the back. We're in the minority, folks.

Consider other brands, as an example. I'm sure people from Apple Inc have come and gone, have had their part in the design of the iMac, or iPod, etc; should they be pissed because it's represented under the Apple name and not their own?

Any member of any band would have to be a little naive to think they are bigger than the band itself. That's called EGO, and is often why people get turfed in the first place.

As for all these comments about the band (as it is today) playing tracks they did not write — the advertisement simply says:

"Come and check out the band that delivered 6 multi-platinum albums, 5 MTV awards, a Grammy and an Ivor Novello."

and

"Hear them perform famous Jamiroquai tracks, and reveal the secrets of how they perform as a unit"

Ok. So last time I checked, these guys ARE Jamiroquai, right? They have been for the last 3 years or so.

And, like the advertisement suggests — they DO perform famous Jamiroquai tracks.

I think it would also be safe to say they DO work as a unit. I mean, after all, they have been Jamiroquai for a while now, have performed a lot of famous Jamiroquai songs together... I'd say they're a tight unit indeed (can you see where I'm going with this?).

False advertising? Bah! Consider that the majority of people know Jamiroquai to be JK; how can you blame the advertiser? What would you like them to say — do you want to see a breakdown of every band member, when they joined, their writing and production credits, etc? Who cares?

It's not clever marketing — it simply states fact. This is Jamiroquai, and you can come and see them perform tracks. Now if we could jump in our DeLorean time machine like Marty McFly and warp back to good ol' '97, things might be a little different. That's 11 years ago, and like it not, the times they are-a-changin'.

Now as for pointing the finger at guys like Derrick, Rob and Paul:

Let's not forget Derrick joined after EOPE. Should he be forbidden from playing 'Too Young To Die'? The live version never sounds like the recorded version... Derrick's been developing that song since '94. One could argue that he has more ownership of it than Nick Van Gelder. Do you think Nick's pissed? Doubt it.

The music has evolved, arrangements aren't the same. Rob has had a lot of influence in the direction of the music; and I believe Paul has also. JK ultimately steers the direction of the ship — and why shouldn't he? It's his band.

And to berate Paul and his ability is laughable. I'm sorry, but you don't get hired for artists like Annie Lennox, George Michael and Jamiroquai if you're crap! And believe me, Paul is far too nice a guy (and devoid of EGO) to take advantage of a situation like this. He's doing is job, and doing it well, and any of you that have seen him play live and met him in person can attest to that.

To be honest, if I was one of the original writers in the band — I would not feel pissed. I wouldn't have any reason, or any right to, unless I had a massive ego that needed some stroking.

Maybe I'd feel disappointed that I wasn't still in the band, but I'd have to ask myself WHY rather than blame those who have continued in my place. I've replaced people in bands, and been replaced by people, and there's never been any animosity. It is what it is, and you move on. I think that's what needs to happen here... there's a lot of holding on to the past and I just don't see the value in it.

Now, if this is about Stuart specifically — surely he's got enough good things going on in his life (Mark Ronson tours, Warwick endorsements) that he shouldn't be concerned about a band he left 11 years ago?

Cheers

Lex

No, not - Lex 1, Jamirotalk 0
The rest of Jamirotalk are agreeing with Lex on this one - there was only one person who was a bit peeved about the advertising. Everyone else is happy! Smile
