'Supersonic'... bad choice for second single?
Hello Jamirotalkers,
I've been thinking about this a long time ago, but I never really talked about it in here.
Since 'Canned Heat' showed up everywhere, people said that Synkronized was going to be their most successful album. And that actually happened (I mean, good sales during the promotion of the CD with 'CH') until they released 'Supersonic' as the 2nd single.
Do you think 'Supersonic' was a bad choice for the second single off Synkronized? Maybe people was not prepared to hear a didgeridoo/ electronic mix from Jamiroquai?
I think sales of Synkronized went down when Supersonic was released, what do you think about it??

PS: I think 'Supersonic' is awesome, made me fall in love with JMQ -just a note - |

Interesting question....
I must admit I don't know the sales figures...so I can not judge from that point...but for me I needed a long time to get used to Supersonic, always skipped it at first although meanwhile it is one of my favourite songs...
But in the whole it might have been better to release that song not as a single...and may be King for a day not too. Great song with a special history but not my first choice for a single. But this is only my private opinion _________________

it may have been a bad move because it definitely doesn't sound like your conventional pop song, so it's something which the general music audience might not be prepared or eager to embrace. i myself had to give myself a few listens to it before i started getting into the groove of the song. not to say it's a bad song, it is really really wicked. it was just a very risky marketing move to push it into the commercial arena, and i nevertheless admire that attempt of pushing the boundaries of what's considered radio-friendly. |

I agree it's cool they were trying to push the limits. But I don't think it was a good single. The singles should've been
Canned Heat
Black Capricorn Day
Soul Education
Where Do We Go From Here?
then
FALLING
BUTTERFLY or
KING FOR A DAY
King for a Day isn't a bad single really, but I think the mainstream needs to get used to Jamiroquai with the dancy fun stuff first, and when they buy the album then they come to love the other more offbeat stuff. That's just what I think. Supersonic doesn't really have lyrics much, and it's just not something people can sing along to on the radio, and if that's the case, people are gonna change the channel.
Peace. |

Hello Jamirotalkers,
Hey Cheeeba Lover, I asked that some time ago: http://www.jamirotalk.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=940, with only one reply
I must agree, maybe 'Soul Education' may've been a choice for the second single. Another thing, 'Supersonic' was the first single featuring the Didgeridoo (without counting WYGL ---> only at the beginning and in the middle ---> but here in the whole song).

That's true. But maybe it was a way of saying 'see? we don't sound the same as everybody! we do different stuff', and it could have been a big success. I mean, there was not a medium status, it was 'the best song' or the worst one.
But let's face it, the video was grrreatt!! And I don't know why, but it should've been more around... I think is one of the best videos they've made so far.

US
Can't say from a U.S. point of view since Jamiroquai isn't as popular as they should be here. I think supersonic is an awesome song. I used to hear it as "background music" for this and that television show, but nothing major. The U.S market I know is very different than overseas too. |

at the time I was very surprised that they would choose Supersonic, but in retrospect I think it was wise. one review I read argued that songs like Planet Home, BCD and Soul Education were all good, but almost too 'surefire'--with lyrics not distant from those of earlier songs. (musically I found Derrick's midi-kit drums in PH an interesting new twist, but that's another story). Supersonic was definitely an adventurous choice compared to earlier singles, but I think it earned the band more respect than some other songs may have. _________________ i left my funk in san francisco

I was still in middle school when Canned Heat arrived, and I loved it. But later on, I read that the single had stopped the album cold in its tracks here in America....to all the review people, it was too disco, and in America, disco is dead; the people that enjoy keep it to themselves, at least that's what my friends do.
Diego, are you sure Supersonic was the second single. I think we got Black Capricorn Day as the second single over here. But I could be wrong....as I remember it, I haven't heard Jamiroquai on U.S. radio since Canned Heat.
As far as singles go, I would have put Planet Home as the lead single. I would then put Falling, Supersonic, and Canned Heat as the 2, 3, and 4s. CH gets a bum rap, but even as a little kid, I knew disco didn't fly on top-40 stations in St. Louis for a reason. Save it for the end, when all the platinum's come in. Anyways, back on topic...I absolutely love Supersonic as a song and a video. Jam had serious cojones bringing in something that dark and using the didge as a lead instrument. That being said, it bombed. I think that it crashed in at No. 22 on the UK charts when it was released....it was a commercial failure. Sad to see Wallis go the way of the wind after that. _________________ "...I feel that Jamiroquai needs to be taken to another stage now. It really does. Hello Jamirotalkers,
Hey Supersonic1, 'Black Capricorn Day' was only ever officially released as a single in Japan. It was intended for the single to be released in the UK as well but apparently Jay wasn't happy with the "direction" of the track and thus was never released, even though a good video was shot for the track (People here in Arg doesn't even know there's a video for this song, they never played it on MTV or Much).
'Supersonic' was the second single out of Synkronized and it was in stores on 13 September 1999.
There's also a promotional CD with 'Soul Education' in France. Honestly, I don't know why so many different releases dates and countries
Thanks to The Funkin Site for this info.

Thanks Diego....I remember getting Synkronized and the sticker on the front promoted Canned Heat and Black Capricorn Day. That's where I got my guess from. _________________ "...I feel that Jamiroquai needs to be taken to another stage now. It really does. Yeah I remember that sticker too.
I think the discussion about Canned Heat being too disco is an interesting one. I suppose Jamiroquai was really just ahead of their time for the return of disco. Because now all the big pop stars (Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears) are recording disco tracks, and they get lots of airplay. And I've noticed that AFO gets quoted quite a bit on VH1 countdown shows, etc. |

Yes Disco is not as dead as US radio would have us believe. There's a strong under current outside the US radio that's playing disco. Go to any well established club (ie The Roxy, Mercury Bar, Avalon,Aria... for here in Boston, MA) and the Djs are constantly mixing in disco and I'm sure that's the same in most clubs around the US. As for the second single. I would've liked to have seen Soul Education released before Supersonic. _________________ I used to worry about the future
