What is Jay's part in Jamiroquai music?
Hello everyone!
I'm quite new here and I don't know if the subject I'm putting has already been on this HUUUDGE forum or not. If it was.. well, foregive me.

Jamiroquai is being regarded as "one-man band". We know that Jay is a songwriter, singer, lyricswriter, producer, aranger, recording master, (his own stylist and public relations specialist Wink ) ...and many more. But is He EVERYTHING ? I mean... how, but reeally, the songs are made? We all know that He has "the brain", but NObody could do it all by himself.

And, most of all,he would have to have (oh my god,is my English correct? Embarassed ) enormous theoretical knowledge. Does he play any instrument? I've read about his mother, did she teach him music? Where does he know all this from? A lot of questions...

best regards

Well... I think Jay Kay can work in an album without a band... he can use his computers and he can make a good job.. and Live?? he pays 5 musicians to play for him... that's not very difficult... i really think Jamiroquai is just Jay Kay.... just go to google, and in the image search engine type: Jamiroquai, what are you going to see?? pictures of jay Kay.... you just say Jay Kay and it's equal Jamiroquai... so....

Does Jay Kay play an instrument?? well, after Jamiroquai he was a 70's and disco DJ!!!! and maybe he has fundaments for the keyboards...

I think that the bandmembers have more influence than we know....
Jamiroquai wouldn't be the same without them!!!

Yes Butterfly, that is true. In fact Jamiroquai wouldn't "be" if not them. You see, making a song is not only humming a melodical leading line, after that you have to add chords. Can he do that? If somebody else makes them up, the person is co-writer. So who, actually, is?

Jay without the band is nothing! Bealive me! at least is the opinion that i have !
I also tink on that about long time ago, if the band really wants to have that great song , got to have a distint "player" for all the positions!
Obivus a Drummer don't understand "nothing" of the keyboard...well what i say is that, everyobne got is own position , Jay sing give some ideias to the composition to the song for the other members..and all do the same!
Everyone makes is part in the band!
I don't see Jay "alone" make is own album!

You're absolutely right whoopie!!! and what i've said up there was my opinion.... and NO Françoise, i don't want a techno album.. i want an "Emergency on Planet Earth" album again, or just a Shoot the Moon album!!! with jazzy sounds and strings. But each bandmember makes the difference... just compare Stuart and Nick... too much difference between them, compare Sola and Kofi Kari kari, compare Rob Harris and Simon Katz, compare Toby Smith and Matt Johnson... The TWM and the Space Cowboy era were the best ones, because of their musicians, all of them has their unique style, and that's why those eras makes the differences from the other three... And Jay Kay has made great his job!!! Nice high times since 1992!!!

Bye...
Best regards..
Edgar Wink

remember:

no jason kay = no jamiroquai. simple. thos current musicians would be with other bands.

jay kay is the moneymaker of the band. he's the publicist.

i've said this before: if you ask anyone weather Jamiroquai is a band or a person/singer, a majority of people would say singer.

oh, and jay is the singer. i dont think he is really that hands on with the album; that's the job for the producers/sound engineers.

ideas?

Well, the only thing i know is that the musicians don't care if they're on the videos, promos or not.... they're musicians and they want to play!! that's all.... And Jay Kay has to do all the job!! Remember he's the main member of the band, so he has to pay the musicians, write songs (well rob helps jay on that), Jay has to make the videos, he's the publicist... so he hav a lot of nice job!! Ohhh and remember, he's the guy dancing and jumping on stage!!! the guy of the "Put your hands together" and "Party People"!!!!, but i think Jay's nothing without his band, but i think the band can make their own job, who knows?? maybe Sola can sing... if you check out his website, there's one video and he sings great, and all the bandmember are going to do the same with jay or without him... they're musicians, they know what to do... Jay's not their dad!!!

Hello Jamirotalkers AFO hat

Good question and good topic Whoopiee. I've been thinking about this a long time ago, and I knew I read it somewhere. So when you posted the topic I searched in my documents and ... well... let Jay explain it:

Quote:
"This is how I came up with the tune "Ba-da-ba-doo-um-booo-dooo! Once I've finished that, then the strings--zeeeew-znn-znn-zeeeen! I'll sit next to the string guy and sing that."
"I can hear the whole song in my head, exactly where I want each little bit, little pieces. That's how I've always written music--it all comes from me humming, humming what I want to hear."
"Most people would probably feel stupid doing that, but I'm so used to making music like that, it's easy."

On another one, he adds:

Quote:
"Basically, I have the melody and the sounds of the instruments in my head ( guitar, bass, metals, chords ) and Rob has the job of creating the sounds and play them the right way."

So there you go Whoopiee, hope that answered that question, I know it answered mines! Wink
