[Question No.5] - Paul Turner answers...
Dear Paul,

we've been reading things here and there from bandmembers that hints around writing and recording new Jamiroquai material. If it were up to you, which direction would you like the music to go and what will be different this time, considering the band is no longer bonded to Sony BMG?

(Question from CosmicMouse)

Hi everyone, I seem to say this to everyone I email lately but SORRY FOR THE SLOW REPLY! Wink
I'm currently in the US and my punctuality fell out of the tour bus on Route 66!

Firstly, can I say how much I'm looking forward to working towards the next album.........
It's early stages and my only experience of the writing and recording process with Jay and the guys was when we were in the studio throwing ideas around for the Greatest Hits. As you know "Runaway" and "Radio" came from that time and there were some other cool ideas that were recorded too. I thought at the time the stuff had the feel and essence of early album Jamiroquai and some smatterings (is that a word?) Wink of rock, hip hop, jazz funk to anthemic dance, as we played around with styles.

Although that was a year ago I think Jay still sees the next album as being a time to explore new twists but recapture some spontaneous playing and ideas.
There won't be the same pressures to adhere to a formula specifically to keep Sony happy, but to be fair Jamiroquai have always been more progressive than most, even when with Sony.
It's going to be played live and the energy captured and I'm sure there'll be a mixture of vibes that will keep old fans and new DJs happy.

Thanks for being patient and I'm sure I speak for the band when I say we can't wait to see you next year (with some new tunes).

Lots of love

Paul

That sounds like an interesting mixture. Very curious now! clapping

What exactly is anthemic dance, by the way...? Can anyone explain this to me..??? Rolling Eyes

Thanks again for your reply, Paul! Enjoy your tour in the US... but come back soooooon!! We miss you guys! Wink

I just googled and found the answer to my question.

wikipedia wrote:
A dance anthem, floor filler (also floorfiller) or club anthem is a dance (or disco) track which receives almost timeless status, being played commonly many years after its release. Many older (pre-1990) tracks which are referred to as dance anthems are often only played at retro nights in clubs, or at themed parties. A common sub-category of dance anthems have sometimes been referred to as "handbag songs", examples of such tracks include "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer, or "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor.
However, most commonly a dance anthem is a track which DJ's still play in normal sets alongside modern tracks. Some are played only towards the end of a set, almost as if a mini retro set was being played, but some are still used as if they were recently released dance music.
The term floor filler was coined to describe extraordinarily popular songs, due to the ability of certain tracks to bring people from the bar areas of nightclubs onto the dance floor. This is often due to the highly distinctive intros that some songs have but can also be due to the simple popularity and recognition of a song. DJs frequently reserve these tracks for critical times during their performances, to bring people to or keep people on the dance floor, thus ensuring a lively atmosphere.

yes is true this is the best answer untill now...but I guess we'll have a lot more to see!

finally same real hints, that anthemic dance reminds me of Abba (why?? Rolling Eyes ) and that sound supergood! thanks Meike for explaining, I was thinkin of some native american dance at first Embarassed

but to be honest he did not expose himself saying what direction HE not JMQ but Paul Turner would like the next album to get, but I'm sure for this time we can forgive him Wink Laughing Laughing

whatever if he reads or not I feel like wishing him all the best for the tour with Annie Lennox..she's another great artist and I can only be proud that OUR bass player is touring with her ( again Smile ) and yey have also fun!!

Thanks

Vere
