Kentucky Derby
My other big obsession besides good music, concerts, etc, is horse racing. Both for watching it as a fan, and the betting aspect of it. Well tommorow (Sat 5/7) is the most popular horse race maybe in the world, but definately in the U.S.

Horse racing is sort of popular, but does not have huge popularity in the U.S. Kentucky Derby day is the one day where almost everyone has an interest in horse racing. Everyone goes to the various horse tracks, OTB's (Off-track betting establishments), and casinos nearest to them to place bets on the Kentucky Derby. Then they either stay at those places or go home to watch the race on national tv. The race is run at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Over 100,000 people pack the track every year to wtach the race. Women dress nice and wear really nice, creative hats. Men usually dress up also, bring a lot of betting money (to bet on the other races too), and sip on Mint Julips.

The race has a 2 million dollar purse, where the best 3 year olds are assembled to run against each other for the money, glory, and "roses" (the race is called "the run for the roses", because a bed of roses are draped over the winner). Well, as usual, there's a lot of anticipation for the derby this year, also due in part to the movie Seabiscuit, and Smarty mania (Smarty Jones' derby win and Triple Crown run last year).

Here are my picks. The betting favorite will be a horse named Bellamy Road. He's a front-runner who's smashed inferior competition so far. But I will try to beat him. I will bet $100 on the race.

I will $10 to win and place on Wilko and Sun King. Betting "to win" means the horse has to win the race to win the bet. "To place" means the horse can win the race or finish second to win the bet. Since you have a better probability of winning this bet over a "win" bet, they payoffs are less.

The other bets I will make will include Wilko and Sun King, but will also include one of the likely favorites, Bandini. I will bet a $5 exacta box and trifecta box with these 3 horses. "Exacta" means predicting the first and second places finishers of a race. So 2 out of these 3 horses have to finish both first and second. "Trifecta" means you're predicting the top 3 finishers in a race. So all 3 horses have to finish 1-2-3 to win the bet. "Box" means the horses can come in an any order as long as they come in top 2 in an exacta or top 3 in a trifecta.

Wilko is gritty determined horse who's won big races in the past. Sun King is a lightly-raced improving horse, and his daddy was former Kentucky Derby winner Charismatic. Both horses should be somewhere around 15 or 20-1, which will mean a nice pay day if they finish first or second. Im using these two with a horse named Bandini in exacta and trifecta box bets. The chances of hitting exactas and trifectas are slim, but if you win the bet, you get paid big money depending on the odds of the horses (this counts as big money). Bandini's odds will be close to the favorite, but I think he has a better chance to win. He hasn't raced much, but has looked pretty impressive, and his daddy was 2000 Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus. Bandini might have the most raw talent in the field, so if he can harness it, he could win pretty easy.

Betting $10 to win and place on the two horses will cost $40 total. The exacta and trifecta bets will cost $60 total. Add those together, and there's my $100 Kentucky Derby bet. I never bet nearly this much money on any other race, except for this one (trust me Im not rich by any means).

Im curious, especially to those in Europe, Australia, etc, if you've ever heard of the Kentucky Derby? If so, is it considered to be very popular? I know in Europe they have the Epsom Derby, all those big races with the word "Guineas" in the name lol, but does American racing have much popularity over there?

I've bet on Australian horse racing before, although it's confusing, because they use different stats foir their betting guides. I know the U.S. (especially California) gets a lot of horses from Argentina, Chile, Mexico, etc to run in the races there. But how is the Kentucky Derby viewed from a worldwide perspective? Just interested in your guys' perspectives here (especially if done politely, you know who you are)... peace y'all!

I'll be watching...the Kentucky Derby is one of the coolest events in sports, and it kicks off a great month for sports--the NBA playoffs kick into full swing (Go Celtics), and the Indy 500 is coming too.

Good luck Jaminneapolis...sounds like both your horses have experience and breeding on their side.

yes and no. i've heard of it, but couldn't eve care about horse racing, sorry to say. just not my thing. i hear about the Kentucky Derby more in movies than i do in sports reports.

here in australia, we do have the Melboune Cup, which quite literally stops the nation. once-a-year punters come out of the woodwork and bet hard on this one.

last year i bet $100 on Makybe Diva to win (she won the year before), i made $290 off that one, if i remember correctly.

Same as the other non-Americans here: heard of it & know its a pretty big thing but thats about it! As far as I'm aware there's no mention of it over here in the UK (feel feel to correct me if I'm wrong: I could be, as I'm not into horse-racing!) The only bigger races I know of are The Grand National here (which was a few weeks ago) which again a lot of people bet on, & also the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe in Paris which is in around October I think... Rolling Eyes

I should shut up on a subject I have very little knowledge of!!! LOL

Giacomo: 2nd longest shot to win in the history of the derby. He was 50-1. The 2nd place finisher was 70-1!!! It made for a $100,000 trifecta and $1 million superfecta... Pretty crazy race but I lost a lot on it. The good thing was, the race before the Kentucky Derby I hit a bet for $120, so I pretty much broke even.
