Jamiroquai through the years! [Updated]
I was talking with Flor an hour ago about the old bandmembers of Jamiroquai, when she signed out, i saw some of these old concerts and then i had the idea to make a mini-guide of Jamiroquai musicians over these great years of Funk! I think it's gonna be interesting for new fans! Here I go:
Emergency on Planet Earth:
The debut album. Released in June 1993. Before that, Jay had auditioned for lead vocals in the band "Brand New Heavies" and he was unsuccessful... Then he set up his own band, with Nick Van Gelder, Wallis Buchanan, Stuart Zender and Toby Smith.
In the EOPE Tour gigs we can find musicians as:
Maurizio Ravalilo [Percussions]
Stuart Zender [Bass]
Toby Smith [Keyboards]
Gavin Dodds [Guitars]
Wallis Buchanan [Yidakki]
Jay Kay [Lead Vocals]
Darren Galea [DJ D-Zire]
Nick Van Gelder [Drums]
Jhon Thirkell, Gary Bernacle and Michael Smith played as trombone, trumpet and flute in the same order.
The Return of the Space Cowboy:
The second album. In this album, the band suffers their first change. Nick Van Gelder left the band (but he played 'The Kids' on the album), and very fast was Derrick making auditions for drummer. He was helped by a friend for the audition... he was selected six and a half hours after his second audition in January 1994. And finally, Gavin left the band as musician and Simon Katz takes his place (both recorded the album), the same happened for Maurizio Ravalilo and Sola Akingbola. Sola joined the band in 1995.
The musicians on tour were:
Toby Smith [Keyboards]
Stuart Zender [Bass]
Derrick McKenzie [Drums]
Darren Galea [DJ D-Zire]
Wallis Buchanan [Yidakki]
Maurizio Ravalilo and Sola Akingbola [Percussion]
Gavin Dodds and Simon Katz [Guitars] (Gavin started the tour with Jamiroquai and Simon finished)
Jay Kay [Lead Vocals]
Adrian Ravel, Mike Smith and Winston Rollins played Flutes, Saxo and Trombone in the same order.
Travelling Without Moving:
After the changes on the TROTSC tour, the band continued as usual in the TWM tour.
The musicians were:
Toby Smith [Keyboards]
Simon Katz [Guitars]
Stuart Zender [Bass]
Derrick McKenzie [Drums]
Wallis Buchanan [Yidakki]
Sola Akingbola [Percussion]
Darren Galea [DJ D-Zire]
Jay Kay [Vocals]
There were Martin Shaw, Adrian Ravel and Winston Rollins as trumpets, Flutes and Trombones in the same order.
Synkronized:
After problems with the band, Stuart Zender leaves the band, and then happen the story of Nick. He answered and ad in a magazine for a Jamiroquai tribute, then he knew that Stu had left the band, make some contacts, and there he was as the new bandmember in 1999, having jamiroquai to record the album again with their new bassist. All the others bandmembers kept their positions!
Toby Smith [Keyboards]
Nick Fyffe [Bass]
Simon Katz [Guitars]
Derrick McKenzie [Drums]
Sola Akingbola [Percussion]
Wallis Buchanan [Yidakki]
Darren Galea [DJ D-Zire]
Jay Kay [Vocals]
After this tour, nobody else saw trumpets, saxos, DJ, Yidakki and Flutes again in Jamiroquai...
wait for the update with the last tour and the new album news...
(i'm tired of writing, i hav 3 hours doing this post) hehehe
Jamiroquai through the years! [Part 2]
A Funk Odyssey:
A lot of changes happened with this new album. For Jay Kay and his new Pokemon idea of "Evolving", he drop the best part of the band, just to try a new sound... he dropped the brass section, DJ D-Zire, and Yidakki. But he added background vocals to the band, and a second keyboardist. Toby Smith left the band and Simon Katz, and the newbies were Rob Harris and Matt Johnson. Toby started touring with them and Matt finished, Rob recorded the album with Jamiroquai. In this tour "Beverley Knight" collaborated with them for background vocals in Love Foolosophy and Main Vein.
Toby Smith and Matt Johnson [Keyboards]
Rob Harris [Guitars]
Sola Akingbola [Percussion]
Derrick McKenzie [Drums]
Nick Fyffe [Bass]
Jay Kay [Vocals]
Valerie Etienne, Hazel Fernandez and Lorraine McIntosh were the backing vocals during Tour.
Dynamite:
The only difference is the leaving of Nick. The line-up is the same one as the AFO tour and the Midnight Sun Tour!. The new bassist hasn't been yet confirmed... but as for the Official site, we know that Richard Murphy played with them in their last two presentations...
The line up for this Tour is:
Matt Johnson [Keyboards]
Derrick McKenzie [Drums]
Sola Akingbola [Percussion]
Rob Harris [Guitars]
Mr. Unknown Bassist [Bass]
Jay Kay [Vocals]
That was all! I really hope you liked it!!!
Bye Fellows!! see you!

This is the answer:
| Quote: |
Having travelled through a Funk Odyssey for over ten years and sold over sixteen million albums worldwide, we were more than excited to announce Jamiroquai as the first band to appear in our series of Carling Homecoming gigs.
Jamiroquai's gig took them back to Ealing, West London, where Jay first came up with the philosophy, concept and look of the band. Looking forward to the gig Jay Kay told us, "The Carling Homecoming gig is going to bring back a lot of old memories for me and playing in a small venue like the Broadway Boulevard will be a trip. It also gives us a chance to play some of the older tunes that really put Jamiroquai on the map that I've not played for ages."
And the 300 lucky fans who managed to get their hands on tickets weren't disappointed. Jay Kay put on an amazing performance blasting out a greatest hits set as well as keeping the audience entertained throughout the gig with his witty chat. As someone in the crowd leaving the tiny venue said to Carlinglive.com, "that was the most amazing, intimate, orgasmic gig I've ever been to!" |
He said that the gig was going to bring back a lot of old memories for Jay Kay! and a brass section is an old memory in Jamiroquai.... i think that's the answer. They used a brass section in Bad Girls with Anastacia in the BritAwards 2002 too.... _________________ This is FunkEducation, supporting the 1992-1998 Jamiroquai!!

Thank you very much about that information FE!
It's so sad that the brass section is no longer a part of the band. |
