The Festival Tour: ROCK AM RING & ROCK IM PARK – reviews
1500 kilometers, no gasstation and an emergency room - the festival tour
hi guys,
we are finally back from our trip to Rock-Am-Ring and Rock-Im-Park.
It was quite an interessting trip - in good and bad ways!!! here is the entire story!
Saturday, 9.00 am
0 km
yeah-heah, alright, jamiroquai is playing tonight! on my way to cosmicmouse to pick her up!
the sun is shining, and even though the weatherforcast keeps telling, that there will be rain and even thunderstorms during the afternoon, i hope, the weather will stay that way.
12.00 am
50 km
okay, i have picked up cosmicmouse and everything else we need for our trip across germany. we are finally on our way to the Nürburgring. Jamiroquai is playing on the cd-player and we are having a great time.
2.30 pm
520 km
oh great, it rains like crazy. i guess, the forcast were right after all. damn it!
3.00 pm
560 km
we are finally there! after looking for a place to park for quite some time, we are finally on our way to the stadium. the area surrounding the nürburgring looks like a bomb has hit it. there is trash basily EVERYWHERE. people have set up their tents all over the place. right next to the street, in the woods, everywhere. and their are drunk people everywhere. why do people spend money to go to a concert and then drink so much, that they are not able to recognize their own mother is beyond me. but well, that's there problem. we just have to be careful not to drive over them.
3.30 pm
inside the stadium. it is still raining.
the first thing i notice, is a guy, who has fallen asleep on the ground. don't catch a cold, guy!
4.30 pm
natalie merchant is performing right now. okay, enough time for us to get into the first row, we think. we are moving closer to the main stage, but it is already so crowded that we don't have a chance to make it into the first row. third row seems to be the closest for us. by this time, it starts to rain even harder. at this point my jacket is soaking wet. great!
6.30 pm
Wyclef Jean comes one. the crowd has the greatest time! he's doing a great show.
8.00 pm
finally, the rain has stopped, but everybody is absolutly wet. the guy in front of me smells like a wet sleepingbag. not that i care anymore at this point.
the stage is being set up for jamiroquai. finally! i can see jay for a few moments on the balcony of the vip-building.
a guy behind me is asking his girlfriend "who's next? jamiroquai? who's that?" idiot! if you don't know, what are you doing in the front then? go fifty rows back right now!!!
8.30 pm
here we go!!! the first tunes of the Elvis-Intro come blasting through the speakers. it seems to be the extended version of the song. it's so fantastic!!! (does anybody know if it is available on cd?) the band comes on stage and there is jay. they really put the ROCK into their performance tonight! jay seems to be in a good mood tonight, although he is not dancing this much. probably because of the wet stage. the few times he jumps, you can see, that water is splashing from his shoes.
after the intro, they perform 20-0-1 and go right to Cosmic Girl. solid performance. Jay Kay greets the crowd with the word "i have a connection in my soul to this place! (in case you don't know, the nürburgring is the biggest racing-track in germany) then comes Main Vein. actually, it surprises me, that they play it on stage without beverly knight. the background singer, who has taken her part is going a great job, no question about it, but she is no beverly knight. cosmicmouse and i are jumping up and down and scream. rob notices us, smiles and winks. yeah!!
then they start with the album version of Love Foolosophy, but after a few seconds jay stops the band and they start over again with the accoustic version of the song, just to go back to the album version again after they finished it for the first time. so they basicly play it two times! grrrreat! :spin:
by this time, the crowd is having a great time. actually a bit too much for my opinion. they are pushing like mad. lots of people think, it's funny to climp up on somebody and being carried towards the stage on top of the crowd. stagediving might be a fun thing to do, but only for the person who's being carried. especially when you don't see them coming. during Canned Heat somebody gives me a hard kick on the head. For a moment i think, i will pass out. (thank you, jerk, i hope you broke a leg!!) I have to get out of there, so i go to the side of the stage from where i can see the stage and one of the two big screens. much better here, although we - cosmicmouse came with me - are at least 30 meters away from the stage at this point. Canned Heat goes over into Titan (always funktastic). Then Corner Of The Earth comes on, great performance! Again they play kind of an extended version of the song. After that the first tunes of High Times comes one, everybody is screaming and jumping. Alright is the next song, again great performance. they do know how to rock!! the last song is Deeper Underground, my all-time-favorite. Rob's guitar-solo is just unbelievable funktastic! I could listen to this for hours (i hope, i will catch it on tape or cd, so i will be able to! )
10.30 pm
okay, where is the car? mouse and i seem to have different point of views of where we have to go (okay, mouse, you were right!!! ). and it's not easy to find your way when you are in the middle of the woods with no lights at all. every way looks the same to me.
11.00 pm
finally, we found the car! now we have to go aditional 370 km to Nürnberg where we will spend the night at cosmicmouse's parents-in-law's house.
11.30 pm
590 km
i have to get gas. i really do! the car is almost empty. normally i can go between 630 and 650 km with a full tank, but when going on the autobahn, it's just natural that it uses a bit more gas.
11.45 pm
610 km
okay, that is getting uncomfortable. when on the autobahn in germany, you normally have a gasstation every couple of kilometers. not in this area it seems. i keep telling mouse that everything will be fine, even though i am not sure at this point myself.
12.00 am
625 km
WHERE IS THAT BLOODY GAS-STATION??? I WANT IT! I NEED IT!
12.15 am
630 km
finally! a sign. it seems we will not have a unwanted stop in the middle of nowhere.
12.17 am
634 km
i have never been so happy to see a gas-station in my life. my tank fits exactly 45 liters of gas and i get 44.7 liters here. 10 more minutes and we would have run out of gas. Pew!
3.30 am
1050 km
finally arrived! i am sooo looking forward to go to bed! i think, i was asleep before my head hit the pillow.

The Festival Tour - Part Two
10.00 am
can i stay in this shower for the rest of the day? it's so nice and cozy in here!
11.30 am
"i'll be right back. i just want to get something out of my car" i go downstairs and get down to put my shoes on. in this moment it happens. i pull a muscle in my back. it feels like somebody has stabed me with a knife in the back. within minutes i am not able to move anymore. damn it! what to do? i decide to lay down for a while, hoping that the muscle in my back will relax eventually. i end up laying on the ground with my feet on the bed, thinking "okay, that's it. i will never be able to go to the concert. how in heavens name will i be able to stand for a couple of hours with a back like this?" i tell cosmicmouse to contact bine to arrange a meetingpoint with her, so at least she can go. there is no sence of waisting two tickets.
1.00 pm
my back is still not better. mouse's father-in-law calls the local ambulance and asks what to do. they tell him to take me to the emergency room in the next city. nice idea, if somebody can tell me how to get up from the floor.
i get up eventually (takes me about 5 minutes) and mouse's husband (funkmaster) takes my in my car to the emergency room. after i tell the doctor what has happend to me, it seems he wants to try to make it worth. i have to lay down and he basicly twists me around like a wet towel. but surprisingly it helps. after an injection i can finally feel that my back starts to relax slowly. but will i be able to the concert? i ask the doctor and he tells me it's up to me, but he gives me some pills for the pain. i decide to give it a try. after all, i still can go back to the car if i can't stand anymore.
3.00 pm
we arrive at the frankenstadium in nürnberg. first big surprise. the area is not as trashed as the nürburgring and parking is organized.
4.00 pm
finally inside the stadium. the area is much smaller then the area at the nürburgring. we go to the left side of the stage, a really good decision as we will find out in a little bit.
cosmicmouse and i are supposed to meet sunrayvibe after the concert. we only know, that she is sitting at the left side of the arena. as we walk towards the stage, we talk about if we would see her in her seat. we have never met before, so we don't know how she looks like. funnily enough this very minute somebody starts to wave at us. it's the lovely sunrayvibe! what a coincidence. we make a few bubbles for her and walk closer to the stage.
it shows, that the vip- and backstage-entrance is to the left of the stage. as we stand there, trying to figure out how to get closer to the stage, we see simon standing outside of vip-entrance. we wave at him, but he gives us a "oh, not you again"-look and walks inside again. that's rather strange, because we have never met him before.
a while later, nick comes out of the entrance too and comes over to us. we talk for a couple of minutes, before he decides to go back inside again. a few minutes later, jay himself comes outside, guarded by a huge bodyguard. we greet him, he smiles at us and walks into the backstage arena.
again a bit later, rob comes out of the vip-area and is heading towards the backstage-area. as he sees us, he turns around and comes to us. we chat for a while. he tells us, that he saw us the day before in the crowd. :2hop:
the area in front of the stage is split in two areas. the first one is about 10 meter long and it seems that you can only get into this area if you have a vip-pass. we try to get in there, but the security guard keeps sending us away. we decide to hang around, hoping to find a way to get in there. at least, the security guard keeps us entertaint while we are waiting. he has a mirror in his pocket and keeps checking how he looks like (not good at all, by the way! )
it seems there is no way to get into this area this way.
right before the concert is about to start, we realize, that there is actually a way to get into this area. after all the lucky vip-pass-owners have walked into the area, they open a small gate and let in some more people. we manage to get in there! YEAH!
the nice thing about it, is that we can get really close to the stage and have the comfort of not being stuck in a crowd where you can barly move.
the concert starts the same way like yesterday. the Intro, 20-0-1, Cosmic Girl, Main Vein, Love Foolosophy (a superlong extended version), Canned Heat and Titan. After that, the band starts to play the first tunes of Corner Of The Earth, but Jay stops them by starting to talk to the crowd. "I had a few (break) High Times" So High Times kicks in, followed by Travelling Without Moving. They play it for about 15 minutes! Again it ends with Deeper Underground.
Jay seems to be in a much more talkactive mood today then yesterday. He keeps jocking around with the crowd. "Festivals are not what they used to be these days. No more free love, sex in the car or foot-long joints". Might be the fact, that it didn't rain this day, might be the fact, that a few girls have taken off their shirts and show him their braws "Oh, look at this beautiful pair of german breasts. Yeah, let them wooble for me" He even lets one of the camera-guys point his camera at her, so everybody can see her breasts on the two huge screens.
9.00 pm
after the concert we met up with sunrayvibe and her husband and have dinner together. it's always so nice to meet other fans in real life! hope to see you again soon! ;)
11.30 pm
on the autobahn again, on our way home. i can't wait to sleep in my own bed!
3.30 am
1503 km
home. shower. bed. good night.
Congratulations if you have read this far! I guess, i left out a couple of things, but i am sure, CosmicMouse will also give us her point of view.
Cosmic Greetings

Wow, Bear. You did a great job with your reviews. I couldn't have done it better.
But let me add some impressions from a mouse's point of view...
ROCK AM RING, 18 May 2002
I still had my memories of the Ealing gig in my mind, when I entered the Nuerburgring and was quiet overwhelmed when I saw this big crowd of people in front of the stage. Yes, it is a complete different way of passing a concert. At Ealing I was one of 300, at the festival there were another 50 000 (?) people behind me!
Even though we made it up to the second row, we weren't really close to the band. There was a big space between the stage and the barrier. In addition the stage was very high and so the bandmembers were quiet far away from us.
Yes, I know I am totaly pampered of the Homecoming gig where the fans in the last row had been nearer to the stage than we were at the festivals.
During the fist two songs I got upset about the 30 photographers which were doing their job on the first step of the stage. Therefore we couldn't see Jay performing during 20-0-1 and Cosmic Girl. At the end of CG Jay jumped in front of the photographers so that we could finally see him. It was funny to watch him posing for the press around him.
After we heared songs like Cosmic Girl and Love Foolosophy a girl behind me mentioned: "I hope now they will finally do some popular songs!" .... eh?
As CosmicBear already said, we had to leave our place in the front during Canned Heat because the crowd was way too agressive and wild. But we had a good time in front of the screens. There we were dancing extensivly to the rest of CH and Titan and we have had enough place to walz to Strauss which was very funny.
Just in time to Corner Of The Earth we could see a wonderfull sunset. Very romantic and the perfect setting for that brilliant version of COTE.
High Times (without brass ) and Deeper Underground have never been performed as powerfull and "rocky" as at that show. Rob was in top condition. I have never heard him playing that masterly! His solo rocked!!!!! Even one of his guitar's strings bursted.
My favourite songs were Love Foolosophy which was a perfect mixture of the accoustic and the standard version, and the best performance of Deeper Underground I have ever heard.
I definitely missed Space Cowboy and Little L. But Alright and High Times made it all good for me.
When we arrived at my parents-in-law's house the broadcasting on ARD just begun and we could see our soap bubbles on TV! How cool is that, huh?

Ok, let's talk about festival number two...
ROCK IM PARK, 19 May 2002
The day have had a bad start. Seeing Bear lying on the floor with his pain I never thought that we could see the second festival together. Oh no, not another concert without CosmicBear. But in the end everything was good and was glad that we could enjoy the concert together. :rolling:
One highlight was definitely to meet Jay, Nick and Rob. I never expected to meet them at this kind of event. But we had luck. :good:
When we talked to Nick he asked me if I was the one who has the bubbles on her website and who used to make soap bubbles at their concerts. Yeah, that's me! Isn't it a cool way to be remembered???
And even Rob saw us the day before in the crowd and recognized us. He said that he was very tired and that he has to wake up before they start to play. But when I saw him playing High Times he didn't seem to be tired at all. "And some tin foil with a glass pipe is your guitar..."
This time the crowd wasn't agressive at all and so it was a pleasure to stand in one of the front rows on the left side with a brilliant view to Matt, the new keboardist of Jamiroquai which was doing a great job – especially at Alright, Deeper Underground and TWM.
The setlist was shorter than the day before, some songs were longer, COTE and Alright was left, they did Travelling Without Moving instead. I missed Beverly Knight during Main Vein. Nothing compares to her powerful voice.
I took a lot of pics and we made loads of bubbles again. After the concert we met lovely Bine and later on sunrayvibe with her husband outside the Frankenstadion which was a very nice finale of this eventful weekend! :sun:
Although I prefer to see Jamiroquai concerts instead of Festivals, which are much more anonymous, we had a great time.
Jamiroquai rocks!!!

my final thoughts about this two-day-road-trip:
personaly, i enjoyed the second gig more than the first one, even though the music was better at the first gig. but it just shows, that not only the music makes an event special, but also the people, who are at the gig.
there is no doubt, that jamiroquai rocked my world both times, but being surrounded by people, who are agressiv can destroy the entire situation.
it was much more fun being surrounded by people, who enjoyed this funktastic music the way we did. with lots of fun, having a great time.
to everybody, who will go to one of the future festivals. i do wish you a great time with a great crowd! have canned heat in your heals that night!
Cosmic Greetings

no, white jamirotalk.net-shirt. white with black letters "CosmicBear" on the front, jamirotalk.net on the back.
i made bubbles as well. i was full of the soup-stuff, because i had to hold this little thing that you use to make the bubbles (don't even know the german name, not to talk about the english...) over myself, because otherwise the bubbles would have hit the people standing next to me. so lots of the soup-stuff landed on my t-shirt. if it would have started to rain, i would have probably been covered in soup-bubbles. _________________ Dear Auntie Em. yes, we met bine after the concert. we, well actually mouse, were in contact with her via mobilephone before the concert. she had already managed to get into the vip-area right in front of the stage. we kept sending her text-messages to look out for our bubbles, but whenever she looked for them, we just had stopped making them.
right after the concert ended, we walked into her. unfortunatly, we didn't have lots of time, because we were supposed to meet sunrayvibe at one of the exits of the frankenstadium. we asked her if she wants to join, but she wanted to stay and watch neal young perform (i think) _________________ Dear Auntie Em. The third version
So this is the story from another point of view.
My husband and I attended the 3 days of the Rock Im Park festival and that was our 1st (and I guess the last) festival we went to.
As you described it CosmicBear, the surrounding conditions do have an effect on how you appreciate a concert, and the view of drinking-drunken-pewing-loitering youth does not match my idea of Fun & Funk.
So let's move to the sunny sides of this event: the concert of JAMIROQUAI
D-Day Sunday 19th of May
In the morning
I wake up on Sunday 19.05. with a heavy head full of the heat and noise of the 3 past days. Curioulsy the delicious and refreshing track of Jami "Don't stop the feeling" is playing in my brain.
I have refrained listening to Jamiroquai for 3 days (never thought it would be possible ) with the explicit purpose of increasing my pleasure during their concert.
Early afternoon
Although I have sworn myself to be at the stadium early to get a good seat, we arrive later (this damned subway does not drive on sundays) for the start of Wycleff Jean.
My husband looks at me every two minute and informs me ironically about the state of the countdown: "1 hour and half to go..." and so on.
His teasing brings the expected effect. After the next group (Bush) has started I am in very excited state, like for a first date or for a job interview.
Around 5:30PM
The expection of the concert is doubled by the thrill of meeting CosmicMouse and CosmicBear "in flesh" for the first time . I cannot resist the pressure anymore and I grab the binoculars to take a look at the crowd in the middle field of the stadium. I have a small hope that Meike and Stephan might go the left side take a look instead of trying to the get to the front stage.
10 seconds after I took the lenses, I notice 2 VERY NICE shirts not so far from my sitting area. This is incredible, they are here! I jump out of my seat and wave to them with the whole lenght of my arms.
Luckily enough they notice the crazy girl who is so glad to see them before the concert starts.
After taking some pictures of them blowing bubbles, I understand from their signs that they will move on further to the front.
A little bit later, between 2 songs of Bush, I catch Mouse and Bear blowing their bubbles and waving polite hellos to someone I cannot see from my seat. Later they talk with someone at the barrier. Now, wait a minute, I know this face. Is not this the guitarist of Jami or am I dreaming?
Around 6:30PM
Bush's performance is almost over and I see CosmicBear coming back. After walking through the whole row of seats, disturbing some Bush listeners and shortly pleading my cause to the security girl, I can eventually exchange some words with Mouse and Bear over the metal frame which separates the sitting and the standing zone.
Mouse and Bear are quite excited about having seen JK who was standing all the time at the left range, thus outside my view. That's the reward for lazy fan with a ticket in the sitting area .
Shortly before it starts
So the countdown is diminishing rapidly and Mouse and Bear try their chance further to the front area. Bush's performance is over. I throw anxious sights at the clock left of the stage and of the huge live screen. Am I thrilled !
It is 10 to 7 now and a loud rattle in the rows over me draws my attention to the left again. I can see McKenzie going on the lawn towards the back stairs of the central stage. JK also comes wearing the same light reflecting mirror-like head-decoration as he was wearing during the AFO tour. JK hears the rattle and stops looking at the rows, evidently pleased of being noticed. He stops for 1 minute and then walk further with his body guard close to him.
On the lawn, JK trains one or two spins which make him revolve almost 360 degrees. He does not seem satisfied with his head decoration. Not tight enough or something. Someone helps him with it, then a lady comes and manages to fix it.
So, now JK seems ready. He is wearing black pants and shirt, with a silver shining sport jacket of Adidas.
Two minutes before the intro starts, I see Mouse and Bear sticking to a group of people. It seems that something is happening there. They indeed let people inside the special pass zone! Mouse and Bear, quite easy to spot into the crowd with their light colored JAMIROTALK shirt, do manage do go through before the security closes the gate again.
I am so excited for them.
The concert
Then the Intro starts and JK enters the stage with a swift run and a loonnnggggggg jump (God, don't break your neck!).
The first song they play is 2001 and it happens just what I have been fearing since the beginning of RiPark. The accoustic is not so good. You can hear the guitar, the bass, the drums. The voice, the back vocals, the keyboard and the fine percussions are not in advantage. This is not specific to Jami, I noticed that for the other groups too.
Anyway, CosmicGirl follows (2nd place as usual). The 2 girls behind me start singing. Good girls. When LF starts, more people stand up to dance in the rows.
LF goes into Canned Heat without a pause between the 2 songs. During the second instrumental part of CH, JK dances for a while like a little robot and then disappears from the stage.
Then comes the "broken Wiener Walz" ... which function I still have not understood.
After JK has thrown some bottles of water into the crowd, they play High times which is rocking good!.
JK announces "We are going to do a track called Travelling without Moving". While I am yelling my devotion like a poor possessed creature, most of the audience remains calm and does not check what JK is talking about. As you said, CosmicBear, sometimes you wonder what people are doing at such festivals.
So they play Travelling without Moving and I can tell you that my feet like it, my legs like it, my bootie too, and all the rest up off the waist just follows the rhythm! JK seems to enjoy it very much: he does not stop jumping and raises his hands. Akingbola's face appears from time to time on the huge live screen and his beautiful smile radiates all over us.
After 8 PM
Oh, no! I look at this inevitable clock and it is already 8 PM!
They start "Deeper Underground" and as this is the song I was expecting for the end, I concentrate on the music and on the rocking guitar which takes one off, expelling the horrific idea that this might be the last song of their performance.
Unfortunatley it was.
The prospect of meeting CosmicMouse and CosmicBear after the concert comforts me from this too short (1 hour and 15 minutes) pleasure.... |

About the concert at Rock am Ring
I watched the recording of Rockpalast on ARD once and I could not discover either Mouse or Bear. The filming of the crowd goes to fast, one cannot fix one's attention on so many faces !
I should watch it a second time, maybe I will have more luck.
I found JK's voice quite disappointing , or was I expecting too much?
The weather's conditons at Ring seems to have been really awful. No wonder your back got stiff, poor CosmicBear.
The stage was so wet! It was fun seeing JK sliding on the wet plastic floor.
I was impressed by the sight of the moisted heat evaporating from JK's body in the beams of the spotlights. He looked like a little baked hot cookie just taken out off the oven of Funky God.
Those photographers were such an annoyance! Why do they have to be so close?
I found the performance at Park much more relaxed than the one at Ring. Maybe the weather had an influence on this. At Park, JK moved much more than on Saturday.
Or it was maybe there was too much pressure on the 1st concert (Ring) of their festivals summer tour? |

So where are they?
Hi CosmicMouse and CosmicBear!
Have you discovered yourselves among the crowd on the recording of Rock am Ring? If yes, tell me in which track.
The bubbles are indeed a GREAT marketing idea for your site. They are original, easy to recognize, do not bother the ears or the sight, appeal to a strong positive image (fun, lightness, dream, childhood,...).
The mere sight of it at Rock im Park was enchanting!
