W Italia!
Secondo me (Vedete? Non so come si dice "anyway", "de toute manière" in Italiano), sarebbe meglio di parlare Inglese qua, così gli altri capiscono questo che diciamo.
So, I thought it would be an idea to copy the Aussies by opening an Italy thread. A thread about Luxembourg wouldn't be very popular anyway. But a thread about the greatest country in southern Europe surely will.
And there is Fra of course, she made me realise again how much I like Italy. Do you remember those pictures you posted in the Aussie pride thread?
Here some facts why I like Italy:
- I'm partly Italian. My father's mother was Italian and I still got an aunt living in Puglia.
- Italian food is the best, especially when you eat it in Italy.
- Italian coffee is the best.
- Italian wine is after my experiences the best, even better than the French one.
- The weather is fine in Italy.
- I love the shape of olive trees, and in Puglia there are millions of them.
- Italian beaches are nice, although the Adria has a certain lack of big waves. (For instance I've never been to the western coast)
- As you may know, Luxembourg has the shape of a shoe. Italy's shape on the other hand is a big high heeled woman's boot kicking a stone. (Well, to give Sardegna a meaning here is kinda hard . ). This might be the reason why most Italians are so mad about football.
- Summer nights in Italy are hot. The young dancing and chatting listening to loud music and the old taking out their chairs on the sidewalks to play Briscola or Scopa.
- Italian cars are the most beautiful.
- I like "The Four Seasons" by Vivaldi
- I like "L'ombellico del mondo" by Jovanotti
- I like "Azzuro" by Adriano Celentano
- Italian TV is bad, too often too many commercials on the private stations. But at least you can see there tons of beautiful women in very short dresses, even on the state owned stations. A funny fact is that the weather fore-casts are mostly presented by some military officers in full uniform.
Anyway, when you're in Italy, you don't want to stay inside for long.
- My favourite comedian is Italian: Roberto Benigni
- Maybe the best actor in the world has Italian origins: Robert de Niro
- My favourite film trilogy is about Italians: "The Godfather".
- The best-looking world-known actress nowadays is Italian: Monica Bellucci. And on top of all that, she has such a sexy accent when she's speaking French.
- Anyway most Italian women are nice and look nice.
Now, that should be enough for this time. |

U did it!!!!!!!
And i couldn't ask a better presentation!
Well, i'm proud to be italian: i 'd never change my country for another, and i'm very lucky to live in the south, so near to the sea.....
This topic could represent a real opportunity to let u know Italy (if u want, i'd be very happy) , its people, its most characteristic places, it's old traditions, its history, its music....everything!
Let's begin with some general information:
Italy has played an important part in Europe since the early Roman empire.
Population: 58 million
Geographic size: 116,000 square miles
Capital: Rome
Major cities : Rome, Milan, Naples, Genoa, Venice
Italy is a peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea. Its most prominent feature is its boot-like shape kicking the island of Sicily.
Much of Italy is covered by mountains. The Dolomite mountains which extend across northern Italy are part of the Alps mountain range. The Apennine mountains cut down the center of Italy, stretching from north to south, dividing the east and west coasts.
The Po Valley, just south of the Dolomite mountains, is the basin of the Po River. It is fertile farm land.
Italy includes two large islands: Sicily and Sardinia. Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean, with active volcanoes and earthquakes. Sardinia is basically mountains rising out of the ocean.
Italy also has two independent countries within its borders. Vatican City is the center for the Roman Catholic Church, and is the world's smallest country. San Marino, on the north east coast of Italy, is an independent republic.

It's quite simple though. I explained why I like Italy and Fra made a geographical description of her home country.
Well.
Have you ever been to Italy?
Do you know any Italians?
Do you like spaghetti and/or pizza?
If you can answer at least one of these three questions with yes, there might be no problem to take part in this conversation.
Between, I once saw a film about a black South African girl with an uncurable leg injury who tried to participate at a swimming competition over 30 kilometers, going from the isle of Capri to Naples. |

ITALY
The Best Travel Writing From
The New York Times
“A journey to Italy should always be seen as a journey of discovery that will reveal not one, but many Italies.”
--Umberto Eco
Italy has a long recorded history that the biggest problem facing the traveler is to choose among the nation's endless cultural attractions. All main centres, most of the provincial cities and many quite small towns have museums.
Of all the countries in the worls, there is none more magical than Italy, a traveler's dream destination. Ancien monuments and archeological sites are perfectly preserved; the museums are bursting with the genious of Italy's finest sons: Raffaello, Michelangelo, Tiziano, Canova; contemporary architects are still inspired by ancient buildings and squares (piazze). Italian cities are veritable living museums.
UNESCO World Heritage Sites - Italy
According to UNESCO, the United Nations' cultural branch, two thirds of the world's historical artistic heritage are in Italy. Tuscany, which is only one region of Italy, by itself possesses more artistic treasures than the whole of Spain, which is the second country in the world for cultural heritage. Practically all major styles of Western architecture can be found in Italy.
The following Italian sites (but there r more) have been placed by UNESCO on its World Heritage List:
Piazza del Duomo - Pisa (Tuscany)
I Sassi di Matera (Basilicata)
The Trulli of Alberobello - Bari (Apulia)
The Early Christian Monuments and Mosaics of Ravenna (Emilia-Romagna)
The Historic Centre of the City of Pienza (Siena, Tuscany)
The 18th-Century Royal Palace at Caserta with the Park, the Aqueduct of Vanvitelli, and the San Leucio Complex (Campania)
The Residences of the Royal House of Savoia (Piedmont)
The Botanical Garden, Orto Botanico - Padua (Veneto)
The Amalfi Coast, Costiera Amalfitana - Salerno (Campania)
Isole Eolie (Aeolian Islands, Sicily)

I love Italian food, especially the variations with differend noodles and sauces, salats etc...
And I really dig all kinds of Italian coffees.
Hiking the Italian dolomites up and down in summer, sitting on top of the mountains is one of my greatest pleasures as well as doing nordic skiing there. So, I stayed quite often in the north of Italy.
As I never make any beach holidays I can tell nothing about the middle and south.., _________________

Now Fra, Italy is sure a place with a bunch of interesting sights. I couldn't see Venice in your list though. I've been there already 3 times and it's a very beautiful city. It's just a pitty this town has become so touristic, even if I was a tourist myself. There are way too many people (and pigeons, ) at places like the Piazza San Marco or the Rialto bridge.

I can imagine that. And no linguistic difficulties for you. |
