Ellis Marsalis dies
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/arts...alisobit23.html
I don't think he was a musician, but pretty much the rest of his family was. He was the dad of Ellis Marsalis Jr., who was a very famous jazz pianist. Ellis Jr. being the father of Trumpter Wynton Marsalis, Brandford Marsalis (Sax), Delfeyao (Trombone), and Jason (drums). All highly respected musicians. Wynton is keeping the New Orleans jazz alive single handedly. |

Wynton Marsalis is very good. I have a couple of his cds, because I saw a performance of his on PBS back in the late '90s called live at Lincol Center or something like that. I was so impressed that I bought a couple of his cds, but it's always tough to choose which one because he's got about a million of them out. I pop them in a lot when Im tryin to get homework done though. Good concentration/wind-down music. Any suggestions in which ones you like the best Phil?
P.S. Branford was so stupid for leaving as the band leader of the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. You can't pass up a steady gig like that, and the publicity that accompanies it. _________________ Wouldn't 'ya like... To walk the sunny avenues of life? |

Hey Jaminneapolis,
You're right, Wynton does have a ton of CDs. Sorta hard to find the 'right one' but as for my personal favorite it would be Standard Time Volume 2 - Intimacy Calling. Just a really excellent CD. As for his classical work I enjoyed his standard classic album which covers basics, the CD is titled "Classical Wynton." Hey, maybe one day I'll be able to play Le Carnival De Venise half as well as he does. His album 'Baroque Music for Trumpets' is rather impressive since he played all of the trumpet parts himself. Due to all of the scheduling conflicts with other performers Wynton said he'd do multitrack recordings. (He played 8 tracks in Heinrich Von Biber!) |
