The Movie That Inspired 'A Funk Odyssey'
Hello Jamirotalkers,
We never talked about this. Did you see the movie that inspired Jay to make an album called 'A Funk Odyssey'? The 5th album of Jamiroquai is a tribute to Stanley Kubrick for those who didn't know, and the movie is called '2001: A Space Odyssey'.
The movie is excellent, I highly recommend it to all of you. You will get to know why Jay is so fan of space and time... and you kind of feel like that after wathcing it. It is an amazing journey that, if you like Stanley Kubrick's movies, you will defintely like it.
You will get to know why The Blue Danube took part on their AFO concerts, and why it was suposed to be on the album too, but they didn't fit, according to Jay.
Anyway, just a reminder that if you haven't seen this movie, you should right now. A masterpiece I must say.
Hehe... and we are by 2004 now...
PS: This movie pic... something to do with the AFO cover??

Yes, I really love this movie!
The thing that I espcially like is how Stanley created sound of space. WOW
And yes, Jay is really fascinated with space, you can see that everywhere.
I also noticed where Jay got phrase "Travelling Without Moving" from, it's another space movie. I wrote about that in this topic, but it didn't get much attention
Mmmm, I love those cult movies, I could (if I had time) watch them all days! |

rar... I hated 2001 the first time I saw it. Sorry! But I did. Then I studied it at uni and I gained a much higher appreciation for it - the special effects that Kubrick developed for it are truly amazing. I can't say that I "enjoy" the film, but I certainly do appreciate it now. It takes a lot of concentration to watch it. In the screening at uni half the audience fell asleep. _________________

I bought the DVD 3 months ago and I still watch it completely.
Sometimes I got bored or felt asleep.
The movie is awesome, if you think, it's from 1968!
but is quite boring... |

this is a difficult watch at times, but nothing beats that intro and that mind blowing transition from the bone to the space ship.
movies about space are cool..a bit OT but the new Star Wars sequel is coming up! Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. see the trailer here:

Hello there,
Well yes that is true aYa, you can't watch it an afternoon with friends of course.
I like to watch this kind of movies very late, when everybody's gone to sleep. I put my headphones (volume 100%) and I watch it eating chips with Coke Ahhh... those nights are the best ones! Specially when the movies are the ones you have to think a lot.

Hi Diego, be careful with those 100% volume (brain damage.. ).
nice idea this late-watching..I know what you mean. I recognise those rare moments..when you are "the center" and solitude is good. |

2001 is rated G (General Audiences) and yet I think it is one of the scarier movies I've ever seen. No violence, no bad language, nothing to make it not for all audiences... but I can't watch it alone. It's so creepy. |

Hi Freddie,
I agree with you. Is kind of creepy, but you know what is it? The music. Those 'ahhhhhhhuoooooohhhhhhhuuuuu' and the screams. If you see all Stanley Kubrick's movies, you'll realize that the music is very important, and is what makes it so frightening.
For example (I don't wanna go offtopic -still talking about 2001) in 'The Shining' (with Jack Nicholson- 1980), when the kid is through the hotel, and the two girls appear:
The music and the scary images makes movies even more 'horror'.
'Just another wasted birth?'

Connections with 2001
Hello Jamirotalkers,
I wanted to revive this old topic cause I keep finding similarities between Jamiroquai and this film! Besides that the cover of AFO looks like some shots in the movie, I've seen the movie again and there's one part where HAL asks David not to disconnect him/her. And he says 'Stop David' 'Stop' 'Stop'... maybe something to do with 'Stop Don't Panic'??
It's also very obvious that in some concerts they "played" the Blue Danube, which is THE musical theme of '2001: A Space Odyssey'.
What the robotic voice says in 'Feel So Good': 'All flights to the Moon, Mars, Jupiter'. Clearly another homage to the movie. And, well, title track 'Twenty Zero One'.
I'm also reading a very interesting (and long) explanation about the movie and it makes a detailed vision about the whole picture. For example, for the ones who saw the movie, it says: "there are five birthdays in the film (in order): (1) the Dawn of Man himself; (2) Dr. Floyd's daughter; (3) Astronaut Frank (his parents sing him Happy Birthday via radio); (4) computer HAL's "operational" birthday; (5) the Birth of the Starchild." Another connection with Jamiroquai! It says exactly like that, 'Starchild'! I found it in another website too ( http://www.indelibleinc.com/kubrick/films/2001/ click on Images, and the last one it is).
OK. I may see that movie again.. did you find any other connection?

i already talk about the relation with jami and kubrick in another thread, i tihnk it's on tune stories one.
2001 a space odyssey it's Jay's favorite movie, and Stuart Zender's one too.
appart from the title name of a funk odyssey, and the blue danube interlude, the first interlude it's also a kind of reproduction of HAL 9000 talking, i also noticed the starchild thing, the first time i saw that one of the names of the forthcoming album was to be starchild (theres aslo a topic about this song where i talk about this).
and about connection with kubrick, theres a scene on a orange clockwork movie wich is exactly like a scene on canned heat video (see the film and you will recognize)
p.s. it's funny 'cos just today i started to see 2010 odyssey 2, the second part of the film, i didn't have time to see it, but i'm diyng to see it, i think theres a 3rd part too. the part one (a space odyssey) it's an incredible awesome movie, i remember when i was very young, just a child i always get asleep looking at the monkeys of the beggining...lol.
p.s.2 i mentioned this million times but i think everyone must see this site

Hi again,
Yeah, I remember all those topics. In fact, I saw 'Clockwork Orange' last year I think, but it was on VHS, horrible. I'm planning to rent the DVD, I remember that part of the Canned Heat video.
I became more interested in A Space Odyssey cause I've been searching detailed reviews where they talk about everything. All in the movie is there for a reason, is very well thought. Everything has is own interpretation... I believe that a movie is good when you need to see it more than just one time.
And, besides, is from 1969 and they predicted things from our era, for example the wide screens.
I think tonight I'm gonna see it again
