I have the very same Rhodes model as Toby... Rhodes Mark I Stage Piano SeventyThree. My favourite Rhodes model although I like the 88 key Suitacase model too. But it's so big and clumsy... not fun to carry.

There are many different Rhodes model. I'm a purist and I prefer the Rhodes before they became Fender Rhodes. It's Harold Rhodes' invention after all, not Leo Fender's.

Matt is playing the Mark II model... not quite the same lush sound if you ask me. But I wouldn't mind owning one of those as well.

Wurlitzers are fun too. But the sound of the Rhodes is magic indeed.

I'm still serarching for a decently priced Hohner Clavinet in good shape. Not that easy to find in Sweden though. Sad

Rhodes etc.
I have that model too, but I have to correct you there. The first Rhodes' were called Fender Rhodes (even thought Fender had nothing do do with it, they were business partners), but somewhere in the early/mid-70's, after the split from Fender, they decided to just call a Rhodes a Rhodes. The insides were the same, though.

And as for the mark 1 vs. mark 2 thing, the late mark 1's were like the mark 2's internally, but the mark 2's had the flat top (for stacking keyboards on). So Rhodes pianos from the late 70's and early 80's, both marks, would have been similar interally.

Mine is a Fender Rhodes from 1972 (after the Fender split). It appearantly took them some years to stop and think "Hey, what's this Fender logo doing here?".

I'm sure you'll be able to get a clav in Sweden, I got one in Norway (early E7, but labelled as D6). Toby used the duo, which is an E7 with the mechanics of the Hohner Pianet (slightly Rhodesy el. piano) added; if you have the If I Like It, I Do It acoustic version, you can hear him changing between clav and pianet. The same goes for a lot of those early bootlegs, where the clavinet all of a sudden gets a thicker, more piano-like sound.
There's a place in Norway fixing and selling vintage keys: www.vintagebua.no
They might be able to help you. Apart from that, there's www.musikkweb.no
Under the category "Kjøp og salg".
It might just cost you a lot of money, though. My clav cost 8000kr, it's in very good condition. My Rhodes I bought from an old jazz drummer who liked his alcohol enough to sell it for 4000kr. It looks very beat up, and needs some fixing and tuning, but it's an alright piano.

Thanks for all that information T_R_S. Very interesting. I don't know why I was under the impression that they first were Rhodes and later became Fender Rhodes... I should have known better. Wink

I especially want to thank you for the heads up on those places in Norway. I visit Norway more or less every year to visit family who decided to move there. Arranging a pick up of a Clavinet at the same time would be excellent. I'll have to look around and see if anything I like is available. 8000 NOK is no problem when it comes to such a nice instrument, that's about what I paid for my Rhodes many years ago. I wasn't fortunate enough to find a musician with enough love for the alcohol to sell it for 4000. Laughing

What kind of wah-wah are you using btw (I'm assuming you use one)? I have the Dunlop Cry Baby reissue from the late 80s/early 90s... I don't remember exactly when I bought it... no later than 1990 though. It's a really nice pedal.

hi guys

TRS you are right about DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MARK I & MARK II, this is what rhodes super site says:

As a new decade was approaching, and at the height of the piano's popularity, CBS decided to put a new face on the Rhodes product line. The Rhodes Suitcase Piano was updated with a sleek black design, a removable music rack, and a flat harp cover for supporting an additional keyboard. Aside from these cosmetic enhancements, the "new" Suitcase pianos of 1979 were identical to the previous "Mark I" version.

And after 10 years of being designated "Mark I", the Rhodes Mark II Stage Piano made its debut. Like the Suitcase models, it was a last-generation Mark I piano with the new all-black design.

Effects
I'm using a Dunlop wah too, because it's got the sound I'm looking for (I love the production/sound of 70's records, and I feel only very rarely people are able to produce something with that same old sound these days).
I also have a MXR Phase 45 phaser (appearantly the MXR 90 is the model they all used, so mine is older, but I like it).
Apart from that, I don't use a lot of effects. I am fascinated by the strange sounds Chick Corea got from his Rhodes when playing with Miles Davis around 1969; he used echoplex, ringmodulator, fuzz... Some raw sounds!
But the all-time favourite is the ping-pong Rhodes stereo tremolo. Having a stage piano, I lack that effect... Sad
But you could always add it later if you're recording with Pro Tools or Cubase.
Clavinet with wah is a usual combination for me, but I find a bit of gain goes a long way to funkify the sound!

Vintage keys are lovely little things, I wish I had plenty of money...
My wishlist:
- hammond w/leslie
- wurly
- mellotron
- ARP Omni
- Minimoog
- ARP Odyssey

But that's just a dream. Cool

...eh eh. I'm an (old) keyboard player too....I have NOT plenty of money, I must do my best with the less...
I've only an Alesis QS6.1....In the past, I've played (or have put my hands on) Wurlitzer piano, Prophet 5, Korg MonoPoly, Siel Orchestra, Roland D50, D70, Yamaha SY85, Emax, Elka organ (an Hammond clone), etc etc, Yahama CP80 (wow)....

my latest new entry? eh eh...surprise: Casio SA39. Terrific! It has some dirty, cheap, analog sounds....incredible. I'm very happy about it.

Good old funky keyboards...
Just to keep this little keyboard debate going, I have some news about my own collection. Probably a bit off-topic, but what the hell.

I just bought a new (old) synth on Ebay. It's called ARP Explorer, and is a monophonic (one note at the time) synth. I already have a monophonic Moog, but as knowers of these instruments will no doubt be aware of, no two analogue monophonic synths will sound the same.

Here's some info:

congratulations, mate!!
this synth is a treasure, and also it is very rare. i have seen it only 2 times on ebay for last 6 months. it is similar to ARP pro soloist and ARP pro dgx models but with more developed synthesizer section.
i have heard the way pro dgx sounds - it has my favourite sounds in
synth brass / woodwinds direction. And pro soloist which is pro dgx's predecessor, somehow has a bit richer sound than pro dgx and it was used by Herbie Hancock on "Man Child".
i also want to buy explorer..

T_R_S, please when the synth arrives to you, make a post about it ok!!!

Don't worry about that, I'll post the very same day!

It should arrive within a couple of weeks, unless the customs people delay it. Which they often do....

I'm getting quite a collection of synths now, with the Moog MG-1 and the ARP Quartet already in my possesion. My plan is to use some of them the next time my band records anything in the studio, and maybe even live.

So then you'll be able to hear some vintage analogue synths used in a (hopefully) good way.
