The Jamiroquai Chronology!!
Hello Jamirotalkers,

I was watching that the site almost has 600 registered users, so apart of high congrats to Cosmic Mouse, Cosmic Bear & funkmaster, and to all the Jamily that made it possible, I was thinking that this last months have been of expeculations and a lot of new member joined in and posts a lot lately (and perhaps with the release of the 6th album, hopefully the old members here could come back cause there is a lot of people missing!) I wanted to give a sum up of Jay Kay's facts and info about Jamiroquai, for the ones who are interested in here it goes the Jamiroquai chronology!

-Jason Kay was born on December 30 of 1969 (Capricorn)
-He was born in Stretford, near Manchester.
-He was born in a twin birth, unfortunately his brother died only six weeks later because of heavy brain injury.
-His mother, Karen Kay (whose pictures have been posted short time ago here by mteykay!) was a jazz singer quite famous in '60 and when Jay was younger she took him with her in her worldwide concerts.
-His father is of portuguese origin.
-After he and his mother moved in Ealing- West London he broke up with his mother and ran away from home.
-During that time, he was influenced by hip hop, graffiti, breakdance and for surviving he made a lot of works... and later he pushed to light drugs too.
-He met Wallis Buchanan, a boy from Australia, they enjoyed a lot together running on skate through London streets and then he became his best friend.
-Wallis, as we all know, was a very good didgeridoo player from his homeland (originally called Yiddaki) and Jay liked a lot.
-A little bit older, Jay started to creat music with that hip hop little box rappers use nowadays.
-Jay made a screen test for the Brand New Heavies as singer, but he was rejected.
-So, he decided to create his own band.
-He called his musician friends Stuart Zender, Toby Smith, Nick Van Gelder, Dj D Zire ( ? ) and Wallis.
-Together they started playing and they recorded their first demo 'When You Gonna Learn'.
-They brought it to Kiss FM, and played in through it. So, Acid Jazz executives listened to the song and liked it so much.
-The name for Jamiroquai appears (mixing the Jam from jam music sessions, and Iroquois, and indian tribe that follows the same principles as Jay and that you can read all about it on 'The Origin of Jamiroquai', here in this forum, written by me Very Happy).
-An eight-album deal with Sony puts the release of the first album 'Emergency On Planet Earth'.
-The logo that differences the group, the Buffalo Man (also called Medicine Man), was created by Jay and is the shadow of himself with big heavy horns on his head.
-The meaning of the horns is taken from indians ('Origin Of...').
-Many lyrics of the first album reflected Jay's ideals, nature and people respect.
-Jay was critized too, of copying Stevie Wonder's style (this is still happening!).
-All these critics brought Jay to crisis while writing the second album, to the point that almost risked ending.
-Thanks to manager Al Stone they release 'The Return Of The Space Cowboy' in 1994, featuring Derrick McKenzie for the first time in the band (Jay said that 'Mr Moon' was the first song Derrick played with the band, and that the version we hear on the album is the first take) and enters Sola Akingbola on percussion. Both current band members.
-During this tour, they played several covers including 'Don't Stop (The Feeling)', 'We Gettin Down', among others.
-In 1996 'Travelling Without Moving' sells more than 7 million copies, they won a Grammy, and various MTV Awards, including 'Video of the Year' for Virtual Insanity.
-He lost his driver's licence for six months ('Back to the Future' hahaha).
-During the TWM tour, they played a cover of 'Hollywood Swinging', a Kool And The Gang song, (later recorded on a studio an included on the recent Big Hits release of KatG).
-He gave up a millionaire contract with Pepsi saying 'they can stick their money up..', and he also said that Jamiroquai's music has something sacred and mistic that can't be merged with a cola can (anything to do with Canned Heat featuring a can with the buffalo man on the single cover??).
-They built the 'Chillington Studio' in Buckinghamshire ('it was that or a car', said Jay) at Jay's house. Rick Pope runs Jay's own studio. Construction work on the studio began in January 1998, and was completed in July of that year.
- Kay's initial aim was to build a room that reflected the way he and the band work when they play live.
-The studio has a large live room overlooking the garden, an equally spacious control room and a separate machine room housing, amongst other things, two Studer A827 tape machines. There is a kitchen and bathroom on the ground floor, while the first floor has been turned into offices.
-In 1998 the hit Deeper Underground for the Godzilla movie, put the band at number 1 for the first time in the US.
-In 1999, they have to re-record the 'Synkronized' album, after Stuart Zender's departure and for not having legal problems. Nick Fyffe enters as the new bassman.
-The album was done in a bug hurry.
-'Butterfly' was the last song they made for the album.
-During the Synkronized tour they played a cover of the song 'Miss You', by the Rolling Stones.
-Wallis Buchanan, DJ D-Zire and Simon Katz leave the band.
-Rob Harris enters as the new guitar player. Current member of the band.
-In 2001, they release 'A Funk Odyssey', an album dedicated to Stanley Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey', one of Jay's favorite movies. And more 'disco' orientated.
-Jay said that he made this album with the 'remixing' in mind, after the great success that all the previous remixes had.
-'So Good To Feel Real', a hidden track at the end of 'Picture Of My Life', was done moments later of delivering the album to Sony, and it was made in a single take. What it can be hear on the album is all that exists.
-The Official Jay's site is completely renewed. No big updates to date.
-After the 'Star Wars' premiere, Jay hits a photographer. He goes to court and a part of the 'You Give Me Something' is banned.
-The hats of the AFO concerts costed 10.000 ponds each.
-In 2002 Toby Smith, one of the co-funders of the band, leaves the band in the middle of the tour 'to be with his family'.
-Derrick McKenzie gave a call to Matt Johnson to make the audition. He is the current keyboardist of the band.
-During the AFO tour, they played two unreleased songs, 'Funk Odyssey' and 'Cannabliss' (Jay said they will probably be on the next album). They also played a cover of 'Bad Girls', by Donna Summer.
-In 2002 they release the Live in Verona DVD, a concert recorded at Arena Di Verona, Italy on June 8th, 2002.
-In 2003 they release an album featuring Jay's favorite songs of all time artists on the 'Late Night Tales' series. (By Ultra Records and not Sony).
-In 2003 bassist player Nick Fyffe leaves the band. Alex Meadows enters, now is the current bassman and we are all waiting to hear him!
-During the Montreux Jazz Festival 2003, they played a new song called 'Shoot The Moon'.
-After having the '.co.uk' domain, the Official site has now the '.com' domain. The 'Jamiroquai.com' site was in a time a fan site and was never updated again.
-They have been nominated almost 20 times to the Birt Awards. They never won, I guess. He got on stage with Anastasia, performing 'Bad Girls'.
-The latest rumours: Jay planning to record a big band album just like Robbie Williams did; duet with acress Renèe Zellwegger.
-Jay is banned for speeding and may lose his licence. Goes to court on September this year.
-Writting of the album going from Costa Rica to Scotland; recording from Chillington, LA and New York.
-The sixth album of the band is coming on late 2004.

Hello Jamirotalkers,

Well, thank you all for the nice words, I really appreciate them.
Hehe, yeah Jamirofan, it is a little bit long, but remember that the band was formed almost 15 years ago, sometime between 1989 and 1991, so I had to sum up 15 years of things that happened. And not to mention all the musicians that went in and out!

And EvoV, DJ D Zire actually was with the band in EOPE, thanks for warning me about it, will change that. If Wallis was from Jamaica?, since I took all the information from different sites, I don't know if it is official. But I read in two places that he was from Australia, who knows, maybe I am in fact wrong.

Thanks for correcting that Wink, and if someone else wants to add a comment or anything please don't hesitate.

Bye,
D! (diego)
