Alternate Version of Return of Space Cowboy Album?
I was reading about the single release of the Kids and I found this quote on wikipedia:

wikipedia wrote:
It is commonly known amongst fan circles that "The Kids" was written and performed during the 1993 Emergency on Planet Earth tour. It may either have been an outtake from the album, or simply a song written after the album was fully produced and released. The live version of the track played during the tour had a different chorus when compared to the official album version. After "The Kids" was recorded with previous drummer, Nick Van Gelder, Derrick McKenzie replaced Nick, and all tracks from the Space Cowboy recording sessions were re-recorded with McKenzie on drums, aside from "The Kids", on which van Gelder's drumming remains. The song was probably left to be because of time constraints related to the mastering process, production and release.

Is that bolded part true? Was ROTSC already recorded with Nick Van Gelder on drums & then re-recorded with Derrick?

well I don't know, but the notes I read about McKenzie replacing Van Gelder sound like it was done before recording sessions of ROTSC. So it could be that if VG is in the recording of "The Kids", perhaps it was done during the recording sessions of EOPE.

To me, "The Kids" sounds similar to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Which is who I was listening to when Jamiroquai came out!
Very Happy

As far as I remeber, the Video "Live @ The Ugo Ugo Ruga Show in" Japanese tv, shows a performance of the band in the studio during the recording sessions for the album TROTSC. You can see Derrick mcKenzie in it.

Altough The Kids was a previous song, the band performed this the during EOPE tour, maybe the final song included was a previous recording, I don't know.

Hi there,

The Kids was indeed recorded during the EOPE era (as weird as it seems, the "Kids" single was released in Japan as an EOPE single).

The single was released in Japan in March 94 while the ROTSC album only got released in October 94 (Sony Japan even listed another single release of Kids for December 1993, but I've never heard anyone having that version, so maybe Sony dropped it before releasing the single?).

I just listened to the Japanese single version, and drumming (and most instruments) sound like it's the same recording as the album. Jay's vocals have been modified (on the choruses), a couple of instruments have been added/deleted here and there (mainly strings), but the basis sounds the same to me on the single and the album.

Guess that, when recording ROTSC, they already had a final and engineered version of the track. They just reworked it a bit, but it's the Van Gelder track IMO.

Yeah that's what it sounded like to me. It's a very interesting alternate take to the album version. I have to wonder if the band was dissatisfied with the album version of kids since they didn't seem to have enough time like you mentioned.

@mojogonlopoto
That giant lemon in the video is hilarious.

@HoneyBee
Seems like there's a big overlap in fans between jami & the chili peppers.
