Favorite Record Shops
Hey all, hope you're having a good weekend. I went to a tiny little shop out here in Boston called CD Spins, which sits right next door to this bigger and $licker Virgin Records place. I came out with two old Jamiroquai singles, the Alright UK Part 1 and the Deeper Underground Japan release. So when I got home, I thought of this topic: Do you all prefer the big music stores or the little record shops where you all live and why?
I'm hoping my shop gets the first single real soon. _________________ "...I feel that Jamiroquai needs to be taken to another stage now. It really does. When it comes to new releases I compare prices and buy as well in small or in big shops.
But if you are looking for older Jamiroquai singles they are most times not more available in all stores here in Germany, only in second hand CD-stores when you are lucky.
That's why I am buying now most older Jamiroquai singles on ebay, and then I have also more possibilities to get a single release with interesting remixes or video on it. _________________

yer, small shops are better because they care fr more "niche" (smaller) genres, and carry less stock of more items.
for example, you can't buy EOPE or any old album of a large band from a department store.
smaller stores also carry 2nd-hand records of artists from looooooong ago.
and the staff know what music is good, not like bigger department stores, that just keep blaring shithouse r&b and jessica simpson. |

Here in Croatia its a completely different situation. We're a pretty small country, and a even smaller city. So you only have like two or three big names and thats is. Whats really weird is they get very little merchandise. You cant buy Verona DVD anywhere here, let alone any singles or something like that. |

Hello,
Good topic (Good to see a new worthy one in the "Offtopic" section for a change!), well, here in the States, the only real great record stores are, much like Pietro described, the small independant record stores chains. They really offer a better selection in new music and used music, the used CD market is humongous at my favorite record store. The best local independant record store chain I frequent is called "Plan 9 Music" (Named after the infamous Ed Wood Cult movie!), they always get imports about a few days after their UK or worldwide release and almost ALWAYS have something new to offer from the ever-growing music catalogue that I love, also sometimes have great extra CD promos for specific artists (Gotten alot of my early Jamiroquai Promo stuff there!). You can check out "Plan 9" at their website: http://www.plan9music.com . Also, some of the BIG electronic store chains here in the states, like Circuit City (www.circuitcity.com) & Best Buy (www.bestbuy.com), usually have good deals on 1st week new album releases, in rare occasions, depending on the artist. Well, there you go, that's the landscape of the American Record Store, keep those posts coming, very interested in hearing what record stores are like in your "Corner of the Earth" ! Thanks for listening and Peace!
Sincerely,
JamiroFan2000 _________________

first of all jamirofan2000 thats a AWESOME sig you got there did u make it yourself? or get sumone else to do it ???
in my corner of the earth i love to go to "music@byron" rather then the hmv's or what ever they call them selves these days mostly cause the owner of music@byron is a mad JMQ fan and always gets all there releases, singles, etc etc its awesome and im pretty lucky to have sumoen like that who is mad bout JMQ!
the shop always plays JMQ tracks blaring thru there speakers and because byronbay is known as the "funky village" it just sets off the perfect vibe and its next to a park where lots of people allways get down and dance in the middle of the day (biggest pot town JAY KAY would love it! ) _________________

In the U.S., especially for new mainstream releases, it's tough to avoid buying new albums from Best Buy or Target or Circuit City where frankly they are cheaper than the smaller record/cd shops. But smaller shops do have some cool rare recording/other merchandise, and usually more selection from indy groups. Also, it's good to browse these smaller stores to see what you can "stumble on". You can find some great rare stuff at these places.
There are two pretty good places for that in Minneapolis. 1) is the Electric Fetus, but it's nickname is just "the Fetus" http://www.efetus.com and the other place is called Knowname records http://www.knowname.com
They both have some interesting content on their websites BESIDES WHAT THEY ARE TRYING TO SELL YOU on their sites, so check 'em out if you're bored.
Good topic Supersonic. BTW, it also says there's a "No-name records" in Boston, but it's spelled different, so Im pretty sure they aren't related or owned by the same people. _________________ Wouldn't 'ya like... To walk the sunny avenues of life? |

Well... it depends! I use wherever has in stock what I want & is offering it at the best price! For me one of the biggest selling points however of the smaller places that aren't part of a multi-store corporation is the people who work in them. They normally seem to have more zeal & passion for music. I find it very annoying to go into a place to buy a cd, get them to do a stock check but have to tell them how to spell artists names I like to feel people know what they are doing & know their subject! After all, passion is contagious... |

Have you tried Boston Beat...if I remember correctly it's further down on Newbury Street on the opposite side of CD Spins in Boston. It's mainly a DJ music place but you can find hard to find and the very latest from Europe there. I used to go there all the time when I Dj'd. They make runs to NYC 2-3 times a week to grab the latested stuff from all over the world.
So needless to say I small music shops. _________________ I used to worry about the future
