JMQ Concert Review - Tuesday 5 September 1995
hello fellow funksters.
while i was surfing the net i stumbled upon this review of a Jamiroquai concert performed on 5/9/95 in downtown boston. unabridged review as follows:

Waaddduupppp?!
Ok, continuing the Kevin Bacon game (in order to "justify" this posting), I'll
state that The Henpecked Horns (John Thirkell and Gary Barnacle, a several-
album studio horn section for Level 42) were featured on Jamiroquai's first
album, "Emergency on Planet Earth." Anyways...
So I saw Jamiroquai at Axis Nightclub on Lansdowne St. in Boston, MA this past
Tuesday. I've been thinking pretty hard about it since then, and I honestly
can't think of a better show that I've seem. In brief, they were flat out
amazing.
They played a show of about 13 songs, featuring their standard drummer,
guitarist, keyboardist, bassist (yes, he was great), digeridooist and of course
Mr. Jay Kay himself. Also on tour is a three-piece horn section (flute/sax,
trumpet and trombone) that was great, a percussionist and also a very talented
DJ that scratched throughout the show. Curiously, there were numerous flute,
sax and trumpet solos, but not really much of any keyboard, bass or guitar
solos. The first encore was a lengthy digeridoo and turntable/scratch solo
that was also pretty unique. I had never seen a DJ playing with a band - or
not at least with one as talented and "legit" as Jamiroquai. I have to admit
that it added a unique and positive element that raised the level of the
performance.
All of their songs live were pretty similar to studio versions - or at least
nothing really outlandishly different. They were really outstanding, however,
in their performance. The band was altogether tight and coherent, with
consistently good bridges between songs. There was also quite a bit of
clowning around on stage, which included JK dancing about randomly, chatting
with the audience, and even letting three girls from the audience attempt
to sing an entire song (I forgot which one - they were terrible!) Maybe it
was because we were *right* up front, but I felt like this was a very
"personable" show - one where the audience communicated with and felt close to
the band on stage. Jamiroquai seem to have alot of support in Boston (the
show sold out), and JK thanked the audience at the end of the show
for being so enthusiastic. He also mentioned that they haven't had all that
great of a response in other areas (of the U.S., I gather), and thus it was
particularly appreciated.
And in response to Elson's comment from digest 14:
> [...] I heard from many people that Jamiroquai sucks in concert.
> One guy said that the sound mix was lousy and some others attribute it to
> the fact that Jason Kay likes to get stoned before every gig. I heard their
> didgeridoo player gets more applause than him.
Well it is definitely the case that JK, as well as most of the Jamiroquai,
likes to get stoned. Whether or not he did before the show I don't
know, but they passed around a joint _during_ the gig. In fact, they even
appealed to the audience for "donations" stating that they had "run out of
weed" (and I think there were a number of people that ended up being
"charitable"). While I *don't* think the Level 42 List is the forum to discuss
drugs or their effect on musical performance, I will state that I don't think
it impaired this band's ability to put on a smokin' show (no pun intended).
Without reservation, I would recommended seeing these guys in concert. I also
have to admit that, while it would be a terrible travesty, it is conceivable
that Jamiroquai's fate in the U.S. will follow Level 42's. Does anyone have
any empirical evidence of their popularity here? Hopefully this won't be
their first and last U.S. tour!!! (But if it is, at least I saw 'em!!!)
Anyways, I certainly got my $14 worth - I would have paid twice that if I
knew how good they were going to be.

I know I'm not KMack, but put me down as a Boston hopeful....
Hopefully, they'll come back around here....and hopefully, people will remember them! _________________ "...I feel that Jamiroquai needs to be taken to another stage now. It really does.
